Why I believe that India will never be a superpower. The most important thing that determines a superpower is proficiency in Technology and science. I do not believe that India has this.

As evidence

This is the most world famous programming contest in the world

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Collegiate_Programming_Contest#Winners

In the past 11 years

Russia has won this contest 6 times
China has won this contest 3 times
Poland has won this contest 2 times

Now lets move on to mathematics

http://www.imo-official.org/year_country_r.aspx?year=2010&column=total&order=desc
China = 1st place
Russia = 2nd place
India = 36nd place

Now lets move on to Physics

China = 1st place
India = 3rd place

Nanotechnology Papers by country, India does not even show up

Scientific output by country, India has remained mostly flat

You forget biggest fact that Indians Rule Silicon valley . If we Indians donot have any brain and potential then its fluke that 30 % of entrepreneurs there are Indians. Also you forget the fact that It was India which had oldest and biggest University in world.

I am sure You can Google the Word " NALANDA UNIVERSITY " the way you googled this article.

I WILL SAY YOU ONE THING IF SO WITHOUT ZERO HOW MANY OF THE SCIENTIFIC INVENTION HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WHICH CAME FROM INDIA ...
"We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made". Albert Einstein

he current international classification of lesser, middle, greater, and super powers is to limited. I fall into the camp that adds a new catagory- hyper power. This divides the world in to 5 categories that are more objectively compared with one another.

The term Hyperpower was coined in France.
To Paris, U.S. Looks Like a 'Hyperpower' - International Herald Tribune

Placing the US into the Hyper Power catagory means the term Superpower can be more readily ascribed to several factions who quite frankly by themselves have more power than any nation in history before 1945.

Hyperpower
Global conventional ground force projection, hegemonic power in at least 1 of these 5 broad areas: Cultural-Economic/Industrial-Energy-Military-Political, and all super power categories.

USA*Dominant in 4 hegemonic areas: Cultural, Economic/Industry, Military, and Political.

Superpower(having all of the following)

1 trillion USD economy (actual) not PPP
100,000,000 population base or greater.
Credible space program.
Blue water capable navy.
Nuclear weapons.
P5 seat on the UN Security Council.
Modern air force and aerospace industry.

Russia Has near hegemonic energy influence over Europe.
China Rapidly becoming an non-military industrial hegemon.
India
EU
India and the EU are emerging/potential Superpowers with potential hegemonic traits like the Euro.

Great Powers (most of the above list- within 1-2 categories)

England (-Population)* Eventually faces loss of P5 seat to EU if the EU federalizes. -1
France (-Population)*Eventually faces loss of P5 seat to EU if the EU federalizes. -1
Germany (Nukes, P5 Seat) -2
Japan (Nukes, P5 Seat) -2
India (P5 seat)* India is a P5 contender. -2
Brazil (Nukes, P5 Seat)* Brazil is a P5 contender. -2

Middle Powers (missing 3-6)
South Korea (Nukes, P5 Seat, Population) -3
Pakistan (Blue Water Navy, Economy, P5 Seat) -3
Iran (Nukes, Blue Water Navy, Population, Economy, P5 Seat)-4
Israel (Blue Water Navy, Population, Economy, -P5 Seat) -4
Mexico (Space program, Aerospace Industry, Nukes, Blue Water Navy, P5 seat) -5
Taiwan (Nukes, P5 Seat, Population, Space program, Economy) -5
Ukraine (Nukes, Population, P5 Seat, Blue Water Navy, Economy) -5
Egypt (Nukes, Population, P5 Seat, Blue Water Navy, Economy, Space program) -6
Turkey (Nukes, Blue Water Navy, Population, Economy, P5 seat, Space program) -6

Lesser Powers (are missing 7 or more of the categories)

South Africa *destroyed existing nuclear weapons.

Categories

Blue Water Capable Navy, having a naval force capable of acting in a decisive manner far from the nations own shores (1000Km plus) with frigate sized or larger warships.

Credible Space Program, having launched at least one sophisticated commercial, scientific, or military satellite and having a dedicated space agency.

Global Ground Force Projection, being able to sustain 1/4 million military personnel (collective) outside the nations border for a significant period of time measured in years.

Hegemonic Power, being the single most import actor in a given area, one that the rest of the world generally conforms to (soft power) or fears/aligns with (hard power).

Modern Air force and Aerospace Industry, having at least 4th generation fighters and the ability to produce at least some sort of jet powered or rotary winged aircraft.

Nuclear Weapons, having a credible deterrent force of weaponized nuclear devices and delivery systems.

Trillion Dollar Economy, having a real GDP of at least 1 trillion US dollars, not measured in PPP. This is likely to change to the Euro at some point as that currency continues its ascendant rise.

P5 Seat, having a seat on the permanent UN Security Council.

Notes

Nations are not judged by areas where they still lag behind (down points) but by up points. Thus things like access to health care, literacy, homelessness etc are not factors in the rankings. Only those things that can be objectively compared to other states and that are in or can be considered to be in direct competition to other states are considered.

And who allots this SUPERPOWER status? :emot0:

I don't care if any country recognize India as superpower or not. All India need is internal/external security, decent per capita income & healthy society. I feel pity for screwed up Sam, over-ambitious Chinamen & collapsed soviets.....

These large projects have many people, Chinese, Russians, Iranians, Mexicans etc..... does this mean that all of them are going to be superpowers?

And where are these Indians educated? Most of them are educated in the United States.

Poor performance in world competition only shows that Indians have a poor education system, and without good education system India will never be able to run with the wolves USA+Russia+China

Nobody agrees that UK and France are superpower. The only two superpowers that have existed are Russia and the USA, China is not yet a superpower power yet.

What do China, USA, Russia all have in common? They all rank highly in every international competition.

But look at these contests during 1970-1980

USA won FIRST PLACE every year in mathematics and physics. But now you can see a gradual shift to China winning FIRST PLACE in everything

by definition
superpower :A superpower is a state with a leading position in the international system and the ability to influence events and its own interests and project power on a worldwide scale to protect those interests; it is traditionally considered to be one step higher than a great power

see during the cold war period
us&russia are treated as superpower
after cold war After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 the world turned to be unipolar ...that is SOLE US
there has been some recent speculation that the United States is declining in relative power as the rest of the world rises to match its levels of economic and technological development. Citing economic hardships, Cold War allies becoming less dependent on the United States, a declining dollar, and the rise of other great powers around the world, some experts have suggested the possibility of the United States losing its superpower status in the distant future or even at the present

Due to their large markets, growing military , and economic influence in international affairs, the Federative Republic of Brazil, the People's Republic of China, the European Union, the Republic of India and the Russian Federation are among the powers which are most often cited as having the ability to influence future world politics and reach the status of superpower in the 21st century

According to Wikipedia the only 3 superpowers in history are United Kingdom (when it controlled India, Australia and Canada), United States and Soviet Union during the cold war.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superpower

It was a term first applied in 1944 to the United States, the Soviet Union, and the British Empire. Following World War II, as the British Empire transformed itself into the Commonwealth and its territories became independent, the Soviet Union and the United States generally came to be regarded as the only two superpowers, and confronted each other in the Cold War.

After the Cold War, the most common belief held is that only the United States fulfilled the criteria to be considered a superpower,[2] although it is a matter of debate whether it is a hegemon or if it is a besieged global power.[3] Brazil, China,[4] the European Union, India, and Russia[5][6] are also thought to have the potential of achieving superpower status within the 21st century.[7]

so by this u r ready to accept that india has ability to become a super power

any way.. read the wiki page full u can know that stating that today's complex global marketplace and the rising interdependency between the world's nations has made the concept of a superpower an idea of the past and that the world is now multipolar

see let india becoming super power or not is a differet thing ,the way u defining a super power is defintely wrong

China is not a superpower yet, but if you look at their results in international competitions they have the brainpower to challenge Russia and the USA.

Can we all agree that Brainpower is the most important for a superpower, but right now it looks like India is in last place out of all the BRIC countries. The reason why I don't believe India can ever overtake Brazil/Russia/China is solely because of this.

since
Brain power = Better military technology
Brain power = Better products and innovation = Country becomes wealthy by selling technology

Biggest sign of Indian potential to become a superpower is Silentscope himself . Where from the hell he got an Idea about India being or not being a superpower.
All the way from Ireland . From Inner core of his heart he also know that we are going to be there and those looters and dacoits will have to return whatever they have looted from us for 300 years.
Its fear of them thats forcing them to believe that India should not be a superpower. How can an Imperialist accept a country to become superpower which was once ruled by them.

how many participants will be there in a competition may be 1000...or so the whole nations will only depend on these 1000 people ...NO
can u say all students of a particular country have same IQ/brainpower -no

see now India ranked second in global manufacturing competence "Žnext to china
