A double whammy! Get Carona and you're all messed up. Then get robbed in hospitals upto Rs 16 lakhs for treatment resulting in death by shock! You're screwed twice over.

So, maintain distance!! Social distancing as they say!

The case of the inflated Covid-19 treatment bill

covid1.jpg

  • Covid-19 treatment bills in India's private hospitals haven't changed much since pre-virus days. It's about the huge margins on diagnostics, consumables and medicines — in some cases as high as 500% on medicines and more than 1,000% on consumables. With many patients being admitted for 10-15 days, the costs add up, resulting in bills of between Rs 4-16 lakh.

  • Common investigations liver function or kidney function tests, which costs Rs 400-800 at best in independent labs, are being billed at Rs 3,000-3,500. Similarly, procalcitonin, a test to check for bacterial infections, costs Rs 1,100-3,600 in an independent lab but can cost an inpatient Rs 5,500 to over Rs 9,500.

  • Another example is meropenem, a high-end antibiotic. Procured by hospitals for Rs 500-900 per gm it is charged at the MRP of Rs 3,330 per gm. With a patient requiring 2-3 gm in a day, that adds thousands to the bill each day.

  • Patients are also being charged for first-class single rooms or even for single deluxe rooms in the name of isolation. Chest CTs are being insisted upon and despite being stable, with many being admitted to ICUs where charges are significantly higher. No rational or standard guidelines are being followed on how many times patients need to be tested or making them repeat tests. Little wonder than a patient ran up a bill of Rs 80,000 within eight hours of being admitted!!

  • Hospitals are also charging patients Rs 2,200 or more for every personal protection equipment (PPE) kit and other protectionwear such as coveralls and masks. Good quality PPE kits may cost the hospital Rs 800-Rs 1,200. With rational use and if the cost is spread over the many patients, it would add up to about three kits per patient, which hospitals are charging at MRP.

  • Finally, one hospital bill had charges for 'care and hygiene', for 'Covid biomedical waste disposal' and for a Covid resident medical officer that added up to almost Rs 3,500 a day!!

Stay healthy, stay rich! Or you may land up a pauper!

I stated 2 weeks ago that India is yet to hit its peak. I pray that I am wrong but talking to many back home the compliance seem very poor and taboo and social stigma after being infected is quite high.

Governments must reassure and show positive outcomes and recoveries a lot for people to cooperate, get tested and follow quarantine without fear.

That graph is very very worrying. Especially now that we have 'opened' up.

Do we die of ccp virus or of hunger due to poverty?
Chicken or egg really.

And despite what learned members here would argue, more testing seems to be the real reason for the spike. Well....

We are beyond fucked, if you ask me.

Contract tracing seems off the table as an option in the 4 super spreading states.
Note, KL and KA succeeded in containing the spread singularly due to aggressive conctact tracing. Once that's no longer possible, allah reham kare.

Increasingly, the spreaders are a-symptomatic and have no travel history. Its a fact the worst affected 4-5 states have graduated to stage 3/community spread. Its almost impossible to contain the spread now. The virus has to run its course taking many bodies with it. Only sensible thing to do now is to isolate those states and not lift state borders for any reason. Cruel yes, but atleast the shit doesn't spread.

Meanwhile, test test tests in the less severely affected states till economy is fully restarted within those borders atleast and livelihoods restored.

DRDO has installed its Ultra Violet disinfection chamber at the Cochin International Airport in Kerala. The chamber would be used to disinfect the baggage coming at the airport. The chamber has been developed by a laboratory in Cochin: DRDO officials

Baggage at Kochi airport to get UV bath via DRDO’s disinfection system

Bengaluru: When the first batch of passengers land at the Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) on Thursday night at 9.340 pm (IST), their baggage will pass through a UV (ultraviolet) disinfection chamber.

Developed by the Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), a top-notch Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) wing situated at Thrikkakara near Kochi, the UV system has completed all installation checks ahead of its first test.

NPOL is one of the leading labs of DRDO undertaking several Sonar-linked-technologies for the defence use, especially Indian Navy.

The need for such disinfection system was felt soon after the Centre decided to fly back the stranded Indians from different parts of the world.

CIAL officials felt that disinfecting the baggage in different and sizes using chemical spray wouldn’t be an effective idea.

“We are absolutely happy within the shortest possible time the NPOL scientists developed a system that can take care of our current needs. We have already completed the installation of the UV system to disinfect the baggage. We wanted a safe and efficient system and NPOL has delivered it satisfactorily,” CIAL Director A C K Nair told Onmanorama.

He said the airport staffs have been already trained about the protocols of the use of the UV system.

“Everything is set and our staffs are fully aware of the process, which is simple. The baggage will be shifted from the aircraft ramp to the UV tunnel before they go through the regular scanners ahead of the Customs hold,” says Nair.

Stop Imports

NPOL Director S Vijayan Pillai told Onmanorama that his team grabbed the opportunity to deliver a system that was already being prepared for the use for naval ships and submarines.

“What is being set up at CIAL is an extension of a UV baggage scanner developed for our own use and for Indian Navy as well. Post-COVID, we were ready with a UV system to disinfect the baggage of vendors coming to NPOL,” says Pillai.

According to him, NPOL will be installing a similar system at the entry gate as a precautionary measure.

The scientists had already readied a UV system for ships and submarines to disinfect the ration packs/ baggage before they got on-board.

“For CIAL we made modifications so that it suited the conditions there. The UV bath to the baggage is an additional step before the X-ray scanner. We wanted to install this at the ramp itself that opens out from an aircraft. Owing to vibration issues on the ramp, we decided to fix the UV chamber at the first point soon after the luggage gets unloaded,” Pillai said.

Intensity Trials

He said a prototype of the UV chamber has been already given to the Ernakulum Medical College (EMC), a designated COVID hospital, for intensity trials.

“The doctors at EMC have been tasked to guide us accurately as to how much UV rays are needed to disinfect a piece of baggage so as to combat coronavirus. We are awaiting the results and accordingly will make the modifications,” Pillai said.

He said the private industries in India will be playing a key role in large-scale production of the system.

“Hopefully, a firm like KELTRON should be able to take up the mass production of these systems. The idea is to avoid our dependency on imported systems. We are keen to make Indian products available,” Pillai added.

Based on the inputs from the EMC officials, NPOL will decide on the intensity of UV rays, distance and the number of lamps to be used in the system.

Kannur International Airport officials too have approached NPOL to install a similar device for baggage disinfection.

“We have proved our technology and installed the system within a day. It is now the turn of the industry to call the shots and make this in bulk so that we don’t have to depend on import,” says Pillai.

NPOL has been at the forefront of developing many products to fight coronavirus in the last two months.

The sanitizers made at NPOL are being used by the entire Kochi City Police force. The Southern Naval Command too had received NPOL’s hand sanitizers.
