US is least of my concerns and their model is a discussion for another time. I posted that to highlight one of the many things about India that I am really proud of - world leader in generic drugs even after threats on patents from western nations and constant arm-twisting on quality control. Now, the same nations are scrambling for an import of the medicines.

Regarding HCQ - it seems to be effective at the initial stages of COVID-19 and is routinely advised in the sub continent specially for Malaria. When nothing else is working, something that is even mildly effective can be a big thing.

Read here:
https://www.nih.gov/news-events/new...chloroquine-potential-therapy-covid-19-begins
Its immunomodulater like tons of others , used for AIDs. And no HCQ is not ROUTIENELY used in malaria treatment.

Office of Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India issues simple guidelines, for controlling spread of COVID-19 in densely populated areas

Posted On: 13 APR 2020 7:31PM by PIB Delhi

The Office of Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India issues simple guidelines, with precautions and measures, for controlling the spread of COVID-19 in densely populated areas. In particular, these relate to areas where toilets, washing or bathing facilities are shared.

The key goal of the proposed measures is to emphasise sanitation and hygienic practices and suggest key interventions that can greatly help in controlling the spread of the disease.

Addressing the urgent need to proactively put in place more mechanisms that enable regular hand-washing by residents in these communities, the guidelines propose swift installation of do-it-yourself hand-washing stations that have been used world-wide to contain epidemics.

Foot-operated stations not only reduce the chance of transmission by eliminating direct contact with potentially high infection areas, but also reduce the amount of water used by people during hand-washing.

Designs proposed allow self-assembly by community volunteers and authorities, using affordable and locally available materials, even during lockdown and supply- chain challenges.

Installing permanent foot operated stations in public and community toilets encourages hand washing while reducing water use.

Chlorinating the water dispensed at such hand washing stations adds additional effectiveness and should be considered.

An outline of good toilet practices to maintain sanitation and hygiene in communities have also been clearly outlined. Simple measures such as the need to always wear face-covers and footwear in the toilet, washing hands immediately after use and maintaining social-distancing have been highlighted.
Disinfectants to keep public areas and homes clean and sanitised have also been detailed.

The guidelines emphasise on the need for ensuring that authorities, volunteers and communities co-manage these solutions to ensure sustainability. They also emphasise the need for full cooperation and respect for all frontline workers and sanitation staff who are playing a critical role in ensuring the containment of the disease.

Prof K. VijayRaghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to Government of India emphasizes that “In our push against the COVID-19 pandemic, India has come together to apply the most effective enabling measures appropriate to each context. Our densely populated places, Dharavi is but one example, need special attention. The manual, put together by the team at the PSA’s office, brings out how frugal but effective tools can have disproportionate positive impact. Sites of community interaction, such as common toilets and bathing areas are the focus. Community leaders, NGOs, corporates etc. are urged to implement these and other measures ”.

It is suggested that corporates, NGOs, and organisations looking to support tangible interventions that will help contain the disease especially in densely populated urban areas, adopt, support and sponsor solutions presented in these guidelines and work with communities and volunteers to implement them.
These guidelines will be made available in all our languages starting with Hindi, Marathi and Urdu, in addition to English.

What do you guys think?
will the lockdown increase? and if it does for how many days more ?
Lock down will slowly ease in a staggered way depending on the color codes from 15th onwards..
Some states are already relaxing lock down measures.
Some optimistic calculation say..we will be in a good clear by the middle of May.

Coronavirus: Why India can't depend on UN, WHO and old world order

Observers have flagged novel coronavirus pandemic as the biggest human crisis since World War II. On evidence, all three, the UN, the WHO and the World Bank, have failed the world as novel coronavirus hit country after country and destroyed their economies. All three face a serious challenge to their credibility, and this challenge is a major lesson for India to fend for itself and prepare itself better for future global human crisis.

Mumbai gets three drive-through testing sites
On the go: Swabs being collected at a drive-through lab at Sewri on Sunday.
Aditya AnandMUMBAI 13 APRIL 2020 02:53 IST
UPDATED: 13 APRIL 2020 02:54 IST

Located at Lower Parel, Sewri and Kanjurmarg, they will be managed by private lab

Mumbai now has three drive-through testing sites for COVID-19 swab collection, making it easier to take samples while maintaining social distancing.

These sites, set up at Indiabulls Finance Centre in Lower Parel, Celestia Spaces in Sewri and Lodha Supremus in Kanjurmarg will be managed by SRL Diagnostics. The first drive-through sample collection site was launched in Gurgaon’s Sector 29 on April 11.

The facility will collect the test sample without people having to step out of their cars. The patient remains in the passenger seat, next to the driver, or in the left rear seat. Nasal or throat swab sample is taken through the car window, and the entire process (drive-in entry to exit) takes five to 10 minutes.

The swab is sent to a laboratory for testing and the patient can receive the report the same day if the sample is given before noon.

“Sites like these are needed greatly as active cases in Mumbai are increasing exponentially and the drive-through concept works as a great tool to fast-track sample collection. Not only is the method faster, but also limits human interaction with potentially infected people, preventing the spread of the virus,” said Ravi Aggarwal, regional COO (south, west, central India and international business), SRL Diagnostics.

Mr. Aggarwal said the method originated in South Korea and is becoming popular all over the world. “The idea behind drive-through testing is simple: keeping potentially sick patients in their cars and allowing plenty of ventilation throughout the testing facility,” he said.

SRL Diagnostics has set up a toll-free number (1800-222-000) for making the drive-through test appointment. The documents required for the testing are a form filled by a qualified physician, doctor’s prescription seeking a test and Aadhaar card.

On calling the toll-free number, the patient will be asked to share their e-mail address on which all the required forms will be shared. Alternatively, the patient can download the forms from the SRL website. In case any patient does not have an e-mail address, WhatsApp is used to send and receive all the documents. The drive-through testing facility is available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all days.

Dr. Prabal Deb, director, lab operations and chief histopathologist, clinical reference lab, Mumbai, SRL Diagnostics, said, there was a huge shortage of personal protective equipment like masks, gloves, hazmat suits and so on, and thus the need to find innovative ways to conduct tests efficiently. “By collecting samples through these drive-throughs, we are not compromising on the testing protocols and simultaneously doing everything we can to protect the well-being of our brave and selfless frontline soldiers by minimising human-to-human interaction,” Dr. Deb said.

Airlines had strongly lobbied for restarting flights . Mostly on 15th limited domestic flights are ready to operate , Indigo has told its pilots and crew to be on stand by and ready to operate if govt gives go ahead . But how are they going to manage crowds at boarding gate needs to be seen .

One airline has even asked to reopen international routes asap as its bleeding badly with parked aircrafts

Just a question, will flights and trains run after 14th?

Starting domestic routes between green zones should not pose risk but Delhi and Mumbai strictly be kept out because of high number of cases.

International flights ban should be extended .

Yup, Maharashtra has tested almost 40000, Delhi some 15000 and Raj some 32000.

They are aiming to take it upto 10000 per day in Mumbai alone.
Testing happens only on ICMR guidelines, they are testing more because the cases are increasing rapidly. There is clearly some community transmission in Mumbai and maybe Delhi (don't know about Rajasthan). The high testing is warranted.
