Covid-19: Govt may extend lockdown as multiple states and experts are requesting
3 min read . 05:56 PM ISTStaff Writer ( with inputs from Agencies )
  • Telangana CM on Monday said 'lockdown is the only weapon we have to control the spread of this disease'
  • Modi has been asking countrymen to be ready for a long battle against the coronavirus pandemic, and exhorted people to not feel tired or defeatedcoronavirus.

India's tally of COVID-19 positive cases rose to 4,421, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Tuesday. Out of the 4,421 cases, 3,981 are active cases while 325 have been cured or discharged and one has migrated. The total toll stands at 114.

Modi has been asking countrymen to be ready for a long battle against the coronavirus pandemic, and exhorted people to not feel tired or defeated while expressing confidence the country will emerge victorious in its fight.

Since there is no vaccine to fight COVID-19, the government has stressed that social distancing is the only way to check the spread of the virus. Lockdown is considered the best way to keep people indoors.

Inter-state travel by public transport, including trains and buses, is banned, and so is domestic and international air travel.

Many states are also asking for restrictions and lifting complete lockdown. Today I heard in Republic TV that Govt. has divided the states in this two categories.

I my opinion those which are asking to extend the lockdown are more or less reflecting their inability to take serious actions. And CM Yogi never said that he wants to extend the lockdown he only told that only if its utmostly needed.
So as per you those CM who can take strict actions will be able to contain the spread of COVID 19 even after the lockdown is uplifted. DUDE!!!!

Additionally those guys who are saying lockdown will be lifted after 14th April, I don't know what shit they are smoking or their eagerness to get out pf their houses is clouding their judgement. It's as simple as that localized transmission has already started in these hotspots in our country. Districts seeing zero cases might get restrictions uplifted but that too with limits.

Anti-parasitic drug can kill the growth of coronavirus in cells within 48 hours finds new study

Researchers have found that an anti-parasitic drug already available around the world can kill the novel coronavirus grown in cell cultures within 48 hours, an advance that may lead to the development and trial of a new clinical therapy for COVID-19.

According to the study, published in the journal Antiviral Research, the drug, Ivermectin, stopped the virus, SARS-CoV-2, from growing in cell culture within 48 hours.

"We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it," said study co-author Kylie Wagstaff from Monash University in Australia.

Actually everybody is asking the same thing. Just let the small businesses and local stores to open other than that everybody is fine with all the restrictions and what not's, including travel ban & restrictions of gathering of two or three people at the same place.

Don't want to discuss this topic anymore, just to clarify you Indian pharma is importing API from china not because they are the only source because its cheap raw material and their profit margins stays healthier . If you still not happy i can share a screen shot of conversation between me and someone at senior level in Top pharma company in hyderabad who export heavily to USA .

If push comes pharma companies will source here also just that it has to come at price which don't shrink their profit margins

we will not be begging for sure .

You are forgetting that our drug supplies are dependent on China . One move from china even we will be begging .. and it's not just about hydroxychloroquine, it's majority of drugs. China isn't called manufacturing house for nothing.
More important question is how many tablets are required to treat 1 patient.? Got it
1 patient - 14 tablet.
So I don't understand the urgency of trump freaking out over this. Moreover only 20-30 percent coronavirus patient requires treatments.

The three-week pan-India lockdown, imposed in a bid to curb the transmission of the novel coronavirus, is entering its final phase with just one week left. However, the sharp spike in number of fresh COVID-19 cases across the country has raised questions on whether the government will lift the lockdown or look for a staggered exit.

Indicating a phased lifting of the lockdown, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asked Union ministers to prepare a “graded plan” to slowly open departments in non-hotspots of the COVID-19, and work on a war footing to mitigate the adverse impact of the pandemic on country's economy.

PM Modi clearly indicated that the lifting of the lockdown in one go is very unlikely while discussing the modalities of lifting it. He also asked the ministers whether the restrictions should be lifted sector-wise or district-wise

According to Dainik Jagran, the Centre is mulling a mega plan after April 14 under which all states will be divided into four categories and lifting of lockdown and resumption of services will be planned accordingly.

Sources said that a complete lockdown will be extended in areas which have turned into coronavirus hotspots. Meanwhile, relief is expected in areas where no fresh cases have been reported in the last seven days. However, new set of restrictions may be put in place if new cases come up in those areas.

While this is clear that the lockdown will not be lifted in one go, the draft exit plan suggests that the categorisation of states will be done based on the number of people infected from the deadly virus.

Here is how the states and Union Territories may be categorised for a phased lifting of the lockdown:

Category 4: States where more than 50 cases of COVID-19 have been reported will be put under this category. Such states will remain under complete lockdown and all services will remain suspended, other than the essential ones. States and UTs will be put in the category if they have two or more cases per 10 lakh population or if more than 40 per cent of the districts are affected from the virus.

Category 3: States with more than 20 cases, 30 per cent affected districts and 1-2 cases per 10 lakh population will be put in the third category. In these states, lockdown will continue, but some restrictions might be eased along with essential services.

Category 2: This category will include those states which have reported less than 20 cases of coronavirus and less than 30 per cent of the districts are effected from the deadly virus. Also, these states must have one or less than one cases per 10 lakh population.

Category 1: This category will include those states which have reported less than five cases so far and no fresh cases have been reported in the last seven days.

What restrictions may be eased

Under the mega plan, railway, bus and air transport services may be eased for states falling in Category 3 but this relief may be limited within the states as inter-state travel will remain suspended. The coronavirus-hit states will remain isolated and entry and exit into such states will not be allowed.

While travel restrictions may be eased for states under Category 3, economic activities, educational and other services will remain suspended.

For states under Category 2, educational and economic services may resume after a go ahead from the authorities. Road, rail and air transport services will resume in these states but travelling to Category 3 and Category 4 states will not be allowed.

As per the proposed mega plan, no restrictions will be imposed on states which fall under Category 1.

Considering the population density of our country that will prove fatal. Yes it will spike up the cases and we all will be looking at a mass outbreak even if that will take a little longer. People are suffering due to this complete lockdown, that's a truth no one can deny. But I am not seeing the uplifting of the restrictions anytime sooner atleast in these hotspots and the places near them.

It was exactly like this 7 days ago and then that rocket spike happened thanks to TBJ . Now we don't know where the next rocket will come from unless we see 7 days of decline we cant take anything serious

So, the day before yesterday the number hit from new cases were 600+. Yesterday it was 489.

And as of today without Delhi, Telengana &UP the number is 311. For those who are concerned about MH. Its been updated twice today and the number is 77.

Indian researchers begin work on novel coronavirus genome sequencing

Novel coronavirus is a new virus and researchers are trying to figure out all the different aspects of it. Two institutes of Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad and Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), New Delhi have started working together on the whole genome sequencing of novel coronavirus.

“This will help us to understand the evolution of the virus, how dynamic is it and how fast it imitates.

This study will help us to know how fast it evolves and what are the future aspects of it” said Dr Rakesh Mishra, Director, CCMB while speaking with India Science Wire.

Whole-genome sequencing is the method used to determine the complete DNA sequence of a specific organism’s genome. The approach for sequencing the latest coronavirus involves getting samples from patients who are tested positive and sending these samples to a sequencing centre. Genome sequencing need very large number of samples for study. “Without much data if you make any conclusion that may not be right. At the moment we are accumulating as many sequencings as we can and once, we have few hundred sequencing with us then we will be able to make many inferences from many biological aspects of this virus” said Dr Mishra.

Three to four people from each institute are continuously working on the whole genome sequencing. In the next 3-4 weeks researchers would be able to get at least 200-300 isolates and this information would help them to make some further conclusion about behaviour of this virus. For this purpose, National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune has also been requested to give virus that has been isolated from different places. This will help the scientists to cover the whole country to get a bigger and clearer picture. This will help the institutes to establish the family tree of the virus. Dr Mishra told that based on this they can study from where the virus has come which strain has more similarity, the varied mutations and which strain is weak and which one is strong. “This will give some strategic clues to understand it and to implement better isolation strategies” he said.

In addition to this, the institute has increased the testing capacity. A large number of people are undergoing testing and they would go for mass screening. This will help them to identify the number of positive cases and then send them for isolation or quarantine.

Coronavirus: Cyprus and Israel secure chloroquine from India

Cyprus and Israel secured another five tons of chloroquine as part of efforts to meet the needs of patients in both countries during the coronavirus crisis, it was announced on Tuesday.

In a joint statement, Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou and the Ambassador of Israel in Cyprus Shmuel Revel said that through a joint effort and Israeli logistical assistance five tons of API chloroquine were imported from India.

“Together with existing stocks, this joint effort will ensure that we will have at our disposal very important quantities of Chloroquine needed for patients in Cyprus and in Israel,” the two officials said.

Sorry, I forget to write. Hotspots should be under complete lockdown and adjacent places of hotspots should be placed under qurantine and/or scrutiny to check and make sure.

As per this plan only 13 states & UT will be able to lift the lockdown 4 of those states are from NE, 3 of them are UT, one small states like Goa . One big state is Jharkhand and next bigger is Himachal and chattisgarh

Instead of lifting lockdown on these states they can better extend it for another week and lift it nation wide on April 21st

Mumbai :

All members of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's security detail who may have come in contact with a COVID-10-positive tea vendor near his private residence, Matoshree in Mumbai's Kalanagar, will be tested for possible infection.

Over 170 police and the state reserve police personnel, some of whom were part of the Chief Minister's security detail, have been moved from the area as a precautionary measure.

The tea vendor had reported fever, cough and breathlessness after which he was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai. Several members of Thackeray's security staff were known to have visited the stall before the lockdown came into effect and with the majority of coronavirus patients being asymptomatic, authorities are taking no chances when it comes to the spread of the virus in the area
