1200 India time, June 16 2016: Due to overcrowding at Patna's Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Airport, air traffic control directs planes to wait in a circular holding pattern above the airport. A Muslim pilot, distraught over his brother's death at the hands of a drunken Hindu mob, dives out of the circular holding pattern onto a BJP election rally being held in the city below. It takes less than 30 seconds for the plane to reach its target. By the time air traffic control notices something is wrong and alerts the Sukhois providing VIP security, it is too late; a missile splashes the 747's left wing but manages to only knock it slightly off course. Narendra Modi is addressing the rally. Flying debris strikes his head and causes massive brain trauma; hundreds of rally attendees are killed in addition to all the passengers on the aircraft.

1230 India time: Within 30 minutes, someone uploads a suicide note purportedly written by the pilot to Facebook. The note states a desire to kill Modi for "supporting Hindutva" and therefore "killing his brother". Smartphones spread the post across India; anti-Muslim riots break out in 30 major cities and hundreds of Muslims are killed within the first few hours. BJP members of the Lok Sabha issue a call for a "strong response" and Arun Jaitley takes the helm as the new PM. Jaitley browbeats Pranab Mukherjee to impose a state of emergency under Article 352 of the Indian Constitution. Police across India begin rounding up Indian Muslims under the pretext of "preserving public safety". Jaitley also orders the full mobilization of the military. Anti-terror sweeps commence in major Indian cities and Kashmir.

1530 India time: In response to the Indian military mobilization, Pakistan simultaneously 1) issues a statement disavowing responsibility while 2) giving individual corps-level commanders authority to launch tactical nuclear strikes if Indian armed forces attack Pakistan in perceived retaliation. At this moment, large explosions are reported Srinagar when police raid suspected militant safe houses; Pakistan begins shelling Indian positions in response. In the international waters of the Arabian Sea, the INS Arihant fires a torpedo at a suspected Pakistani submarine that is following it. Meanwhile, images of Muslim riot victims spread across the Islamic world. Hardline clerics issue fierce denunciations of India and the BJP in particular in the wake of what appears to be GoI indifference to anti-Muslim rioting. ISIS and Al-Qaeda tweet images and gifs of New Delhi in flames and vow to "bring jihad to India". Knife attacks are reported on Indian expatriates in Qatar. Rioting intensifies in major Indian cities and the death toll nears a thousand.

1600 India time: The President of the United States is rudely awoken and attempts to get both Arun Jaitley and Nawaz Sharif into a teleconference while in his pajamas. Unfortunately, he cannot find Sharif; it appears the Pakistani army now holds him incommunicado. An emergency session of the UNSC convenes to pass a resolution encouraging a ceasefire - during which the Chinese ambassador notes one of China's submarines has been attacked and damaged in the Arabian Sea while it was "in the vicinity of Indian naval units". China then threatens to veto any UNSC resolution which does not station UN observers on all units of the Indian and Pakistani Navies.

It is now 1630 India time: You are Arun Jaitley. Modi is still unconscious and his full recovery is unlikely. What do you do? What happens next?
