First person gets experimental coronavirus vaccine

U.S. researchers gave the first shot to the first person in a test of an experimental coronavirus vaccine Monday — leading off a worldwide hunt for protection even as the pandemic surges.

With a careful jab in a healthy volunteer’s arm, scientists at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute in Seattle begin an anxiously awaited first-stage study of a potential COVID-19 vaccine developed in record time after the new virus exploded from China and fanned across the globe.

“We’re team coronavirus now,” Kaiser Permanente study leader Dr. Lisa Jackson said on the eve of the experiment. “Everyone wants to do what they can in this emergency.”

The Associated Press observed as the study’s first participant, an operations manager at a small tech company, received the injection inside an exam room. Three others were next in line for a test that will ultimately give 45 volunteers two doses, a month apart.

This vaccine candidate, code-named mRNA-1273, was developed by the NIH and Massachusetts-based biotechnology company Moderna Inc. There’s no chance participants could get infected from the shots because they don’t contain the coronavirus itself.

It’s not the only potential vaccine in the pipeline. Dozens of research groups around the world are racing to create a vaccine against COVID-19. Another candidate, made by Inovio Pharmaceuticals, is expected to begin its own safety study — in the U.S., China and South Korea — next month.

Italy reports 349 new virus deaths, taking total to over 2,000

Rome, Mar 16 (AFP) Italy on Monday reported 349 new deaths from the novel coronavirus, taking its total since last month to 2,158, the most after China.

The number of official COVID-19 fatalities has more than doubled since Thursday, when Italy''s toll topped 1,000 for the first time. Italy now has 27,980 infections, compared to 15,113 four days ago.

It has reported more than 700 deaths in two days.

Among specific regions, the overwhelming majority of the fatalities remained largely confined to northern regions, where the virus first started spreading around cities such as Milan.

The Italian financial capital''s Lombardy region recorded 1,420 deaths, of 66 percent of Italy''s total -- about the same share it has had throughout the crisis. But the neighbouring Piedmont region around Turin, which is home to the Italian auto industry, has seen its number of deaths and infections nearly double in two days.

Piedmont reported 111 deaths and 1,516 infections on Monday, compared to 59 deaths and 873 infections on Saturday.

The Lazio region around Rome has recoded 19 deaths and 523 infections. (AFP)

Some fun happenin in Andhra right now.

Apparently my CM Jagan Mohan Reddy said on live t.v that Corona isn't a worrysome pandemic as it is potrayed by the world.
He said it mostly affects oldies, and can be treated using Paracetamol and we need to use Bleaching Powder to contain it(gd dat he didn't say let's use Harpic, Akki wd've committed suicide before Housefull 10).
Dunno if this is already posted, but that's wat we are dealing with in Andhra.

What's more funny is even Didi cancelled local body polls in Bengal, but our exalted nutcase CM is furious dat Modi- Shah got municipal polls postponed in AP citing Corona and is banging his head to the wall without naming them. Fcker wants 2.8 cr voters to stand in queue during a pandemic.[emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787]

I've purchased my Paracetamol pack and Harpic. All set to battle Covid19, as proposed by my exalted nutcase CM who is an 'A1' accused on 13 chargesheets filed by CBI.
Didi even extended holidays for educational institutes to 15th Apr. Bengal is taking the issue seriously it seems.

Pompeo warns China against 'outlandish rumours' on coronavirus
The call comes after the State Department on Friday summoned the Chinese ambassador, Cui Tiankai, to denounce the promotion of the conspiracy theory - which has gained wide attention on social media.

7055 deaths so far , Italy with 27k positive and 2100+ deaths , Looks like italy will surpass china death count by this week for sure with number of deaths they are reporting last 2 days . Spain is now going up the ladder faster than france and germany with huge spike in their positive cases and deaths
It is early days, but the global Coronavirus death toll is still a bit lower than the number of deaths, from the common flu ,for the 2019-2020 US influenza season.

"Laboratory confirmed influenza associated hospitalization rates for the overall U.S. population remain moderate compared to recent seasons, but rates for children 0-4 years and adults 18-49 years are now the highest CDC has on record for these age groups, surpassing rates reported during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Hospitalization rates for school-aged children (5-17 years) are higher than any recent regular season but remain lower than rates experienced by this age group during the pandemic.

...............

Pneumonia and influenza mortality has been low, but 144 influenza-associated deaths in children have been reported so far this season. This number is higher for the same time period than in every season since reporting began in 2004-05, except for the 2009 pandemic.

…………..

CDC estimates that so far this season there have beenat least 36 million flu illnesses, 370,000 hospitalizations and 22,000 deaths from flu."

For anyone interested, the latest official Coronavirus figures, in South Korea. They are as accurate and comprehensive, as you're likely to get.

Scroll down for Table 2 ,which shows the distribution of cases by sex and age groups and the fatality rate for each group.

https://www.cdc.go.kr/board/board.es?mid=a30402000000&bid=0030&act=view&list_no=366557&tag=&nPage=1

The overall fatality rate in South Korea ,among confirmed Coronavirus cases, is 0.92%.
The fatality rate is 9.51% for 80 and above and 5.33% for age 70-79.
From the figures in the link , 53/788 x 100% or 6.72% is the fatality rate for everyone aged 70+ for the disease.

It's 1.38% for the 60-69 age group and 0.38% for the 50-59 age group.

As far as we can see in South Korea, It's not really been a threat, for adults below the age of 50 or children.
