China reported nearly 13,000 Covid-related deaths in hospitals between January 13 and 19, after a top health official said the vast majority of the population has already been infected by the virus.

About 80% of China’s population has been infected with Covid-19 since restrictions were lifted in early December, Chinese health authorities have said.

The figure, which equates to about 1.2 billion people, prompted some pandemic experts to estimate that more than 1 million may have already died, far more than the government’s official tally of about 72,000.

A wave of Omicron cases engulfed China after the government abruptly ended its zero-Covid policy last December, lifting restrictions shortly before the start of the lunar new year and Spring festival. On Saturday, China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said about 80% of the country’s 1.41 billion people had been infected in this wave.

In the week leading up to the lunar new year, the CDC reported 12,658 deaths, adding to the official pandemic toll of almost 60,000, but one which most observers believe is far below the real figure. Until a dramatically increased update earlier this month, the official toll from this wave was reported as being below 60 deaths.

Skyrocketing case numbers in December quickly overwhelmed data collection processes. Coupled with a narrow definition of a Covid-attributed death, official tallies soon appeared far below the reality on the ground, and the government was accused of lacking data transparency.

Beijing rejected the accusation and defended both the zero-Covid policy and its sudden dismantling. Some health officials have acknowledged the data discrepancies but said now was the time to focus on the health response.

The data and transparency concerns have left experts looking for other ways to estimate the impact of the outbreak.

Prof Robert Booy, an infectious diseases paediatrician at the University of Sydney, said the death toll was likely to be between 600,000 and 1 million. Booy, and other experts who spoke to the Guardian, said the virus was probably already spreading far more widely than acknowledged prior to the lifting of restrictions.

After China abruptly cancelled its zero-Covid policy, the virus has taken over a majority of the population. Hospitals are overflowing with patients, medical supplies are running low and crematoriums are overwhelmed with bodies. A huge number of deaths are being reported, although Beijing doesn't attribute most of them to COVID-19.

With the health system unable to manage the scale of the disease, most people have been left to fend for themselves. There is a shortage of medicines, test kits and other such supplies.

Amidst this dire situation, people have come together to help each other. There are apps offering test kits and medicines to those in need via donations. A Straits Times report mentions how one woman suffering from a high fever, was hoping that the government will hand out medicines to her and her daughter.

But when that did not happen, she turned to one such app where one stranger offered her two test kits and another who had recovered from Covid-19, offered to provide two ibuprofen pills.

A country that was following everything that the government was telling them to do for the past three years during the pandemic, suddenly finds itself alone.

President Xi Jinping urged the public at the beginning of 2023 to “make an extra effort to pull through” the virus wave. Even the state media told people to “take primary responsibility for their own health".

Just ahead of the Chinese New Year, Xi tried to install hope in the people, saying “dawn is just ahead.” Acknowledging for the first time that the current Covid wave has been "fierce", he expressed concerns over the spread of the virus in the countryside where medical facilities and resources are insufficient.

However, there are many people who contracted the infection and didn't receive any help or support from the government.

Experts say that non-availability of the government during the citizens' time of need reflects poorly on it and might have shaped public opinion against it.

Went through this thread completely yesterday. They guy was posting about this in 2020 when he got banned.

Obama himself visited Ukraine during 2005 when he was just a senator. US took control over few Soviet Era Bio Labs in Ukraine.

Coronavirus family has over 30-40 virus and they all cause cold and cough. This variant also will become common cold causing virus.

If you had cold in past 1 month which lasted over 1 week, there are 90% chance that if tested you will get covid positive result.
Most cases are not lethal, and people are able to recover well at home itself.

many of my contacts are having classic symtoms - cold, cough, loss of taste smell , fever for 2-3 days ... fever medicines, plenty of hydration and rest seems to be the course to follow.

Yes, no special remediation required. Even a covid test is not necessary in >99% of the cases.

So many countries have stopped tracking the new case I don't know why we are still tracking it and increasing our total count as other nations have stopped reporting new figures.

Exactly. We have become normalized to the effects of Covid. It's just another variation of the flu. Society worldwide has largely adapted to Covid now. It is an endemic disease.
