MELBOURNE: A former right-wing leader in Australia has ignited a controversy by openly declaring that she would not sell her property to Asians who lived overseas, and to Muslims who she believes are not "compatible with our culture".

The former leader of Australia's One Nation party, that rode on an anti-immigration sentiment, Pauline Hanson has put her house on sale, and she says Asians and Muslims need not bother putting in any offers. Hanson had put up for sale her million-dollar property in Coleyville, southwest of Brisbane and announced she was moving to Britain earlier this year.

Hanson, whose fame stems from her hardline anti-immigration views when she entered parliament in 1996, told a radio channel that she would not allow certain members of the Australian community to purchase the property. Asked if she would be prepared to sell the property to a Muslim, she said she would not.

"Because I don't believe that they are compatible with our way of life, our culture," she said, when asked why.
Asked if Asians were welcome to express interest in the property, Hanson said she would not sell the home to an Asian who lived overseas. But she had no problem with selling the property to "an Australian who is of Asian background". "No problems whatsoever," she said.

Her comments created a furore, with an official saying that she would be going against law if she refused to sell to buyers on grounds of their race or religion.

There are many such incidents happening in Australia. Unfortunately they think they are more isolated then rest of the world. I am confident the time will change soon and they will taste their own medicine when communities from less privileged back grounds will start influencing their politics. At present there are two faces of Australia one is very moderate and inviting but at the mercy of random pseudo reformists those who regularly interacts with rest of the world to promote Australia and white Islamophobic Australians at the same time. Another face is of very own possessive illegal owners of the land endorsing superfluous Australian way of life invented after comprehensive bullying and racial discrimination of those who were living here before them and those who came here after them, fairly supported by rotten media..

They haven't even learnt form their neighbouring country New Zealand how they have preserved and promoted the Mauri culture in their every day life and have given the deserved respect to natives and migrants till today.

this is a desperate attempt by this lady to remain in the news after the electorate has rejected her and her policies.

What a bigoted woman! This will add more fuel to the ongoing racist attacks and many innocent Indians will suffer unnecessarily. What I do not get is why is she still free after this speech. Is there no law in Australia to tackle hate speeches like this?

She can sell to anyone she wants. But no need to stick out a banner and say i will not give to Muslims and Asians.. Kind of reminds me of the British thing "dogs and Indians not allowed". She could have politely refused if someone who she didnt want to sell to came along. By doing this, she was just publicizing her racist thoughts which have been rejected by a majority of Aussies.

i dont think she went out and declared that. she only answered to a query. if you dont want difficult answers, dont ask difficult questions.

what she said may not be politically correct but i think she still has the right to decided whom she wants to sell.

Motivated questioning. Why would a reporter ask such a question? That lady only would have arranged for such an interview.

It's funny when you see these mongrels and products of random sexual relationships try to act elitist. I am sure just the members of this board with their vast and illustrious family histories and accomplishments would be enough to drown this woman in shame.

Asians & Muslims are a huge demographic. The invasion of Australia is all in our minds now.

Australia has a long history of racism huh? Australia is perhaps the most tolerant place in the world. We have a Chinese cabinet minister, and an American Premier for the largest state. You'd be lucky to have one foreigner in any important position in India, whereas we have judges from South Africa, Asian Prosecutors, Indians in the Police force. Do you have white guys in your police force?

She is one person, her views are her own and do not reflect 'Australia'. Also, Islam is not a race.

Australia has the right to determine who comes to Australia, and who does not, in the best interests of Australia. And only Australians get to decide that, not foreigners. We would never dream of telling India to let more Pakistanis come into their country, and if you refused say you were racist.

We have an Italian who became the president, the chinese cabinet minister is a token for your biggest trading partner. I am not painting Australians with the same brush, but there is no denying what happened to the aborigines, much of this may have been done by the "older" generation, hopefully a new and different Australia will emerge.

Penny Wong is a token Cabinet Minister? And you say we have trouble with racism?

And what happened to the Aborigines? Do you really know much about it? If you like, create a thread about Aborigines, I would imagine that your beliefs about what was 'done' differ greatly from the truth of what occurred.

The Australian taxpayer has spent billions of dollars trying to fix the Aboriginal problem, but no matter how much you give any person, you cannot live their lives for them.

Offtopic, but what billions of dollars are you talking about? Those that the only Australian industry earns from students of India and China - the University Industry?

The billions of dollars we have spent on Aboriginal issues in Australia. Do a google, look it up.

As for Australia having only one industry, being foreign education, that is not correct. The provision of educational services to the peoples of the world, not just India and China, but many others, is an important industry. But it is not the only industry, by a long way. The export of coal and iron ore are bigger, and education is a diverse sector, ranging from people just learning English or getting a medical degree.
