The EU has commenced legal action against AZ for breach of contract as they didn't even supply half the vaccines promised. I believe the UK is paying around 4 USD per dose to AZ despite providing around £400 million to fund vaccine development. Meanwhile the EU has entered a fresh contract with Pfizer for 2 billion doses at 20 EUR each over the next 2 years and Israel paid 30 USD each for its Pfizer shots.

Again, I'm not defending SII but we have to give the company some credit for committing enough vaccines at cost to the Indian government for vaccinating the most vulnerable. Now, as the government is opening up the market to all players including Pfizer, Moderna etc, we cannot really fault SII or BB for wanting to cash in. In fact grant of a commercial license from March 2021 onwards was part of SII's initial agreement with GoI IIRC.

The sad reality is demand is far outstripping vaccine supply globally and it would be surprising if private players did not attempt to extract maximum profit for (what they would consider) producing vaccines at risk before their safety and efficacy were established.

Dayyyuummm.....all that ‘official’ gormint sponsorship and resultant mad rush has resulted in this higher price. I say higher considering its based on century old technology unlike pfizer/moderna. Of course there may be other “reasons” for this pricing, experts here can throw light on it.
