The US defence secretary has issued his strongest warning yet about Russian aggression in Europe and the Middle East. He accused the Kremlin of "nuclear sabre-rattling" and said Vladimir Putin was "way off track" in Syria.

Ash Carter said the US was adapting its "operational posture and contingency plans" after Russia's violation of the sovereignty of Ukraine, intimidation of Baltic states, and its intervention in Syria.

He also expressed his "deep concern" about China's building of artificial islands in the South China Sea, saying it could lead to future military conflict between nations in the region.

Mr Carter, who recently returned from an eight-day visit to Asia, was speaking at the Reagan National Defence Forum in California.

He said: "At sea, in the air, in space and in cyberspace, Russian actors have engaged in challenging activities.

"And, most disturbing, Moscow's nuclear sabre-rattling raises questions about Russian leaders' commitment to strategic stability, their respect for norms against the use of nuclear weapons and whether they respect the profound caution that nuclear-age leaders showed with regard to the brandishing of nuclear weapons.

"We do not seek a cold, let alone a hot, war with Russia. We do not seek to make Russia an enemy."

He continued: "But make no mistake, the United States will defend our interests, our allies, the principled international order, and the positive future that it affords us all."

Mr Carter said that the US was investing in new weapons technology which was "relevant to Russia's provocations".

These include an electromagnetic rail gun, lasers, new electronic warfare systems, and "a few surprising ones I really can't describe here".

Just a lot of fluff to justify more defense spending. The Russians will not even care to respond, or at least, let's hope so.

America is way ahead of all the countries in the world in every sense. The fact is that America doesn't show off all of its assets for the sake of country's safety.

I believe you got your analysis the wrong way, kashatrya87:

US is likely to interpret everything in the world in its own way, always wrong, as long as it favours them.

1.) it was not Russians who made a move to Eastern Europe, they were already there for 300 years. It was US who tried to take advantage of Russian weakness post end of Cold War in 1987 that they tried to move into Russian area of influence. Hence trouble in Ukaraine and other east European states was inevitable.

2.) it is Americans who for no reason but all false pretences moved to capture oil fields of Iraq in 1991 and 2003. All false evidence was created to justify these invasions. Result is that Sunni and Shia civil war has started in Iraq, Syria and Yemen. Soon other nations like overheated Turkey and very subdued Iran will join. ISIS is direct result of Sunni revolt against handing over power to Shias in Iraq.

3.). The South China Sea military tensions are direct result of putting excessive cash at China's disposal. US shutdown its factories from 1987 till today and relocated to China to take advantage of cheap labour. Enormous FDI was poured into these factories and what President Reagan thought building a military force in Soviet or Russian backyard has in fact backfired in just twenty years. Exports at low currency rates generated excessive cash and military threats is direct result of that. Chinese are not threatening the Russians any more. In fact they are threatening US in South China Sea and Japan.

In short, although US blames everything on somebody else, is in fact themselves responsible for most of the ills in Eastern Europe, Middle East and South China Sea.

It's not my analysis. Just posted an article. By the way, I know enough about USA. I would support the Russians anytime if they against the Americans. Like presently, in Syria.
