NEW DELHI: Scientists working on a mathematical model to chart the trajectory of Covid-19 cases have noted that the peak of new infections could be reached within the next 24 hours at around 4 lakh cases (seven-day average) and peak of active caseload could touch around 40 lakh between May 14-18.

“Our model shows that the peak of new cases, taken as 7- day average, will be reached by Tuesday and the peak of active infections would be around 40 lakh at lower end of our earlier prediction range,” Manindra Agrawal of IIT Kanpur told TOI on Monday while sticking to last week's observation

The model, called SUTRA, had on April 25 predicted peak value of new infections between 3.4 to 4.4 lakh during May 4-8 and peak value of active infections between 38-48 lakh during May 14-18. “We have been consistent since then,” said Agrawal, flagging possibility of lower end of the observed range.

He also said third wave of the pandemic was unlikely, adding an important caveat that vaccination needs to pick up speed and that people do not abandon safe behaviour again.

“If as planned, 40% of the population would be vaccinated by October. Besides, a huge percentage of people would already be infected by then. “Mathematical models can also provide a mechanism to predict alternate scenarios corresponding to various policy decisions such as non-pharmaceutical interventions. In the case of Covid-19, it is clear that the nature of the virus has been changing very rapidly. In such a context, any prediction for Covid-19 must be continually readjusted, sometimes almost daily.”

His administration initially cut down education budget to override unnecessary overhead expenditures which was touted by opposition as attempt to cut down literacy. Yet literacy reached 79% and then he introduced NEP and would be pushing education budget over 6% of GDP (until corona spoiled his game).

"Indian virus", UK Brazilian and American Virus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) are all fine. Just calling it Wuhan virus or Chinese virus is racist.

Nobody said Kumbh wasn't a mistake. There is a difference between fools gathering vs criminals travelling around India to just spit on people and places. CAA protest was the sower of seeds.

Also, Kumbh was allowed when it was apparent that COVID-19 strain was weak or no longer prevalent in India.
This new strain B.117.1 is causing sudden surges and deaths. And given that this strain isn't native to India but to Europe and Ameriacas. It's quite likely that "farmers" who travelled from UK, US and Canada to protest in India brought this to Delhi.
