Ukraine's transition to EU trade will cost €165bn - Putin

Switching over to EU trade standards and nixing duty-free trade with Russia will cost Ukraine €165 billion over the next 10 years, President Putin warned at a meeting with President Petro Poroshenko in Minsk on Tuesday.

Russia will be forced to cancel all preferential trade agreements for Ukraine's imports and switch to a standard regime when it ratifies its EU trade association agreement in September, the President said.

"In full accordance with the terms of agreement with the CIS free trade zone and WTO standards, we will be forced to cancel preferential imports from Ukraine," Putin said.

Russia will cancel its duty-free relationship with Ukraine, which will lead to import tariffs of up to 8 percent affecting 98 percent of commodities.

Russia insists it needs to protect domestic markets from the flood of European goods on the Ukrainian market, which will in turn make Ukrainian goods less competitive. If the trade corridor of Ukraine is left wide open, Russian, Belarusian, and Kazakh products are at risk.

In response, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that he would like to establish a monitoring group to assess the actual damage of Ukraine's association with the EU.

"Today we can agree to set up a monitoring group that will assess real and not hypothetical potential damage," said Poroshenko. "After this damage is calculated we can put in protection mechanisms."

Moscow has warned Kiev that signing the Association Agreement (AA) with the EU would be economic suicide, and Moscow is also poised to suffer a €2 billion blow, according to Putin.

"Entire sectors of industry and agriculture business will be hugely impacted, and there will be negative implications on the pace of economic growth and employment," the Russian President said.

Losses will not only be absorbed by Russia, but also by Customs Union members Belarus and Kazakhstan, he added.

The Minsk talks are the first meeting between Putin and Poroshenko since early June when the two informally met on the sidelines of the World War II commemoration ceremony in Normandy.

The AA sits at the heart of the Ukrainian conflict, as people first began protesting in Maidan Square in Kiev after the then–President Viktor Yanukovich decided against signing the deal.

However, in June the new Kiev government signed the economic part of the Association Agreement, about a month after Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan sealed their Eurasian Economic Union on May 29 in Minsk. President Poroshenko said the EU association document will be ratified in September.

Ukraine has strong economic ties with both the EU and Russia, which is why it wants to forge trade relations with both the European Union and the Russian-led Eurasian Union. It is Europe's second largest country by landmass, has a $176 billion economy, and a population of 45 million.

Russia has been building European security structures for at least 40 years. Now they have taken the gamble to violate them, when you look at Putin in his last public appearances, he has been incredibly nervous. Small take on the Seps offensive .


Whoever is commanding the seps right now is a military genius, since nobody was keeping attention to the maps or the most updated maps ill lay it out to you and i am pretty certain its a person with a lot of military experience, not from ukraine, most definitely some russian general.

1) So 1st they surrounded the forces under amrosievka which the UA forces didnt expect. Made a mad dash to mariupol.
2) Ua forces responded in panick by sending forces from marinovka and donetsh west group to help or relieve amrosievka group.
3) Delayed strike after 2 days(today) also surrounded the reinforcements that were going to amrosievka while they were passing in elenovka. Some forces from the sea dash group either peeled off(durring offensive) and returned and are helping them hold the line between Amrosievka-Alenovsk surround.
4) Forces that surrounded Alenovsk on the Donskoe road stayed behind but a chunk of them went forward to Surround Mariupol. While the sea forces managed to take Mariupol nearby towns and are also heading to support Donskoe group in the surround

So right now the Ua forces are looking at 3 cauldrons in the next 2-3 days with all of their lines of supply cut. Not to mention since this is happening forces under Lugansk started their operations (around the same time of the offensive) to either block or surround the small chunks on the north of the city. I doubt they managed to surround Metallist and Schastie but they sure as hell made the communication lines horrible, which puts the 2 groups that are under Lugansk in a no-supply territory with mobile units preventing them from moving anywhere outside of their current zones.

Also since marinovka has been severely weakened by the panick(the forces that went to save Amrosievka), rebels started pushing to Marinovka, the success of the push is unknown as of now. Not to mention that the general strain on the UA army on the west and north of donetsk makes it possible to either surround debaltsevo or to try to take karlovka and make the northern UA group bleed with no supplies.

If UA doesnt take any action, they are looking at a potential surround of 1-3rd if not 1-2 of their total force fighting in the ato.

There will be severe battles in Kuteinikovo, Starobesheno and probably Elenovka soon that will decide the outcome of this.

Now similar situation in Ukraine ,the president is pro west,so he is good and rebels are terrorist.

Again i am not getting into who is right or wrong ,just was pointing out to you hypocrisy of west.

The difference between Europe and middle east is that as far as I know there are no commonly developed security systems between countries. In Europe all the countries has signed OSCE agreements. I partly understand your doubts about "west", the more I read this forum, the more I appreciate that Finland has kept it´s integrity and avoided being occupied or colonized, our national identity is based on our own accomplishments, no need to seek nemesis or compensation elsewhere.
