USS New York underway down the Mississippi

This morning, Oct. 13, 2009, at 7:00 AM CDT, the USS New York left New Orleans Avondale Shipyard in route to sea trials in the Gulf of Mexico and then for commissioning in a ceremony in New York City on Nov. 2.

The USS New York was built with 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center after 9-11. It is a 25,000 ton DWT amphibious assault transport of the San Antonio class.

Here are some pictures as the mighty ship edged down the Mississippi, under the Huey P. Long bridge and then passed by the City to thunderous cheers from spectators who lined the levees of this still hurricane-stricken city.
