This is interesting:
In 2020-21, 83 Million Tons of cargo was hauled on the Indian National Waterways. Target is 200 Million Tons per year by 2030.
In what we call the Gold Standard of Waterways development, Europe, 524 Million Tons was hauled over the waterways in 2021.
Now one can argue that its only 16% of European figure now and will only be 40% of European figure by 2030, but the fact is that not only do Europeans have a headstart, they also have an almost $20 Trillion economy, much larger than Indian economy. So our figures are not too shabby.
Would be interesting if we had the ton-kilometers statistic as well.
