There may be some truth to it. Xi has purged nearly 1.5 million people in Anti-corruption campaign since he came to power. Out of that many were from Jiang Zemin's faction. One of the blue eyed boys of this faction was Bo Xilai who is now in prison for life. Jiang Zemin and other folks who put Xi in chair thought he could be controlled. But Xi proved them wrong. It is not without reason why Xi abolished term limits. He has made so many enemies that if he leaves the chair he will be in trouble and his life might be in danger.

His close friend Putin has also followed the same trajectory. He served 2 terms and put his puppet Medvedev for one term and then amended the constitution to serve two 6 year terms. That was from 2012 - 2024. Now again he has amended the constitution whereby Putin will be Russian President until 2036. His Presidential term count is set to zero which means his previous terms doesn't count. The clock will start counting from 2024 for two 6 year terms. Putin also has made many enemies. He can't relinquish power. His life will be in danger. He has to die while in office.

One of the drawbacks of authoritarian systems is the leader always has to look over the shoulder lest they get thrown out or thrown in prison. Xi has enough enemies inside CCP who want him out. They might be egging him to go to war. It's a risky proposition. If he comes out victorious he will be even more stronger. If he doesn't it will become very easy to kick him out of the chair.

This is true, and I don't think Americans won't try to make this war as costly as they can for China but they won't risk any significant amount of troops for Taiwan.

As some say, the goal is to have a a long war, not a successful war.

I agree. If China attacks Taiwan, their goodwill with west will be over forever. They will be treated with the same hostility that Russia has. Their economy will take turn for worse.

The west will divert all thier attention towards China. We may even see some compromise on European front with Russia in future just to keep more powerful enemy China in check. India will see more positive attitude from western countries. The whole WW2, P5 countries narrative will change.

However if China invades. It seems highly unlikely they will do it. China's rise is like house of cards. It has many vulnerabilities. Their economy power is built on exports to very same countries that they are threatening. Their military hardware is not up to the mark. Most importantly within CCP not everyone is fan of Xi's agressive policies.

People are comparing Ukraine and Taiwan. The thing with Russians is that they are white Christians. This is why some in west have a little soft corner for them. With Chinese this is not the case. Westerners will not allow a non white country standing up against them. This is why I believe US would be more ruthless dealing with Chinese compared to how they dealt with USSR.

CCP is house of cards. A lot of their cader has money invested in west and American multinational companies have too many leverage points within China. Xi will face a lot of problems including his own party members turning against him.

Economic sanctions plus a naval blockade means complete collapse of their economy. How will they feed their 1.5B people? Underneath all thier propaganda videos and bravado posts on social media, there isn't much China can do.

Xi thought Biden is weak and a strongly worded threat will force him to bend over. This was their miscalculation. A similar miscalculation they did against Modi in Ladakh. This is why they don't know how to exit from this situation and save face.
