Bharat Biotech's anti-coronavirus vaccine 'Covaxin' has been approved for children above the age of 12 years by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine 'Covishield', manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) has been approved for those above the age of 18. The DCGI had on Sunday approved Bharat Biotech's 'Covaxin' and Serum's 'Covishield' for emergency use in the country, paving the way for a massive inoculation drive.

The permission to both the vaccines -- Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Serum Institute's 'Covishield' -- has been granted for restricted use in emergency situations. Both the vaccines will be administered in two doses, the DCGi said in the permission letter.

India had on Sunday announced the formal approval for the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Bharat Biotech anti-coronavirus vaccines, saying they will be administered in two dosages each. VG Somani of DCGI said both the firms have been granted permission for "restricted use" in emergency situations.

The approval by the DCGI was given on the basis of recommendations submitted by a coronavirus subject expert committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).

Following the formal approval from the DCGI, questions were raised on the emergency use permission given to Bharat Biotech's coronavirus vaccine without its phase 3 trials. Congress asked the government to explain why mandatory protocols and verification of data were dispensed with while warning the approval could be "dangerous".

However, the DCGI, while announcing approval to Bharat Biotech's vaccine, said Covaxin is "safe and gives a robust immune response". The drug regulator also asserted that no vaccine with even the slightest safety concern would be approved for administration and said the vaccines are 110 per cent safe.

Later on Sunday evening, the DCGI gave licensing permission to Bharat Biotech to manufacture Covaxin. The drug regulator also asked Bharat Biotech to submit its safety, efficacy, and immunogenicity data from the ongoing phase I, II, and Ill clinical trials till the completion of trials.

Meanwhile, Serum CEO Adar Poonawalla has said the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine 'Covishield' will be sold to the Indian government at Rs 200 per dose and Rs 1,000 per dose to the private buyers.

Adar Poonawalla of the Serum Institute told AP that the first 100 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine are being sold to the Indian government at a “special price” of Rs 200 per dose, after which prices would be higher.

Bharat Biotech CMD Dr Krishna Ella said in a press conference on Monday that the pharma giant will soon conduct a separate trial to check how the coronavirus vaccine would work on children. "In Phase 3, we are testing the vaccine on people above 12 years. We also plan to have clinical trials on children aged 2 to 12 years. We will be submitted a proposal to the Drug Controller General India soon," he said.

Asked if children were also part of the phase 2 trials wherein the firm saw 380 participants, Dr Ella said, "Yes, there were children in Phase 2 but that is above the age of 12 and below 18. In Phase 3, there are only adults."

Should children be vaccinated for Covid-19?
A senior doctor who is also a lead investigator in Bharat Biotech's clinical trial said, "There is no data in the world that shows that the new strain is dangerous for children. The trials done for Covaxin had very few children in Phase 2 double-blind, randomised trial. At this point, it is unnecessary to even look at children being vaccinated. DCGI's permission could lead to exploitation through vaccine manufacturers," the doctor added.

Sources suggest that as of now, there have only been adult participants in the Phase 3 trials of Bharat Biotech's Covaxin with no one between the ages of 12-18 participating in the trials in India.

An intensivist and paediatrician at Sir GangaRam hospital in New Delhi, Dr Dhiren Gupta told India Today, "Children should be vaccinated, but only after about 3-6 months of the priority groups being vaccinated first. Currently, Bharat Biotech's Phase 2 data only had 380 participants with a very small number of those between the ages of 12-18 involved in the trial process. A separate and larger study needs to be done to ascertain better results."

"We are confident that Covaxin will be effective against the UK mutant virus strain. Data on Covaxin's efficacy against UK mutant virus strain will be there in a week," Dr Gupta said. Some reports in the UK suggest that the new mutant strain is spreading faster among children.

He went on to add, "There have been reports in the UK, but we have not seen that in India, there has been an overcrowding in paediatric wards in India."

In a recent case, a child and her parents who returned from the UK were found to be infected with the mutant strain. Doctors said there were no complaints regarding a severe form of infection in the 2-year-old infant.

Price is not a constraint for those who can afford. logistics should work out themselves the moment hospital see a healthy demands for moderna / Pfizer vaccine...

- Start an extremely quick in-and-out vaccination program. An app based self-reporting of AEFI can be thought of.

- Drive through should be encouraged wherever possible. I ride up/drive up to a booth, get jabbed, move away.

- Take mass vaccination sites out of already overburdened hospitals. Enlist schools, stadiums, even hotels and health clubs.

DRDO develops SpO2 based Supplemental Oxygen Delivery System: A boon in current COVID-19 pandemic

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed SpO2 (Blood Oxygen Saturation) supplemental Oxygen Delivery System for soldiers posted at extreme high-altitude areas. Developed by Defence Bio-Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bengaluru of DRDO, the system delivers supplemental oxygen based on the SpO2 levels and prevents the person from sinking in to a state of Hypoxia, which is fatal in most cases, if sets in. This automatic system can also prove to be a boon during the current Covid-19 situation.

Hypoxia is a state in which the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues is inadequate to fulfill all the energy requirements of the body. This is exactly the situation that gets replicated in a Covid patient due to the virus infection and has been a leading factor in the current crisis.

The electronic hardware of the system is designed for functioning at extreme altitudes featuring low barometric pressures, low temperatures and humidity. The software safety checks incorporated into the system are critical in ensuring the functional reliability of the system in field conditions.

The system reads SpO2 levels of the subject from a wrist-worn pulse oximeter module through wireless interface and controls a proportional solenoid valve to regulate the oxygen supply to the subject. The oxygen is delivered from a lightweight portable oxygen cylinder through nasal nares. The system is available in various sizes from one litre and one kg weight with 150 litres of oxygen supply to 10 litres & 10 kg weight with 1,500 litres of oxygen supply which can sustain for 750 minutes with a continuous flow of two liters per min (lpm).


Since the system is indigenously developed for operation in field conditions, it is unique with its dual qualities of being robust & cheap and is already in bulk production with the industry.


The system is a boon in the current pandemic as it can be used in the household for moderate Covid patients for Oxygen flow therapy with flow controlled at 2/5/7/10 lpm flow. The automatic usage has huge advantage in the household, as the oximeter would give an alarm for lower SpO2 value. It will automatically increase/decrease the O2 flow based on SpO2 setting which can be auto adjusted at 2, 5, 7, 10 lpm flow rate. The optimal O2 flow rate conserves the O2 resources/O2 management and greatly increases the endurance.


With its availability and simple to use facility by a common person, the system shall greatly reduce the workload and exposure time of doctors and paramedics to monitor the SpO2 levels of the patient. The automated Calibrated Variable Flow Control for Low O2 levels (User pre-set, <90%, <80%) through a calibrated Flow Control Valve (PFCV) will facilitate in economising the oxygen supply (1-10 lpm with ±0.5 lpm). A moderate Covid patient requires longtime moderate O2 supply 10Litre/150bar–10kg–1500 litres which can sustain up to 750 minutes.


This automated, easy to use Oxygen Delivery System now available is a great boon particularly in these critical times when medical resources are stretched to their limits. Its proliferation would mitigate the crisis in management of such huge number of covid patients in many ways all across the country.

Certainely the issue is with storing and distributing these vaccine in country like India. They need incredibly low temp storage units.
otherwise Pfizer vaccine is currently the best vaccine in the whole world. US Bio companies are simply unmatched in the world.
Only Oxford and other UK groups comes close with Russians old Bio groups with distant third.

One theory that i read, cannot recollect from where, was that their population is adapted to "compliance". If CCP tell them to eat & shit, they do that without question. Hence when CCP tells them to mask up, sanitize, remain indoors & maintain social distancing, they do that out of habit, ofc. inaddition to this being a matter of life & death.

There are no dissenters there who would question if masks are necessary or jokers who would hold demonstrations saying that COVID/mask is conspiracy etc. Now even if they did exist, they would have been soon "disappeared".

I do not buy this theory though.

In one of Coupta Ji's video he told that the chinese had to wear masks even at home and that they would isolate +ve cases no matter what (some baby was separated from both parents tested +ve or something like that who were tourists). And their ward level party workers would hunt for people flouting rules, surprise visits in localities and at time individual properties, etc.

Here in India if you organize drive through, Maar Kutai will start within Half an Hour among people.

Vaccination in All kind of hospitals in India is the only option just open it for all age group above 18.

Also accelerate tests and approval of Nasal variant of BB Covaxin and give its license to all major Bio/Pharma group in India.

Mingling of seniors going in for their 2nd dose with humongous (and mostly lawless) crowds in India is a definitely a cause for worry.
I definitely am worrying, since I need to take my parents and mother in law for their 6-8 week interval dose after May1.

It should not be a big problem if there are large no of vaccination centers.
When the vaccination program was started on 1st march, there were so many centers in Noida and surrounding areas. Even Samudayik health Kendra were selected as centers. Also, there were multiple slots in a day.
There was literally no rush anywhere. However as the time progressed, many centers were shut down and load on other centers increased.

If we keep vaccination centers in high no then there should not be high rush anywhere.
