Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez dies

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has passed away at the age of 58 following a two-years-long fight against cancer and a severe respiratory infection. His untimely demise raises serious questions about the future of the oil-rich regional power.
The president of Venezuela died on Tuesday afternoon, Vice President Nicolas Maduro has announced. "It's a moment of deep pain," he said, accompanied by senior ministers.

The country's military chiefs have appeared live on state television to pledge their loyalty to Vice President Nicolas Maduro, whom Chavez had named as his preferred successor.

According to the country's constitution, head of Venezuelan Parliament Diosdado Cabello assumes the interim presidency until the elections.
One of the world's best-known socialist leaders and a staunch critic of the United States, Chavez had been battling the disease for nearly two years, undergoing four surgeries and several sessions of chemotherapy in Havana.

Despite his ailing health, Chavez was reelected in November to a fourth term. However, he was not able to attend his January 10 inauguration ceremony, which cast doubt on the succession of power in the country. Prior to his death, the Venezuelan opposition called for a new election should Chavez be unfit to take over the office.

Chavez interrupted the traditional relay among venezuelan elitists parties, which held the power several decades without been capable of to improve the people's life standard trough the oil's rent.

Chavez created in the place of traditional political structure another structure fully arisen around his personality. Through this structure he to sanction his plans with success , but now he died I have my doubts if the vice-president or another Chavez's follower will be capable to keep governance of this structure. Other hand, the venezuelan opposition, united by their common hate to Chavez policies now will try to regain the power by attacking the former vice, now turned president, Nicolaz Maduro.

I fear a civil war on Venezuela.

RIP CHavez.:salute:

Well "God" spared Hugo from seeing Venezuela collapse years from now due to plummeting oil demand from the US and fall in oil prices... "God" must love Hugo so much.

Are you sure you know what you're talking about?

Hugo depends his life on contracts with the US. Amercian dollars keep Venezuela afloat. So it's suicide to break any contract with the Amercinas even for the obnoxiously Anti-American like Hugo.

May his soul R.I.P.

It appears Sarko's plot to murder Chavez worked. Now with Mali operations winding down we can divert forces for the liberation of Caracas.

Even if Chavez lived on how can his biz model b sustainable? Petrol so much cheaper than mineral water that Columbians rushed through border to buy ; high unemployment rate though the poor may be grateful for government relief. That "socialism" doesnt work out.
