In 2018, adult literacy rate for India was 74.4 %. Adult literacy rate of India increased from 48.2 % in 1991 to 74.4 % in 2018 growing at an average annual rate of 11.78%.

My 2 paisas on democracy vs dictatorship.
IMO among other factors, rivals also play a big part in a country's economy.

the prime rival of China was Japan from the '60s to the '90s (at least culturally). Japan was the first example of the 'Asian tiger' in the '80s Japanese economy had overtaken the UK, Germany, and even the Soviet Union. second, only to Amerika. together Japan and Us constituted 45% of the world's GDP.

China's prime rival was way ahead of them at that time compared to our rival Pakistan which was already declining at that time.

During that time India was quite comparable to china economically even with License raj and socialism, It wasn't until 1992 that China really started to gain some edge over us.

The CCP had no excuse for the rise of Japan, therefore they started aggressive industrialization. which is evident from looking at the steady decline in the number of workers in agriculture from 77% in 1977 to just 33% in 2012.

Socialism, License Raj, looser rival, corrupt congress government, etc.. resulted in India's state compared to China.

I believe that if there are strong enough rivals a nationalistic dictatorship would be more beneficial than a nationalistic elected party. but If the dictator is corrupt. Then Pakistan, Cambodia, and North Korea are perfect examples of corrupt dictators ruining the once good country(Zia, Kim Jung, Pol pot).
