What choice do you have? The Pfizer one which will end up costing 3-4k per shot with extremely low chance of vaccine integrity being maintained thanks to our less than optimal setup. Covaxin is the only comparable shot with similar economics and I think that one too might cost the same in the open market. And they have not announced any price.

BTW, I already have serious doubts about cold storage integrity of the vaccine supply chain is maintained till the syringe hits the arm. That could explain the significant amount of breakthrough cases that we are observing all over.

One big component that you aren't talking about is whether the delivery is at factory gate or the delivery is at hospital gate.

The air fare, the maintenance of cold chain upto the delivery if borne by SII will jack up the cost.

GoI took delivery at factory gate. But state govt. would want delivery at nearest airport ( state capital?) as they have no logistics support in Maharashtra.

Hospitals might want it at their hospital gate as it reduces headache of logistics for them.

Until we are clear about this, the pricing cannot be dissected.

Spending Rs. 1200 on vaccine per year(should it ever come to that) is still less than coughing up anywhere between Rs. 60,000-120,000 a day on a ventilator with no surety of coming out alive and in the right shape.

A friends brother is on a ventilator for the last nine days in Delhi. Tested negative for RTPCR thrice though he was symptomatic. A CT scan showed extent of lung damage and he was immediately admitted. There is no guarantee he will walk out alive. Doc's have reported 60% lung damage.
He is 29 years old, non smoker, non drinker with no comorbidities.

Center can very well ignore Kejrudali and Uddhavuddin if they see it fit. However I think in this case the humongous challenges posed by the opening up would be tremendous and need to be managed at local levels with local administration thinking on their feet. Provided they want to do their jobs I mean. Which for the above 2 I seriously doubt.


PS : I remember paying $17 or so back in 2010 for my first and only flu shot ever, because it was subtly encouraged by my customer and the el-cheapo insurance my employer had didnt cover it.

Central Govt as of now still runs the little scheme where they provide subsidized vaccines afaik.
imo Central Govt should run a targeted program aiming to vaccinate the poor folk, because State Govts will be focused only on (((vasooli)))
