The Golden Age of Black Ops|Nick Turse

The Golden Age

"The command is at its absolute zenith. And it is indeed a golden age for special operations." Those were the words of Army General Joseph Votel III, a West Point graduate and Army Ranger, as he assumed command of SOCOM last August.

His rhetoric may have been high-flown, but it wasn't hyperbole. Since September 11, 2001, U.S. Special Operations forces have grown in every conceivable way, including their numbers, their budget, their clout in Washington, and their place in the country's popular imagination. The command has, for example, more than doubled its personnel from about 33,000 in 2001 to nearly 70,000 today, including a jump of roughly 8,000 during the three-year tenure of recently retired SOCOM chief Admiral William McRaven.
70,000, that's a lot of highly experienced special forces...

Danish Jaegerkorpset (JGK)

Country :Denmark

insignia

Jagerkorpset wears the maroon beret with a brass emblem depicting a hunter's bugle on a black felt liner. The beret is issued after completion of a 16 week selection course. After one year of additional satisfactory service and training in JGK the wearer is issued the shoulder patch "JÆGER" (English: Hunter) and may call himself by this name.

Motto

Their slogan, which is Latin, Plus esse, quam simultatur translates to Mere at være, end at synes ("More to be, than to seem") in Danish, meaning that the soldier's capabilities do not have to be widely recognized or boasted - they are only more effective if unknown.

The Danish Army's Jaeger Corps, or Jcegerkorpsety is one of two premier special forces unit of the Danish armed forces. Stationed at Aalborg Air Base, the Jaeger Corps traces its origins to the year 1785.Jagerkorpset is composed of around 150 highly trained soldiers with special expertise in counter-terrorism, demolitions, parachuting, and combat swimming, HAHO and HALO parachuting, infiltration, sabotage, reconnaissance and more. The corps regularly trains with similar units from different countries, such as the US Navy SEALs, British SAS and the Danish naval special forces group, the Frogmen. The corps is based on the structure and modus operandi of the British SAS.Approximately 150 operators serve in the JGK, identifiable by their maroon berets, which have badges of a hunter's horn. Jaegers have similar missions to the FKP, though primarily on land. These include unconventional warfare, special recon, direct action and counterterrorism. Based on experience in WWII of resistance against the Germans, guerrilla warfare is emphasized in JGK training. To be selected for Jaeger training, a candidate must already be serving in the armed forces.

An elite soldier must have a very good health, good physique, self-discipline, self-confidence and have the willingness to work under extreme conditions. The service also requires good morals, self-criticism and endurance as well as a good basis for cooperation.

History

In the years after the Seven Years' War began around the European armies to create light sections are already in peacetime. When they had come to play a major role in the North American War of Independence, they were found around the 1780s in almost all armies. The US General Francis Marion, also called "the Swampfox", had established small patrols, which he had great success in the fight against the British. 1784 took over the 16-year-old Crown Prince Frederik government power and when Gustav III of Sweden had begun to rearm heavily by the Norwegian border, reduced the Crown Prince a commission that would come with suggestions to improve the army. At the head of this was his uncle Prince Carl of Hesse, who was an energetic and insightful officer who was very interested in the ease of service. One of the first results of the commission's work was the creation of Jægerkorpsene Zealand and Holstein. Initially, it was for a company of 100 men plus officers and officers.
As the first chief was appointed major in the infantry Chamberlain Andreas Undall, he was born in Norway and came to Elsinore at Kronborg Castle, where Special Forces were stationed, his young son in the Norwegian national costume and came to form the model for hunters' uniforms, there came to be a green dress, below this bar hunters a yellow vest and yellow pants on your head one opkrammet hat with white pon pon with green tip on the legs long boots instead of infantry hated short boots. The hunters as well keep watch at night got instead of tents handed a poncho. They had handed the rifle and hirchfænger and triangular bayonet. The crew was promoted and had to profess one of the three denominations: Lutherans, the Reformed and Roman Catholicism. It was selected personnel, as the king decreed that you had to be a Danish citizen, "having a good outer" as it was called, "seems to have genie", it had documents with certificates that were unpunished, which was unusual, so readily that the elect had knowledge of forest creature or were hunters, at least they should be able to shoot well.
With the creation of Jægerkorpsene laid the foundation for the later silviculture, since hunters were promised positions in the FSD after service so sent home hunters also with their outfit, which means that today is not hunter uniforms on Tøjhusmuseet. It is Sealand Jager Corps, or 2. Jager Corps as the current Jager Corps has branch mark from and also its glorious history, through the engagements they took part in the battle on the nest in 1801, where Jaegercorps however, was not aboard and fought, but were posted along the Sound coast including part Corps a single loss of life. In 1848 and 1864 fought Corps, which it says "bravely and with great loss." However it must be noted that Special Forces were not used to the type of fight it was created for, Corps was also during 64 war changed to the 18th Battalion. However, the story that they were different: Battle of Overseas April 24, 1848, here managed Jaegercorps with 200 men to slow down the Prussian march with 5000 men against Flensburg so much to the strength stalled and did not reach, hunters, however, was overpowered and General Wrangel would see the oldest officer in charge, who had cause to this, the General expressed great appreciation and handed the captain Scharffenberg who had come instead of the boss, who had fallen, his saber. The Corps was also used to being back in the positions at Dybbøl April 18, 1864, during the storm, so they secured a safe withdrawal of Alssund to Als. 18th Battalion ended up being closed as nærforsvarsbataljon in 1953, the battalion flag stands in parole hall at Slesvigske Fodregiment in Haderslev.
In the 1960s during the Cold War, which here was at its peak and when the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, it was decided that Denmark should create a special unit which primarily could be catching body during any gray period up to a possible conflict between Warchawapagten and NATO. Thus was created the current Jager Corps 1 November 1961. In October 1961 inkaldtes the first entrance exams, 130 met and which were taken 13 which were immediately sent to Altenstadt in Germany where the German parachute school was located. In addition, they had another problem in the army. For many years, riding a regular part of the Army officer cadet minute training. However, it was costly to keep these horses and it was determined that the cadets have to undergo parachute training instead there was not in Denmark someone who had the necessary training to educate the cadets so were a number of hunters sent to Germany to be trained for this. At the same time built a training area at the air base where the necessary facilities were available, including jumping tower and flyattrap. Thus, this task a future production targets for Jaegercorps, and it remains one of the many tasks in peacetime Jaegercorps solves.

Selection

Hunter Soldier included in the Special Forces who is one of the military special units composed entirely of volunteer personnel. Hunter Soldier is specially selected and trained to solve a series of challenging and interesting assignments in both peace and war. Special Forces are trained, organized and equipped to perform reconnaissance and combat missions behind enemy lines and can operate on land, at sea and in the air. Jaegercorps can at very short notice be deployed in operations where conventional forces can not be used in both national and international level. The patrol man in Jaegercorps service as commando takes place initially as a member of a patrol. On this basis exists a wealth of training, exercises, courses, other tasks and missions. All in both home and abroad. The operative hunter is daily confronted with an exciting, challenging, varied and demanding work that requires continuous physical form out of the ordinary, physical benefits and a good mood.

Patrol Course
The defense attaches great importance to international engagement, which means frequent deployment of the Army personnel. Patrol Course is just a course that Jaegercorps implement the army and give individuals the knowledge and skills that can be used as broadcast.

Assignments

A special operations forces should be able to perform military tasks in peace, crisis and war within the following general tasks: Information gathering and reporting, Active efforts Military support and Delivery Tasks.
Solving these tasks are extremely demanding, that special operations forces must be specially trained and organized and be able to use operative techniques and methods that are not normal for regular military units.
And Jaegercorps lives up to the requirements that you provide to a special operations force. Jaegercorps is able to solve all the tasks of a national framework, but can also solve tasks in the framework of an international organization like the UN or NATO.
Jaegercorps have the ability to solve tasks assigned in almost all geographical environments, although not required, that Jaegercorps be able to operate in arctic and alpine areas.
Beyond the purely operational tasks have Jaegercorps also a number of tasks associated with training. These training tasks include, for example, parachute and patrol courses for army cadets and advanced parachute courses for some of Jaeger Corps foreign partners.

Conclusion

There is a tendency to think of the Scandinavian countries as laid back, socially progressive states with armed forces that train but don't fight. Afghanistan and Iraq have belied this premise in the case of Danish special operators, who have impressed their U.S. and British counterparts. Danish special operators can trace their lineage to the vikings, Anders Lassen and the WWII resistance, but they are making a new history for themselves in the mountains of Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Global War on Terror. The Danes are very careful about security, so little information about their Counter-Terrorist teams has been released.

True. Malays are very good COIN operators. Decades of experience and difficult terrain will do that to you.
