Why Zaid Hamid is a success success in Pakistani Society?

The religious beliefs (related to Islam) mentioned below are not necessarily writers personal religious beliefs.

Why Zaid Hamid is popular among the youth of Pakistan and what is actually deriving his success? Is he giving a different message that is unprecedented in nature or is he using a different strategy to communicate the same old conspiracy theories?

The analysis below will help us figure out the reasons why his theories are successful amongst the Pakistani population and whether if there is any difference between his propositions and those of the religious traditionalists i.e. the Maulvis. An illustration given below will demonstrate this:

Let’s take a look at the hypothetical scenarios and analyse these examples:

Imran is an elite middle class boy who, having completed his A levels from a posh private English medium school in Pakistan, now studies in a top notch university in Lahore. He regularly parties with his mates and goes to watch Indian and Hollywood movies with fervour, driving fancy cars (he has a collection, including a new Honda Civic). His parents are religiously and culturally inclined and encourage him to pay more attention towards religion and traditions. They are inwardly extremely proud of their child and fulfil all his whims and fancies. Imran, an obedient child, is forced to reconsider his lifestyle and finds he faces two choices…

In another scenario, Mariam, a girl from the same background loves to partake in night time entertainment with her friends, including eating out and watching movies, and her favourite past time is getting clothes tailored in the latest fashion, and applying an assortment of makeup. Her parents are worried about Mariam finding a suitable suitor and wish her to become more eastern in her manners and more religious. As the age for marriage approaches, Mariam is forced to reconsider her way of life. She finds she faces two choices s well…

The first choice for both these youngsters is to join a Zaid Hamid group, which is ostensibly silent on various religious aspects (such as ban on music, or wearing a headscarf) or to join the old school traditionalists such as Farhat Hashmi (in Mariam’s case), or Maulana Tariq Jameel, Israr Ahmed, or other such religious preachers. The Traditionalist path requires strict adherence to the principles of Islam such as complete and strict pardah (Hijab) for women, Music is absolutely haram (forbidden), gender segregated gatherings, prayers 5 times a day and excessive love of jihad.

Mariam considers these options carefully… she thinks about it… if she were to follow the traditional path, she would have to first of all change her dressing style. That would mean shrouding herself in a burqa and forgetting about the juicy designer wear she so loves. Secondly, she thinks, if she were to cover her face as required by these preachers, it would be useless to apply any makeup as everything would be hidden behind her headscarf and veil! What about all the compliments she always received on being the best dressed of all, and having the nicest hairdo and following the latest makeup trends? In addition she is also required to strictly pray 5 times a day and have no interactions with men- be they cousins or any other friends.

She next considers joining Zaid Hamid… hmmm…what would she have to give up? She muses over her checklist: clothes- no compromise (she doesn’t need to hide behind some veil), parties- no compromise, music- also no compromise, makeup- definitely no compromise. What is she required to do then?

She discovers much to a pleasant surprise that she just has to excessively love Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal -which most of the Pakistanis already do anyway since this has been taught to us from the day we started going to school- and to carry some beliefs in her heart – to hate India, Israel and America and hold only them responsible for the disastrous state of our country and to firmly believe that our army is sacred and that the Prophet (PBUH) has prophesised for it to eventually conquer and rule India (Ghazwa-e-hind).

Similarly for Imran, the thought of giving up fun parties at his friend’s places, supporting a beard, praying five times daily, and excluding women from his social life (even social events are segregated), and to give up listening to his favourite singer, Bryan Adams, was too much of a sacrifice…

So he too ponders over the alternative- the easier option: though this Zaid Hamid group also glorifies Jihad and propagates immense hatred against Jews, Indians and Americans, it does not ostensibly share the orthodox views of the traditionalists (such as hijab, Music ban, sex segregation).

In other words, by joining Zaid’s group both Imran and Mariam do not have to compromise on their sophisticated pleasures

Let’s take a look at some of these images which reveal to us the appeal for youth today that each of these groups carry, which will in turn reveal to us why Zaid Hamid’s group would have precedence in the mind of a youngster:

This picture of Junaid Jamshed gives a glimpse of the changes that he adapted to, having followed the footsteps of traditionalist Tariq JameeL (head of TJ).

Junaid before joining Tableeghi Jamaat

Junaid After Tableeghi Jamaat

Another picture of a cricketer (Mohammad Yousef) who went through a dramatic change in appearance after converting to Islam from Christianity…

Yousef before Islam

Yousef After Islam

Now look at these alternative images of people who adhered to Zaid Hamid’s ideologies:

A picture of Musician Ali Azmat reveals no change after he started supporting Zaid Hamid’s group…

Ali Azmat before joining Zaid Hamid

Ali Azmat after

The same goes for Fashion Designer Maria B., another major supporter of Zaid Hamid’s “cause”…

Maria Before Zaid Hamid

Maria After Zaid Hamid

These pictures give us a clear idea of the changes that a person has to make to oneself in order to adhere to either one of these groups.

Hence Imran and Mariam are much more likely to follow the latter two celebrities’ footsteps. Here’s why:

The first two images make plain that a striking and sudden change is immediately observable in a disciple of the traditional classical school, whereas no such change is detectable on the surface of the latter two. Thus it can be safely concluded that adherence to Zaid Hamid’s group is the easier option of the two, as it requires minimum of change to oneself.

The adherents are easily labelled ‘good Ummatis’ (good muslim destined for paradise), patriotic, and religious good muslims, without the efforts required by the classical religious school (such as compromising on sophisticated pleasures). Thus personal satisfaction equalling that of a classical religious follower is obtained without the same hardships of personal sacrifices.

In addition, it goes without saying that when youngsters see particular celebrities making a choice (as we also see in advertisements- that’s what brand ambassadors are for) the fans are likely to follow the same path. Thus Imran and Mariam are likely to follow Ali Azmat and Maria B. This is because their upbringing was in a non-restrictive environment and they would like to continue living the way they do- but also have the added benefits mentioned above (being called good ummatis, patriots etc.)

Below are a few images of social events or gatherings of the traditional school of thought:

Males only (Sex - Segregation)

Females only

As can be seen above, the traditional schools have strict modes of sex segregation in their gatherings and there is nothing alluring about them. Our hypothetical characters Imran and Mariam will not be impressed.

Now lets see how Zaid Hamid conducts his events:

Unprecedented in Islamic Khilafat

Here again, men and women are standing together as one group in a promotional video for an event organised by Zaid Hamid’s proponents. Here is the source http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVUfzkL9h4c

http://aacounterterror.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/candle-light.jpg?w=604&h=401
Lighting Candles

This picture depicts Zaid Hamid standing amongst his supporters who have lighted candles for hope – a traditional Jewish and pagan culture-one that was never recognised by any khilafat (A Muslim totalitarian rule) which Zaid Hamid may follow (the Caliphs never observed such a ceremony involving lighting candles nor did they ever direct others to it). Nevertheless it is an appealing activity which is used as a gimmick to attract fan following. Traditional religious sects explicitly disapprove these tactics to entice the public their way.

This is also in contradiction with Zaid’s mission statement on his website where he claims: “Restore a sense of honor and dignity in the nation by reintroducing our people to their glorious Islamic heritage and pristine cultural and moral values”.

Not only this, Zaid further resorts to use of music (also forbidden under Islam) to publicize his cause. The most common back drop of music he uses for his promotional videos is the dramatic theme of The Island Soundtrack My Name Is Lincoln. This is a powerful piece of music which has the effect of making the young generation very emotionally excited.

Please refer to the short promotional and propaganda video. This Video is being widely used by Zaid Hamid to attract audience.

Just feel the power of Music in the Video Below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sttDCTp2Mbw

You may have noticed that in general music is capable of touching the human soul in a way in which simple words can not. Music is used in restaurants to give a relaxed environment, in weddings to create a happy and exciting atmosphere, in sad scenes in a movie to depict sadness. Compare this music to the naats without the aid of instruments (used for tableeghi jamaat’s marketing purpose) which Junaid Jamshed has produced after becoming an orthodox Muslim, and you realise that the former is much more powerful in invoking the requisite emotions in it’s audience.

Again Unprecedented in Islamic khilafat.

Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVUfzkL9h4c

This picture in particular, I think, epitomises the essence of Zaid Hamid’s strategies to allure the youth towards him. It is clearly visible to the reader that men and women are holding hands without any qualms about the inappropriateness of this according to religion. What is so ironic about this situation is that Zaid Hamid’s ideology is based on (so called) Islamic precepts. Yet he resorts to propagate his ideologies by going against the very basic principles of Islam. Is this not a serpentine attempt to reduce religion to mere whims and fancies?

These pictures clearly illustrate that there is no requirement of emotional self-control as that required in the traditional Islamic sects.

However, this does not mean that Zaid Hamid discourages Hijab, sex segregation etc. He is in fact purposely silent on religious topics such as those of music and pardah. He does not tell us whether music is forbidden or not, neither does he hint at whether it will be allowed or not in the Caliphate society which will rule after his prophecy of the Pakistan’s Army’s victory over India comes true.

Instead, he is more focused on Jihad as his core ideology. This is why the Ghazwa-e-Hind ideology is asserted by him repeatedly even though this so called prophecy is not mentioned in any of the 6 recognised books of hadiths that Muslims follow today. While he is asserting this vague unauthenticated hadis so assertively, why does he not also assert other ahadis in the same manner?- Those which forbid all the worldly pleasures on muslims such as listening to music, men and women freely intermingling in gatherings, and following the proper dress code for muslims.

The truth is that the common interest of the traditional religious sects of Pakistan and Zaid Hamid’s sect i.e. the hatred for Jews, Americans and Indians and glorification of their twisted versions of Jihad, is so important and over-powering that it overshadows and hence blinds them to other aspects of religion. The traditional sects therefore accept Zaid’s version as something valid and recognisable (even if temporarily and tactically), so long as the common purpose is served.

His followers are under the false impression that they are the best nation and the most righteous of people.

To summarize this at the end, Imran after following Zaid Hamid, can call himself both, an Ummati and a true Pakistani. Thus Zaid Hamid is fulfilling both his religious and nationalist requirements as compared to the traditionalists who are more focused on curbing sophisticated pleasures.

After following Zaid Hamid, Both Mariam and Imran can still:

* Listen to music

* Watch Amir khan’s movie ‘3-Idiots’ or Sharukh Khan’s ‘Kabhi khushi kabhi gham’

* Fantasize about Megan Fox, Kareena Kapoor or Jonny Depp

* Imran can keep a French beard, goatee style, or remain as clean shaved

* Mariam can still wear tight Jeans

All they have to do is to hate Jews, glorify past Islamic imperialist rulers, avoid criticizing Pakistan army, legitimize all the army’s actions in supporting militants such as Mullah Omer or Hekmatyar and believe in Ghazw e Hind (Prophesised capture of India by Pakistan army).

This is a clever strategy that Zaid Hamid is adopting here which is to deliberately stay silent on issues like hijab and simultaneously preach the same jihad and khilafat doctrine that is common among militant organizations such as Lashkar e Taiba

Keeping all these facts in mind, it can be said with surety that Zaid Hamid would never propagate the restrictive commandments of traditionalist Islam, because the day he sets restrictions on these worldly pleasures, his adherent ratings would take a plunge. This is because the elite and the upper middle class youth of Pakistan would never easily sacrifice their comfort and pleasure.

Despite all this, however, there are still many unanswered questions left.

Presuming Zaid Hamid’s assertions that we will eventually have a caliphate society and be ruled by a caliph under Shariah law is true:

1. What about the role of women in society? Will we live in a patriarchal society? If yes, then will Maria B. be able to continue making the western line of clothing which she so loves to design and market or will she then design hijabs only?

2. Will women be forced to wear a burqa like in Saudi Arabia (Zaid Hamid’s favourite country)

3. Will non-muslims be able to proselytize their religion like Muslims do today? (Note that no Muslim country allows this today)

4. Will there be complete freedom of speech? Or would the rules be like those of Saudi Arabia or China where people are jailed for voicing their opinions against the government policy?

If I were the reader of this article, I would have raised a question to the author:

The question is that why do you expect Zaid Hamid to talk about hijab, music and such other Islamic directives when that is not his job in the first place? Zaid Hamid can not be criticised for the lack of these assertions since he describes his job as that of a Security Analyst.

The answer to this is given in the questions raised below:

One might ask oneself, that if he really is a security analyst alone, then why does he talk about religious prophecies coming true?

If he really is just a Security Analyst, why does he talk about the history of banking and claiming that US Federal Reserve is actually a private institution?

If he really is a Security Analyst then why does he advocate the enforcement of Shariah Law and Khilafat?

if he really is a mere Security Analyst and nothing more, why does he suddenly assume the role of a historian and claim to know the true history such as the truth of the Chanakya Ideology, the truth of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal- hailing the latter two as Islamic warriors?

And lastly, what about his mission statement of “restoring Islamic culture and pristine values and promoting legal and constitutional reforms to reflect the true spirit of the Quran and Sunnah”

Is this a job of a “Security Analyst?”

Sexy Islamism |ˈseksē ˈisləˌmizəm; ˈiz-| |ˈseksē ˈɪsləˈmɪzəm| |ˈseksē ˈɪzləˈmɪzəm| noun

* Like conventional Islamism, Sexy Islamism is a political ideology that holds that Islam is not only a religion but also a political and economic system. In addition to this, Sexy Islamism is also a genre of rock music and a fashion aesthetic.
* Sexy Islamism is noted for its use of Fashion and Pop Icons (such as Ali Azmat and Maria B.) to propagate its Islamist message. A prephiery of minor fashionistas and MTV VJs are increasingly become Sexy Islamists.
* According to leading Sexy Islamism theorist Anas Abbas, Syed Zaid Zaman Hamid is a leading pioneer of Sexy Islamism.

Wake Up Pakistan?

The following is a report from the LUMS Daily Student by Mohammad Taimur Mustafa.

Walking into A-12 on the night of 3rd Feb, an air of general confusion greeted me. The turnout was thin initially and all those present had little idea of what was about to happen. Not to be cynical or anything, but I really doubt that anyone had turned up with real passion or interest. Common reasons might have included boredom, keeping company, seeing Maria B., taking photographs, covering for the daily student; you get the picture. As I took my seat, a conversation between two sophomore girls seated behind me caught my attention and enlightened me (to some extent) as to the purpose of this event.

A: “Is she going to talk about fashion?”

B: “No, something to do with motivation.”

A: “Motivation for fashion?” which was followed by shrugs and giggles.

So this was how the LUMS students welcomed the team of ‘Wake Up Pakistan’, a movement that many had never even heard of.

10 minutes past the scheduled time, Maria B. gave a disappointed look to the twos and threes of students splattered over the embarrassingly empty auditorium. She began her speech enthusiastically; first lauding the LUMS students, calling them the brightest minds and real future of Pakistan and then finally coming to the point: what ‘Wake Up Pakistan’? is – something that up until this point was little more than a vague notion.

The whole event can easily be broken up into two parts. The offensive and the defensive. The offensive was with Maria B. explaining how times in Pakistan have reached the ultimate low and instead of running away from all the problems, it is our responsibility as the educated and privileged class to bring Pakistan back to its feet. Her words were reiterated by her colleagues. There was much passion and determination in their voices, but unfortunately not much of a plan. Their passion was appreciated and even admired by the LUMS audience. Yet their lack of a practical plan that could be implemented was sensed by everyone.

This was the sort of moment in which I could proudly vouch that no LUMS student is naïve enough to get caught up in the heat of the moment for a plan with no sturdy guidelines. This skepticism, which was evident on every face, was mistaken by the team as our lack of enthusiasm. At times, I even thought that they were unimpressed.

Then came a turn in the event. A member of their team, while giving a passionate speech, mentioned that his movement would be based on two things. One being belief in the oneness of God and the other being idealization of the Prophet (PBUH). Within seconds, hands shot up and when they went unheeded, a student – clearly hurt by this new revelation – exclaimed that the event was supposed to be for Pakistanis and not Muslims, in which case she had no business here. Saying this, she walked out of the auditorium.

The ball was clearly in our court, one that consisted of a pretty full auditorium by now. The uninterested looking students started appearing fierce, and this ferocity was reflected in the tension on Maria B. and her colleagues’ faces. The rest of the event was a chaos. Let’s just say that LUMS gave them a real hard time.

Question after question shred their presentation to its crucial defects. The practicality of their plans, the lack of an ideology for their movement, the future of their actions, all were brought into question. By the end of it, some hands had to be ignored simply because their team was tired of answering mind-racking questions. Call it my impertinency, but I actually thought they were scared of delving so deep into the movement, which seemed deeper than they had ever been before.

The most satisfying answer that they were able to give was that this was just the awareness stage. Further plans will be seen and dealt with later, which brought them to the end of this session. An event on 14thFebruary this year will apparently answer all latent queries. Despite all this, the crowd was showing actual interest by the end of the event and most people walked out amidst intense discussions with tickets in their hands. I caught sight of the girl who had previously walked out being pacified by the ‘Wake Up Pakistan’ team. So I guess at the end of the day, even cynics and pessimists would feel a trickle of hope lurking around the corner. Who are we to judge? This could be the beginning of something amazing. And for our country’s sake, let’s hope it is.

This foundation appears very weak and shallow. Surprising that Pakistanis can swallow such nonsense!

These people (following Zaid Hamid's "sexy Islam") are digging their own grave. What is left unsaid will surely come to haunt them.

the story runs much deeper, as was reflected in another article based on how the gang of prominent three zaid hamid, shireen mazari, and ahmed querashi (there are certainly more names there) have been used to propagate the theme the pak army wants their country people to listen to, with the aim of paralyzing the democratic setup, which then either be made to do the business by way of strings in the hands of pak army, which is happening as of today or by proving their incompetence and create an atmosphere where the average pakistani feels there is no better alternative to military rule, which is what the eventual aim looks like, but this will take sometime since the economic turmoil for pakistan is still not over, a more apt time will come in another two years time period.

apart from singing the notes given by the pak army, zaid hamid is giving a discourse to people who have no real hope in future, and when such disillusionment happens with the current governance setup or with the government of the day then the void created can easily be fulfilled by anyone who sings what people want to listen to, much like what obama did, or what our political parties sitting in the opposition benches do.

the difference, zaid hamid is high on rhetoric, without any firm plans in place on how to go about implementing what he propagates and the people have not tested the waters with him and wont get a chance to know about his real competence levels till the time he is put to test in the hot seat and from the look of things that wont happen anytime soon nor does he look interested in taking the responsibility, so he can certainly bask in glory by giving false hopes to his fan followers the poor, the middle class and the affluent class, who in most cases are no where as well educated like the people from LUMS who dare ask the uncomfortable questions, so majority jumps in the bandwagon and fall in line.

wait till the time the pak army takes over and he will then start singing absolutely different tunes of how very competent people are molding a very bright future for pakistan, the appeal of “wake up pakistan” would then be much more since in rhetoric the deliverables will be there for everyone to see and intoxicated in having seen the illusionary deliverables the average pakistani will start chest thumping, just to be disappointed another day in future just like what happened during the latter stage of mush rule or as is happening presently.

problem is elsewhere, and certainly not a certain zaid hamid or a shireen mazari or a ahmed qureshi as has and is be being told off late. the real problem is pak army who believe in a police state and not in democracy, which has made sure no competent institution other than the military establishment has a firm foundation which if allowed could challenge their thug practices. they have fed their people propaganda for long who today have lost the ability to question the very basic questions like who, why, what and when asked the same old rhetoric gets played which they have listened for generations now and convinced that what is being said is the truth they move ahead as are being guided, earlier it was much easier since ptv was the only source of information but now with numerous private tv channels propping up and easy access to internet they have had to do a make over and present a more contemporary, user friendly face that one sees in the likes of zaid hamid’s.

if looked from an indian perspective, pak army is not that bad an enemy to have after all, they are doing just what we would like them to do and that is keep giving the average person on the street false hope of a better tomorrow, which might happen, might not happen but day after tomorrow is again certainly going to be dark much like it is today.

^^ Ritesh what you said makes sense. It can only work in an insecure society like pakistan where anything can be sold in the name of hatred for India. The foundations for the clown's claims are really shallow and any half intelligent gathering can kick his arse based on facts.

Unfortunately most Pakistanis just can't differentiate fact from fiction.

To my understanding, Zaid Hamid is not a success, he's just popular among a few sections of 'society'. The civil society in Pakistan does not take him seriously. So it's often just the uneducated, illtrained that form his audience base. If he was a 'success' he'd be leading an organization like the JuD, or be running for some office.

I find Zaid Hamid to be very unique. Most demagogues generally sustain themselves on the backs of the uber conservative older generation and frustrated simpletons from the lower socioeconomic strata who defend archaic beliefs. Zaid Hamid however isn't interested in this demographic, he actively seeks to capture the hearts and minds of the educated youth at home and abroad. His movement is entirely centered around the indoctrination of young upwardly mobile educated Pakistanis who will form the future middle class of Pakistan. He reaches his target audience by enlisting pop icons who serve as his emissaries and by making his following seem highly inclusive. As the blog rightly points out, he conveniently overlooks all the unappealing conservative practices of Islam which in turn is highly appealing to even the most avant-grade youngsters from the upper middle class, including women. He also focuses solely on popular forms of electronic media (TV, youtube, internet forums, facebook until recently etc.) which he uses to tell the frustrated Pakistani youth exactly what they want to hear: that all of Pakistan's ills which have robbed them of a bright optimistic future is on account of Hindus, Jews and Zionists. His constant references to glorious battles, his obsession with the military and his god given ability to covertly exploit the sense of humiliation gives him special traction with young Pakistani men, including the ones eligible to join the Pak military*. On the same note his mastery of pseudo-intellectualism gives him an advantage when it comes to academically oriented impressionable young college students who have as yet to develop their critical thinking skills. Through this seemingly erudite delivery system he proliferates nonsensical historical revisionism, outdated revanchist ideals, support of violence and Jihad, bizarre ideas of genetic superiority and the dehumanization of Hindus and Jews.

As of now, it seems like he is making excellent headway. He seems to have a lot of support in the tier 2 universities, and even if the event at LUMS went as badly as the student journalist from Singh's post makes it out to be, just the fact that they're knocking on the doors of an institution like LUMS is pretty alarming. Only time will tell if Hamid is able to penetrate this last bastion of enlightened moderation; so far his track record has been great.

*I'm going to quote again an interesting observation noted by Seymour Hersch in his New Yorker piece:
Hersch said:
Officials and journalists said that soldiers and middle-level officers were increasingly attracted to the preaching of Zaid Hamid, who joined the mujahideen and fought for nine years in Afghanistan. On CDs and on television, Hamid exhorts soldiers to think of themselves as Muslims first and Pakistanis second. He claims that terrorist attacks in Mumbai last year were staged by India and Western Zionists, aided by the Mossad. Another proselytizer, Dr. Israr Ahmed, writes a column in the Urdu press in which he depicts the Holocaust as “divine punishment,” and advocates the extermination of the Jews. He, too, is said to be popular with the officer corps.

My 2 cents.

In Pakistan
1. its the elitist who are the political class and hold sway over large sections of lower middle class, and poor folks.
2. its the islamists who hold sway over the conservative elements
3. its the army whose support base are the educated, liberal and middle class pakistanis.

The movements for restoration of Judges, and the democracy movement had galvanized large sections of Pakistani society and forced teh Army to go on the backfoot. Their supporters were either disillusioned or overwhelmed by the unexpected welcome to BB, NS etc.

Zaid Hamid imho is an effort by the PA to not only reach but also expand their support base. This will help them grab power in the future.

If you can support your assertion with few references of past then it will help readers to understand more into this. Not suggesting but requesting.

Zaid Hamid, Webster Tarpley, Hamid Gul etc strive for media attention and hence give out baseless claims of their versions of truth. The only way to stop these chatter-boxes is by just not watching them. I have no doubt that we Indians are also contributing in increasing his revenue count. We keep on following their videos on youtube and raise their view count, start topics like these to give him more attention only works in the favor of increasing his popularity.

Most Pakistanis know that this guy is just plain pure refined CRAZY. So, let us not contribute raising his popularity. It just irritates me to the core that this guy gets even a discussion space in this forum.

If you can support your assertion with few references of past then it will help readers to understand more into this. Not suggesting but requesting.
Regards.
cannot give specific references at the moment.

However to give you a few pointers,

Elitists are political class - Zardari, Bhutto, Sharif, Gilani etc.
Islamists hold sway over conservative - check out those who are supporting taliban, lal masjid guys etc.
Army - check out the background of those who adored Mushy
Look up news reports of Anti-Musharraf agitation era to see Pak society galvanized against Mushy.
Regarding Zaid Hamid, ever heard him criticise the PA ?

Unfortunately Zaid Hamid Phenomenon is sweeping all over Pak; his popularity is soaring and it has forced the columnists to forego their once in a week chance of bashing Zardar,i to address Conspiracy theorists like him.

Good that Indians are watching him and counting their blessings for being Indians.

He is not doing all this for any services, what people do not understand is that it is his business. If this war on terror did not started he did not had becomes so popular and hence not much money.

Actually Singh ji the point you made about support of military regime to religious radical ideology never clicked in my mind for ZM. And when i read your post the whole history came in front of me like a 3D movie. I think we have got the reason of why People like ZH can still spark any where in Pakistan. However i think it is a short sightedness by part of policy makers in Pakistan cause being an Indian i would always like them to be less progressive as a society and stagnant in time. Furthermore they are gambling on religion as a uniting force; which is a very vulnerable force for sure and explains that they are not learning from past.

It has been proven time and again that it is not the religion, history, language, ethnicity, culture that is the binding ties. Partition of India and later that of Pakistan, and the various insurgencies have proved this.

So what binds people ?
Indians had a strong Belief in a particular ideology(democracy, secularism etc). The spectacular results upon successful implementation of ideology has reinforced our beliefs in this ideology. This has helped established bonds of "nationalism" in India even though people in different corners of India have different language, religion, culture, ethnicity etc. In India you have differing views on all topics under the sun, but the belief in the national ideals ensure the bond ensues.

Pakistanis are still searching for their national identity. Every Pakistani has a different definition of Pakistan, and those who don't adhere to it are traitors. Pakistan's identity changes from party to party, from region to region, class to class, ethnicity to ethnicity.

Army is trying to forge a particular Pakistani identity, which is anti-India, Islamic, pride in Islamic culture, abhorrence of all that is Indian and progressive. However the inherent contadictions in this very identity can possibly lead to great cleavages in Pak society.

I agree with Yusuf .He basically gives hope to Pakistanis. But unfortunately he is creating false hope
and a false sense of "strength " when he says that Pakistan will defeat India in 2012.

Secondly his Ghazwa e Hind theory has been based on interpretation of Religious texts. So that makes it
simple for him to sell his ideas.

you see there is a proverb in Hindi which says that " a drowning man will clutch to a straw for support."

The yususf kazaab issue is picking up heat against prophet zahid hamid and it is going to be more and more difficult for him to pacify the rabid mullas of pakis, even though he is anti-india and claims to be islamic. It is really scary to see how religion poison has been instilled in pakistani populations through generations and generations that we see these petty issues becoming very very close to their islamic ideology.

The bigger problem is that pakistanis are going to be increasingly bigotic in future - they will die for their ideology, and will fight for their ideology without applying any self consciousness and reasoning. The wahabi, sunni, sahabee, prophet kazaab groups - all are very much die hard fans of their own ideology, and have common denominator as hatred towards India.

As someone said above, if these jihadee groups do not get chance to kill kufr they will turn inwards and kills "less islamic" munaifqs among themselves - that is what they have been taught by each ideology.

Zaid Hamid questioned by Aalmi Majlis Tahaffuz Khatm-e-Nubuwwat in Islamic University
A question raised at Zamin Zaman Hamid's beliefs and his association with yusuf kazab by the spokes person of Aalmi Majlis Tahaffuz Khatm-e-Nubuwwat. Who are Aalmi Majlis Tahaffuz Khatm-e-Nubuwwat? http://www.khatm-e-nubuwwat... V...
