Today is world population day. According to various studies, India is set to become the most populous country overtaking China within the next decade.

A population control bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in July 2019 by Rakesh Sinha to incentivize a 2 child policy. It included tax breaks, preferences in govt jobs, education and healthcare benefits.

Given the steady rise in population and shrinking resources do we need a population control bill?

This will not be some forced sterilization program like emergency, or a forced abortion program like China's one child policy.

No, it is only a few communities whose populations have too many kids. Most of the Indian states already don't have huge TFRs, some are even below 2.1, which is replacement rate. A law like this, depending on the consequences, can end up hurting Hindus only.

The only way this works is if it specifically targets those communities which have too many kids, or is selectively enforced on those people. Both methods are highly unlikely in the foreseeable future.

A specifically community targetted law will not be possible. I think India as a whole is 2.6-2.7. We need to reach 2.1. We need this law. Some Hindus will also get affected but if it is strictly enforced the targetted communities will be affected more.
