India to Enhance Natural Defence Against COVID-19

Natural defence mechanism of the body (innate immunity) plays a key role in the fight against COVID-19 and other viral infections. While the world is working towards developing vaccines and antiviral agents for the management of COVID-19, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has decided to repurpose an approved immunomodulator called Sepsivac to enhance innate immunity of the body to limit the spread of COVID-19 and fasten the recovery of COVID-19 patients.


Sepsivac is expected to protect the close contacts of COVID-19 patients and health-care staff by boosting their innate response and thereby preventing them from acquiring the disease. It can be effective to provide quicker recovery to the hospitalized COVID-19 patients, who are not critically ill. Sepsivac could also prevent the progression of disease wherein patients will need ICU management, say CSIR scientists.

Sepsivac is expected to protect the close contacts of COVID-19 patients and health-care staff by boosting their innate response and thereby preventing them from acquiring the disease.

New clinical trials are now approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). These will be randomized, double-blind, two-arm, controlled clinical trials. These clinical trials are in addition to the recently announced trial on evaluating the efficacy of the drug for reducing mortality (deaths) in critically ill COVID-19 patients.


Sepsivac contains heat-killed Mycobacterium W (Mw). It is found to be extremely safe in patients and no systemic side effects are associated with its use. Sepsivac was developed under the New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative (NMITLI) program of CSIR and is manufactured by Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Ahmedabad.


Natural defense mechanism is a fast, first and efficient immune response for identifying and eliminating COVID-19 and other viruses. Cells of human immune system like Macrophages, NK cells offer such protection. The majority of persons coming in contact with COVID-19 or other viruses either do not get the disease or get a milder form of the self-limiting disease as innate immunity is adequate.

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates are the key components of any drug that produces the intended effects. India is largely depended especially on China for supply of APIs and drug intermediates. Now Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, is collaborating with another Hyderabad-based integrated pharmaceutical company, LAXAI Life Sciences, to develop and manufacture APIs and drug intermediates. The initiative may help in reducing the dependency of the Indian pharmaceutical sector on Chinese imports of these ingredients.


IICT, a laboratory under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is working with LAXAI for synthesis of drugs being used in the fight against the Corona Virus. The collaboration will primarily focus on Umifenovir, Remdesivir and a key intermediate of Hydroxy Chloroquine (HCQ).

Premier Indian Tech Institute Develops COVID-19 Detection Method Amid Complaints About Chinese Kits

New Delhi (Sputnik): Coronavirus cases in the country are on a continuous rise and the requirement of test kits has only been increasing. The apex research lab, the Indian Council For Medical Research has been ordering huge numbers of test kits in order to expedite the testing rate so that the virus can be controlled.

Since a majority of Chinese test kits for COVID-19 turned out to be faulty, the country’s premier engineering college, the Indian Institute of technology Delhi (IIT-D) has developed a new method of diagnosis and also secured the approval of the top research lab, the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) for the aforementioned.

The IIT-Delhi team has used comparative sequence analyses and identified unique regions (short stretches of RNA sequences) in the COVID-19 /SARS COV-2 genome, which are not present in other human corona viruses. This has paved the way to specifically detect COVID-19.

“This method uses primers targeting unique regions of COVID-19 that were designed and tested using real time polymerase chain reaction. These primers specifically bind to regions conserved in over 400 fully sequenced COVID-19 genomes. This highly sensitive assay was developed by extensive optimisation using synthetic DNA constructs followed by in vitro generated RNA fragments", the statement by IIT-Delhi said. ​

Touted as a cost-effective technique, the method is "probe-free" and reduces the testing cost while at the same time delivering accurate results.

According to IIT-D, they are eyeing large-scale deployment of the kit at “affordable prices” with suitable industrial partners as soon as possible.

India had obtained nearly a million COVID-19 test kits form China and issues regarding the accuracy of kits in terms of test results were soon raised by authorities. This sparked fear of a compromised COVID-19 response from the government.

Therefore, the Indian government has suspended the use of China-supplied rapid test kits and the ICMR has subjected these kits to rigorous quality checks.

According to the latest figures, there are 23,077 COVID-19 positive cases in India. The country has witnessed 718 deaths so far. On the other hand, 4,749 people have recovered in the country.

Glad to know that our local institutions (and pvt players based in Pune and elsewhere) are discovering methods/kits to detect the virus, but then when and where will the productions start?
We are still buying Chinese kits, and now the ones from South korea. Why aren't we going full guns blazing on their production in india itself?
