When are Mumbai Cops going to get real guns

I read in a recent New York Times report that nothing or very little has changed in Mumbai since 26/11.

When are the Cops in Mumbai and other major cities going to get some new semi-automatic rifle and side-arms instead of those WW2 era bolt action rifles.

Is India so screwed up that they cant buy a bunch of modern handguns and rifles for its policeman. Its been more than 6 months now since 26/11.

WTF is it going to take to get these incompetent morons to upgrade the police equipment.

Is it an issue of money or simply incompetence.

Policemen are not supposed to carry around assault rifles for their daily duties. Those bolt-action rifles are only a deterrent.

having had to pay bribes to the police while we were on hoilday at mount abu,i would feel even more scared if they carried proper guns.when you place so much power in the hands of a few, you first need accountability when things go wrong. the policeforce needs a more urgent review of how to gain trust of the public.where we come from near surat, the locals are more scared of the police then they are of criminals.this cant be right can it.
knee jerk reactions often cause more problems in the long run.reform the police first before giving them any weapons.
