Chinese media image in the rest of the world which it had carefully built over past 20 years with all positive news and prosperity has taken a big hit. Chinese spent close to $10 billion a year to polish its image in last 20 years. Now it is all waste. All over the world Chinese are receiving a cold shoulder. Hotels, restaurants, shopping centres have been closed. Chinese visitors are being hounded to leave. Most of the returning visitors from China have mostly fantasy stories of disease walking by. Although it may not be true but the impression it creates in the minds of the people stays. Now this lost image will take many decades to rebuild. The SAARS outbreak in 2003, the media and people scare was overcome by local governments as one time outbreak, easy to contain. The local governments in the host countries helped to beat away the SAARS bad publicity. This time around the host countries are unable or do not wish to help. Chinese image in last three years had already suffered, thanks to President Trump and Chinese, their bad behaviour of export only and not to import was already very low. Now outbreak of Coronavirus has lowered it too much.
No vaccine is forthcoming to get over Coronavirus soon. It will be a year before before any treatment is invented. In the meantime, nobody will go to China to buy and returning visitors will not be allowed back. Most countries have stopped issuing visas to Chinese business or visitors. Net result....... Chinese economy will suffer big. It may not recover from this shock. The ghost of Mao Tse Tung must be turning in his grave.
The West still need consumer products, other low labour cost countries will have to step in. Already low priced products in stores in the West have suffered a steep price escalation. Thanks to President Trump of 20% import duty. Now their availability will considerably reduce. It is a God sent opportunity for others in Asia to step in.
