almost all China Airplanes were test flied by PLAAF test pilots from CTFE since the very maiden flight...the PLAAF has been involved in the whole R&D phase of most of Military planes...the pilots from the PLAAF operation units have been trained and test flied the new model before the handover and commission ceremony...so your standard User trail should have been done...

we haven't heard the Y20 Project got the key milestone-- Design Certification and Production Certification Approval yet...so these Leading-Use batch planes might not be the final status of Serial Production planes...but we don't think many changes would happen based on the historical record...some 'bugs' could be found and the small modification would proceed during this first unit's operation ...Not surprisingly, the Y20 project could get the first important milestone- Design Certification Approval within 1 year...

the operation unit would set-up the training /operation and maintance outlines for all coming PLAAF Y20 units, train more pilots/ ground crew and receive more jets ...normally in one year, this unit would get the Combat-ready certification and begin the formal operation...

what a mixed breed of C-17 and Il- 76 and still they have not upgrade IL-76 engine :):):)
I personally do not mind. Atleast they have started and got themselves to level one. After this its all refinement until they mature. Surely they will get better engine in future. In contrast our airforce with its stubbornes with FADEC engine let go the opertunity to learn building a C-130 J class aircraft called MTA. I wonder what good these 20 goody goody FADEC engine airlifters will do when 50 -60 Y-20s and Y-30 starts supplying men and support to border.

Thanks @shiphone.

Also what about the new engines for Y-20? (All the pictures you have provided of the commissioning ceremony are with the older Mig-31 fighter jet based engine.). This one change in itself will have a major impact on the Y-20 coming into full operations as a true Make-In-China product. In any case you people should count yourself damn lucky that your armed forces are willing to start flying even with only half the real demands met, in the hope of future developments.

In our case there would have been shipload of columns in newspapers, how the armed forces are being saddled with useless items.

TIA

the imported D30 number is limited ,but in the past years quite many H-6K have joined in PLAAF very fast, so...

besides the D30-KP-2,these Y20 LSP/SP might fly with the WS-18 - the clone of D30-KP-2...WS18 and WS 20 are Parallel projects or WS18 is the back-up safety for WS20...WS18 also gets loads of space in the future coz around 30 IL76 varients and newly built H-6K are flying with D30...

BTW ,they are all 12.5-13.5 tons class engine although WS-20 would be much efficient...50 ton or 60 ton lift capacity is not something remarkable .you might miss the point...but WS20 would come soon. news reports said the project going well, when it's open to the public officially ,I might be able share more 'unofficial' here...lol...

no comment on India Case, if you insist in the so called 'Luck' factor...I have no word but 'god bless you and good luck'

an unofficial pic just few months ago...Lol...
BTS a IL-76 testbed with 4 WS-20 is right on the way

Off course there is and that is why the Chinese are eventually going to change the current ones on Y-20.

With a maximum takeoff weight of 200 tonnes, the Y-20 is ideal for transporting cargo and personnel over long distances in diverse weather conditions.

"The Y20 entering into service marks a crucial step for the Air Force improving its strategic power projection capability," said Air Force spokesperson Shen Jinke.

The Air Force needs more and better transport to better fulfill its military responsibilities, including safeguarding national security as well as domestic and international rescue andrelief work, Shen added.

The Air Force has provided aid and delivered relief supplies to Pakistan, Mongolia, Thailand, Nepal and other countries as they were hit by disasters in recent years.

The indigenously designed and developed Y-20 took its maiden flight in January 2013, and made its debut at the 10th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in November 2014.

1) Necessity.
2) And it helps that they are willing to take risks and not bitch about every little lapse.
3) Sanctions for which they should be thankful to the Americans, since these sanctions allow them to be ahead of India.

At the end of the day defence expenditures don't go very much above 2%-4%. They are willing to spend that to get a reasonable solution today instead of waiting for an unobtainable future perfection when it is no longer required.

And its not like they are using this fighter engine for only the transporters. It is there in their refuelers and bombers also.

The basic difference is that fighter engines are low-bypass designs while transport engines are high-bypass. But theoretically, the Core of a LB engine can be used to make a HB derivative, but adding/removing stage-compressors.

Infact it can be put to many other uses (Kaveri core for example found use even as a Marine gas-turbine), but such modifications are unlikely to be as capable as a core designed specifically for that purpose - so this drama is usually avoided.
