Throughout time we have seen military change gradually from sticks and stones to Nuclear warfare.

A country who was the most innovative seems to gain upper hand in war.

Let me list some of the prominent turns in technology military has taken over the years.

Naval Warfare in Napoleon Era

Tanks and propeller planes in ww1

Aircraft carriers, submarine and
machine guns in ww1

Nuclear weapons, helicopter cluster bombs, chemical weapons in cold war era

Cyber Warfare and intel gathering in the modern era

So what's the next big thing in war any idea?

There used to be three dimensions of warfare, Now its five ..

1. LAND
2. SEA
3. AIR
-----
4. CYBER
5. SPACE

It would be simple to understand about advances in various dimensions ..

I believe we should pursue our own electromagnetic rail guns. In future we can deploy them as fixed defence guns on shores of big cities. Will save money and stay relevant for long time with out regular upgrades. Even useful in our aircraft carriers.

The next big innovations:
  • Globalization/World order. The real reason there hasn't been a WW3 is not because there are nukes, but because each major power has globalized and build a world-order centric to itself. Inequity, loss, and trade-wars impact countries more substantially than military conflict.
  • Rail-gun. For now it's on ships powered by nuclear reactors, but soon they could be miniaturized enough that field-artillery with 4-5X the range and projectile velocity of conventional arty could become the next "cannon." India must invest in rail-guns, even if we have to eat grass for it.
  • Cyber-warfare: yuo haxxor enemies moniez from der bankz looool
  • Information warfare: Any country worth its salt which wants to be influential in the world stage must have substantial information warfare capability. This includes not just international news channels that people in other countries watch, but a channel with presence everywhere, which has the ability to influence. Presstitution must also substantially come down. Modi is doing the right thing pounding RandiTV with the CBI. They broke the law, and the message being sent is that the press is not above the law. What we need next is a well-written anti-libel law which inflicts heavy monetary penalties on news organizations for fake news or baseless slander.

Do these things fire projectiles at greater velocities than a traditional cannon and how efficient are they?
