STAFF WRITER 20:23 HRS IST

Mumbai, Jul 4 (PTI) Supporting its claim that Viveka Babajee and stock analyst Gautam Vora were in a relationship, the dead fashion model's family today released photographs and internet text messages exchanged between the duo and demanded Gautam to "come out with all truth about Viveka".

In a second statement issued by the family since Viveka's death, its representative Dale Bhagwagar released seven photographs which show the two together, besides Gmail chats and Facebook messages (social networking site) exchanged between them between May and June.

"The printout copies of Viveka's Gmail and Facebook accounts and the photographic evidence, which signify their relationship as a couple in love, have been handed over to the police," Bhagwagar said.

Cops grill NRI in dowry case
TNN, Jul 6, 2010, 12.28am IST

CHANDIGARH: A matrimonial dispute complaint filed by a city resident recently led UT police to grill a Singapore-based banker, Shyam Sunder Arora. He is accused of dowry harassment, stealing his alleged estranged wife's jewellery and remarrying without divorcing her.

Police said Arora was detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, in January following a communication by UT police against allowing the 40-year-old to travel abroad.

More recently, he was summoned to crime against women cell (CAW), Sector 17, on July 2. As the matter involves NRI affairs, SP (CAW) Rajinder Singh Ghuman is monitoring the complaint filed by Arora's 'estranged' wife Rohini Arora, who stays in Sector 33.

Rohini told TOI that 40-year-old Arora had not only remarried in Singapore without divorcing her, but also stolen Rs 50-lakh jewellery from their joint account at a Chennai branch of Standard Chartered Bank Singapore.

An FIR under sections 498A and 406 of IPC was registered against the 40-year-old and his father Inder Kumar Arora in April 2009.

Investigating officer ASI Sukhwant Singh confirmed that the NRI had been questioned.

''Shyam Sunder Arora has claimed that he had operated the locker in Chennai following directions of a Singapore court,'' the ASI added.

He said, ''Arora had been avoiding police since the FIR was registered. In order to move a proclaimed offender (PO) proceedings, he had approached the sessions court for bail. The PO proceedings have been dropped.''

Police said the accused had moved Supreme Court, pleading that the FIR against him be quashed. ''The apex court put a stay on his arrest,'' the ASI said.

Police sources said Rohini had alleged that Arora had operated the joint account without her permission and stole the ornaments.

CAW incharge inspector Gurdarshan Kaur Bhullar said, ''The banker's father has joined the investigations and is cooperating with the agency.''

Police look the other way as shooting accused honeymoons
TNN, Jul 6, 2010, 12.30am IST

MOHALI: A groom, who fired celebratory gunshots during a function related to his wedding on Friday in Derabassi has left for his honeymoon in spite of complaints being filed against him with the police.

Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar had said on Sunday that strict action would be initiated against the accused.

Derabassi DSP JS Khera had said that Jain was in his house in Adarsh Nagar Colony on Sunday and they had not decided on whether he should be held. However, officials of Derabassi police station had claimed that he was hiding in Chandigarh or Panchkula where they had conducted raids for his arrest.

On Monday, Derabassi SHO Ranjodh Singh said Jain and his wife had left for a hill station and they would have to wait for his return to arrest him. "Even his (Jain's) family members are not aware where he has gone," said the SHO.

On Friday night, during a pre-wedding party, an inebriated Jain had allegedly fired several shots in the air, which created panic in the area. On Saturday afternoon, some residents of the locality had approached cops about that and a case under Section 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of Indian Penal Code and sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of Arms Act was registered.

While cops made no efforts to make the arrest, Jain's wedding took place on Saturday at a marriage palace of Derabassi, where, someone again allegedly fired three or four shots. However, the SHO maintained that no shots were fired during the wedding.

"Jain's family members have assured that on his return, they will produce him in the police station. We are waiting for that," said the SHO.

RJD-LJP bandh shuts down Bihar
TNN, Jul 11, 2010, 03.42am IST

PATNA: For the third time within a week, life in Bihar came to a standstill on Saturday due to a bandh enforced this time by the RJD-LJP alliance in protest against price rise. Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from across the state with bandh supporters raining lathis on vehicle owners and shopkeepers who defied the bandh.

Reports reaching Patna said the bandh was almost total in all major towns. Most shops, business establishments and schools remained closed. But banks and other financial institutions did transactions.

Several trains were stranded. Long queues of trucks and other vehicles were seen on the highways with RJD-LJP workers blocking traffic at various points. In Patna, burning tyres were used to block roads.

RJD-LJP leaders leading processions reached Dak Bungalow roundabout in Patna. LJP supremo Ram Vilas Paswan arrived around 11.30am and described the bandh as "unprecedented". "People are more troubled by skyrocketing prices than bandhs," he said before courting arrest.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad arrived from Delhi around 1pm and marched towards Dak Bungalow crossing with supporters. He said the RJD-LJP alliance did not join the bandh on July 5 because the BJP and RSS were supporting it.

Jagan needs advice, can wait for CM's post: K Rosaiah
PTI, Jul 10, 2010, 10.05pm IST

HYDERABAD: Two days after Y S Jaganmohan Reddy's controversial yatra was launched, Andhra Pradesh chief minister K Rosaiah feels he needs advice, observing that the Congress MP can dream and aspire for the chief minister's post but there is a method to it.

"He is a young boy with a lot of future. He needs proper advice. He can dream, aspire and try for the CM's post but there is a method to try and get it.

It is not a post to be captured by doing something. Jaganmohan Reddy could have waited for sometime and staked his claim," Rosaiah, who is opposed to the yatra, told TV news channel.

Son of late Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajashekhara Reddy, a defiant Jaganmohan is continuing his controversial 'odarpu yatra' (condolence march) ignoring reservations voiced by the Congress leadership. The yatra commenced on Thursday in Srikakulam district in AP and got a good response.

However, softening from his earlier stance, Rosaiah said, "It is not such a serious matter which will be seen as defiance by the Congress."

On the family member of MLAs and MPs seen by Jagan's side, Rosaiah said, "Family members of MLAs are not barred. Jagan is not an enemy, he is a member of the Congress, He is an MP."

Rosaiah stood by his decision to ask his Cabinet colleagues and party legislators to keep away from the yatra.

"Whether or not to take part in the yatra is an individual choice but if any minister, MLA or MLC indeed takes part in the yatra, it will be a clear violation of the high command," Rosaiah had told reporters on Wednesday.

But Rosaiah today said he believed that his MLAs won't go with Jagan. "This is the advice given by the Congress party. I expect my friends to be disciplined," he said.

No salary for Athgarh MLA
TNN, Jul 7, 2010, 10.28pm IST

BHUBANESWAR: Two weeks after the Orissa High Court declared Ramesh Rout's election from Athagarh constituency in 2009 as "null and void", the Assembly has stopped all privileges and allowances which Rout was receiving in his capacity as a legislator, official sources said.

"I have directed the Orissa Legislative Assembly secretariat to stop the salary, allowances and other facilities that were being given to Rout as a member of the legislature," Speaker Pradip Amat said. Official sources said the Speaker gave the direction after formally receiving the June 23 order of the high court in which the election to the Athagarh constituency was declared "invalid" and fresh polls were ordered. Rout had subsequently prayed the high court to put a stay on the verdict, allowing him to function as an MLA till final disposal of the case in the Supreme Court. But it was not granted. On Tuesday, Rout moved the apex court against the high court ruling.

Official sources said Rout had attended the Assembly on June 23 and 24 despite knowing about the high court decision. This, going by legal provisions, means the Speaker can take punitive action against him and impose a fine of Rs 500 per day. High court Justice R N Biswal, while acting on an election petition filed by senior BJD leader Ranendra Pratap Swain, observed that the rejection of Swain's nomination papers during the 2009 Assembly polls was "improper", hence necessitating a fresh poll.

The returning officer had rejected Swain's candidature on grounds that he had not submitted the party ticket in original.

1 dead, 3 hurt during Rath Yatra in Puri

PURI: Tragedy struck the Rath Yatra in Puri on Tuesday when a woman was killed and three were injured in a stampede during pulling of the chariots of the sibling deities Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra.

The stampede occurred when the wooden chariots carrying the presiding deities of the 12th century shrine were moving past the royal palace and the woman, identified as 65-year-old Bijaylaxmi Mohanty of Markandeshwarsahi area here, and three others fell down, police sources said.

After their fall near the chariot of Lord Balabhadra, the four came under the surging crowd of devotees and were later pulled out by volunteers who took them to a hospital here, they said.

"The woman was declared brought dead by doctors while three others are undergoing treatment. Their condition is stable," Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Puri, Narahari Maharana said.

Earlier, after a series of rituals, the deities were taken off the Ratna Sinhasana, the bejewelled throne, and out of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

The deities were taken down 22 steps known as 'baisi pahacha' through Lion's gate in an elaborate ritual called 'Pahandi' to the beating of gongs as devotees and sevayats jostled to have a closer look and to touch them.

At first Sudarshana, the celestial wheel of Krishna-Vishnu, was taken out and placed in the chariot of Subhadra. It was followed by Balabhadra, Subhadra and finally Jagannatha.

Jagannath was ensconced in the largest of the chariots, 45-feet high 'Nandighosh' which has 16 huge wooden wheels.

It was followed by the chariot of Balabhadra, the 14-wheeled 44-feet-high 'Taladhwaja' and lastly that of Subhadra known as 'Darpadalan' with 12 wheels and standing 43 feet high. Security personnel cordoned off each chariot.

The Gajapati King of Puri Divya Singha Deb arrived from his palace on a silver-plated palanquin for the 'Chhera Pahanra' ritual.

He offered prayers to the deity and then swept the platforms with a golden broom and sprinkled flowers and fragrant water.

Among the VIPs who turned out to watch the Rathayatra were Governor M C Bhandare and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Devotees poured into the seaside town since early morning to watch the ceremonial pulling of the chariots on the 'Bada Danda', as the Grand Avenue is known, with security personnel deployed in strength keeping a watchful eye.

'Rickshaw driver who assaulted women had duplicate badge'
TNN, Jul 14, 2010, 02.00am IST

PUNE: In a twist to an assault case filed with the Bund Garden police station, it came to light that the accused, an autorickshaw driver, was using a duplicate badge of the Regional Transport Office. The rickshaw driver allegedly assaulted a mother-daughter duo for refusing to pay extra at their residence on July 9.

Following the badge number provided by the complainant, the police traced the real owner of the badge, identified as Giridhar Rathod (54) of Wadgaonsheri. However, in the identification parade, the complainants told the police that Rathod was not the person who had assaulted them.

Bilkish Merchant (80) and her daughter Sohaila (40) of the Maurya Apartments were allegedly assaulted by an autorickshaw driver after they refused to pay extra money, apart from the actual fare. The mother-daughter duo had hired the rickshaw from Jehangir hospital. The driver had demanded Rs 50 more than the actual fare of Rs 25.

The driver also tried to molest Sohaila and threatened them with dire consequences if they went to the police. Sohaila, meanwhile, had managed to snatch the driver's badge. Later, she had lodged a complaint with the Bund Garden police station.

When contacted, Rathod told TOI that the badge was given to him in 1982 and his licence is valid till December 14, 2010. "I have nothing to do with the attack on the women. The women also told the police that I am not the one who had attacked them,"Rathod said.

Rains continue to elude state
TNN, Jul 14, 2010, 01.55am IST

PUNE: Most parts of the state witnessed no rainfall on Tuesday, and no drastic improvement in the situation is expected in the next 48 hours. However, good rainfall is expected in the northern parts of the country during the same period, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Maharashtra has been witnessing subdued rainfall activity for more than a week. "No major pro-rainfall system is present in the Bay of Bengal, which will intensify the rainfall activity in state,"said Medha Khole, director (weather forecasting), IMD. "However, a trough in the Arabian sea will lead to good rainfall in the coastal areas of the state. The Konkan region will receive comparatively more rainfall."

One or two spells of rains will take place in Pune and nearby areas, Khole said. Since the start of this season, the city has received 324.9 mm rains, which is 120.2 mm more than the normal. However, the catchment areas of the four major dams — Khadakwasla, Varasgaon, Temghar and Panshet — received very little rains. The current total availability of water in these dams is 1.29 TMC.

According to Khole, parts of the country close to the foothills of the Himalayas are likely to witness good showers. "On the other hand, low rainfall activity is expected in western and central India."

As per the IMD forecast, widespread rain or thundershowers would occur in West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh, while fairly widespread rain or thundershowers would occur in the north-eastern states, Lakshadweep, west coast, Andaman and Nicobar islands and Orissa.

Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, west Madhya Pradesh, Rayalaseema, interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will receive scattered rain or thundershowers, the forecast added.

TNN, Jul 15, 2010, 10.23pm IST

RAJKOT: Hiten Mehta, the 50-year-old deputy engineer from the city who had gone missing since Tuesday, was found dead early on Thursday. Rajkotians woke up to the shocking news that Mehta's body had been lying in the underground water tank of his own apartment building all this time.

Police officials said, a few neighbours sensed a foul smell in the parking area of Om Shivam Apartments in Jagannath plot area and started checking. They opened the underground water tank and were shocked to find Mehta's body. Police officials and firemen who rushed to the spot fished out the body and sent it for postmortem.

Mehta, who worked as deputy engineer with irrigation department, had gone missing on Tuesday around 12.30 pm.

He had told his wife Nita that he was going to garage to get his two-wheeler repaired. However, at 1.30 pm, a neighbour alerted Nita about some of Mehta's effects lying in the parking lot. Among them were his vehicle keys, a wallet and his pair of spectacles. Mehta's phone was unreachable by then and the worried family approached the police by late evening.

According to A division police inspector HK Rana, police found three passport-sized photographs of an unidentified woman and some religious scriptures from Mehta's pocket. Police also found his cell phone in his pocket. Police and FSL experts are continuing investigations.

Mehta was also involved in real estate business for last few years, sources said. Preliminary PM reports suggest that there is no sign of any injury on the body. Neither murder nor suicide can be ruled out at this stage, Rana said.

City Cong cuts water supply to RMC chief's house
TNN, Jul 15, 2010, 10.24pm IST

RAJKOT: As a mark of protest against the ongoing intermitted water cuts being imposed in the city by Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), city Congress leaders and workers cut off the water connection to the municipal commissioner's house on Thursday.

The city Congress body had launched their protest programmes last week soon after RMC had made fresh announcements about the cuts to be imposed every third day in various zones of the city.

Sources said, in the morning, the workers barged into the commissioner's bungalow and disconnected the main pipeline supply water into the house. A Congress leader had warned of this action earlier.

However, soon after the incident, police, too, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

City congress leader Jasvantsinh Bhatti said, "Water cuts during monsoon are illogical. Despite significant rain, RMC officials imposed the water cuts in the city last week. We will continue our protest until the move is not reverted."

Book with rare Indira pics, Nehru's letters
PTI, Jul 15, 2010, 10.25am IST

KOLKATA: The Visva-Bharati University is coming out with a book containing unpublished letters written by Jawaharlal Nehru to Rabindranath Tagore besides rare photographs of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The coffee table book, titled 'Three Chancellors', will depict the relationship between the Nehru-Gandhi family and the Tagores.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi personally came to the aid of Nilanjan Banerjee, the editor of the book, and mailed him some rare photographs of her late mother-in-law Indira Gandhi.

"Responding to our request, Mrs Gandhi has recently sent us 18 rare and personal photographs featuring Indira Gandhi during her student days in the Visva-Bharati," Banerjee, who works as a curator of Tagore's museum at Santiniketan, told PTI.

The book will also for the first time publish little-known letters written by Nehru to Tagore and different vice-chancellors of the university, he said.

Some rare images of Indira Gandhi's signature in Bengali and her taking merry-go-round joy rides with Nehru at Santiniketan will also be a draw for the readers.

The compilation illustrates the lives of former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi during their tenure as chancellors of the university.

"The attempt is to see the three statesmen from the Nehru-Gandhi family through the looking glass of Visva-Bharati," Banerjee said.

Inspired by the gurukul ashram, Rabindranath Tagore had set up an open air school in Santiniketan that blossomed into the Visva-Bharati university in 1921.

Nehru, an ardent disciple of Tagore, actively took part in the affairs of the prestigious institution after he became its chancellor in 1951.

"In one of the confidential letters to be printed in the book, Nehru had written to the then vice chancellor K C Choudhuri in 1959 giving him a free hand to deal with hooligan elements in the campus," the author said.

He had also convinced his teenage daughter Indira to study in this unconventional university in 1934.

Though Indira had to discontinue her education at Santiniketan the next year due to the illness of her mother, she always gave credit to the influence the varsity and Tagore's ideals had in her life.

Along with her son Rajiv Gandhi, Indira strived to realise Tagore's vision of a global and borderless place of learning in Visva-Bharati, said to be very close to the poet's heart.

Nehru's three-page telegram to Tagore's son Rathindranath after the poet's demise will also be featured in the book, Banerjee said.

In an exchange of letters between Nehru and Indira, the father-daughter duo shared their reverence and admiration for the principles and thoughts of Tagore and his university.

Tagore also had high regards for Indira and had even given her the middle name of 'Priyadarshini' out of love and admiration.

Some of the letters written by Tagore will also find place in the book to be published this October.

In one of these letters written in 1935, Tagore had pleaded with Lord Wellington, then viceroy of India, to release Nehru from prison considering her wife's ill health.

The book will also incorporate some speeches, convocation addresses, and comments in the guest book, anecdotes, newspaper clippings and miscellaneous memorabilia of Visva-Bharati's three famed chancellors.
