Something interesting is happening in our vaccination drive . From April 25th if you check data 2nd dose was almost equal or 10 % less than 1st on every single day of vaccination but since 16th May that changed drastically now 2nd dose is not even touching 20 % of daily vaccinations numbers . Like it has completely come down to less than 2 lakh .

Today after a week of 12-14 lakh we touched 15 lakh vaccinations

One more day of pathetically low vaccination numbers for one big state TN and another medium size state TG state has stock of close to 6.5 lakh doses .

Is it lockdown which is affecting vaccinations in these two states ?

Government invites R&D proposals on Critical Components and Innovations in Oxygen Concentrators

A new initiative by the government will soon catalyze R&D on critical components and innovations concerning Make-in-India Oxygen Concentrators to meet the emerging healthcare requirements to combat the COVID 19 epidemic.

Despite being on the list of essential medicines prescribed by the World Health Organization, oxygen remains a precious commodity, especially under conditions of medical distress.

This initiative involves invitation for proposals from scientists from educational and research institutes/ laboratories, universities, and medical institutions, start-ups, and industries by Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body of Department of Science and Technology (DST), to investigate and innovate in the development of (individual/portable) oxygen concentrators. They will be in domains of alternate materials and mechanisms for oxygen separation; design, development, and manufacturing of critical components such as valves and oil-less compressors, design improvements for greater performance, AI-optimized oxygen flow devices, and oxygen-level IoT sensors, and so on.

The scientists from industries should align with investigators from academic / research institutions as co-investigators. Funding for industry partner(s), with respect to R&D leading to commercialization, will be forwarded to Technology Development Board (TDB), DST, for their consideration. The duration of the project is one year.

This will help meet the need of indigenous concentrators working on newer approach of providing supplementary oxygen in hospital wards and ICUs and as an inexpensive therapeutic oxygen source for patients under home isolation.

Proposals should be submitted in the prescribed format through SERB online portal www.serbonline.in on or before 15th June 2021.

More than 21.80 crore vaccine doses provided to States/UTs

More than 1.90 crore doses still available with States/UTs to be administered

As part of the nationwide vaccination drive, Government of India has been supporting the States and UTs by providing them COVID Vaccines free of cost. In addition, the Govt. of India has also been facilitating direct procurement of vaccines by the States/UTs. Vaccination is an integral pillar of the comprehensive strategy of Government of India for containment and management of the pandemic, along with Test, Track, Treat and COVID Appropriate Behaviour.


Implementation of the Liberalized and Accelerated Phase-3 Strategy of Covid-19 Vaccination has started from 1st May 2021.


Under the Strategy, in every month 50% of the total Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) cleared vaccine doses of any manufacturer would be procured by Govt. of India. It would continue to make these doses available to the State Govts totally free of cost as was being done earlier.


Government of India has so far provided, both through the free of cost category and through direct state procurement category, more than 21.80 crore vaccine doses (21,80,51,890) to States/UTs.


Of this, the total consumption, calculated based on average up to 22ndMay, 2021, including wastages is 19,90,31,577doses (as per data available at 8 AM today).


More than 1.90 crore COVID Vaccine doses (1,90,20,313) are still available with the States/UTs to be administered.


Furthermore, 40,650 vaccine doses are in the pipeline and will be received by the States/UTs within the next 3 days.

Demand still high but first signs O2 crisis is waning

The data maintained by an empowered group of officers tasked with oxygen supply shows total oxygen supplied to hospitals hit a peak of 8,944 metric tonnes (MT) per day on May 9 dropped to about 8,100 MT a day on May 18-19.


Early signs of the waning of the oxygen crisis are visible in the country with liquid medical oxygen supplied to hospitals over the last 72 hours showing a decline for the first time in almost a month.
“Actual consumption has dropped to 8,000 MT a day from around 8,900 MT a day,” an official said. While the quantity supplied has dropped, it is still much higher than the demand recorded during the first wave of Covid-19 last year.
