US updates jet-engine technology transfer policy with India

Looks like PM Modi's growing friendship with POTUS Obama is yielding some good results for India. In a latest advancement, the US has updated its policy on gas-turbine engine technology transfer to India. This step would expand the cooperation between the countries, in the production and design of sensitive jet engine components.

The announcement of this news was done by US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter, when he met Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar during the latter's US visit.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed ways and means to move the ambitious Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) forward.

Talking of the DTTI progress as of now, both leaders expressed satisfaction, and committed themselves to identifying additional projects for possible co-development and co-production of high technology items, which can meet the transformational intent of DTTI.

At the Joint Working Group on Aircraft Carrier Technology Cooperation (JWGACTC), Parrikar and Carter commended positive discussions, especially in the area of Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment (ALRE). The statement said that they look forward that the same progress can be achieved at the second meeting of the JWGACTC in February 2016, which would happen in India.

The leaders were also satisfied with the Jet Engine Technology Joint Working Group (JETJWG), which had a meeting this week in Bengaluru, concluding its 'Terms of Reference' and having productive discussion on cooperation in this area.

Later, as he was interacting with the media, Carter identified DTTI as a very important step in realising the potential that the India-US defence partnership holds.

He also said that he and Parrikar had discussed the progress that has been done in the cooperation on jet engines, and aircraft carrier design and construction, as well as opportunities to collaborate on additional projects of interest. These projects would be undertaken to further Prime Minister Modi's 'Make in India' policy.

Parrikar also expressed his desire to further collaborate in the higher-end technologies within the framework of DTTI.

"The assurance I have, and I am confident of that India is placed at a level which would ensure that red tapism is cut. I think this is the biggest take home one can get. We have got a very clear promise and we have been experiencing it that our issues are fast tracked," he told reporters.
Meanwhile, the US defence industry has welcomed Indian Government's efforts to make necessary changes in its policies, which would facilitate increased defence manufacturing in the country.

Getting the U.S to share tech knowledge with co-operators is nothing to be scoffed at,that too when it comes to engines

Looks like the new Modi cabinet really knows what they're doing.

I don't know how far this news is true
I think India mainly has problems with metallurgy than with designing as comparatively low TeT , OPR values suggests .
Third generation nickel based super alloys casted in a directional solidification furnace added with rhenium and 10 to 12 elements are further added for mechanical strength ,corrosion resistance ,oxidation resistance more creep strength which gives creep advantage and phase stability has to be developed for such LBP engines . Though second generation nickel based super alloy has been developed and only a matter of time before third gen Ni based super alloys are developed .
Though titanium alloy are being developed and can be used like Safran uses them but it higher proneness to deleterious topologically close-packed phase precipitation .
BLISKS are another are of concern with high resistance to a combination of high loads and temperatures, together with high specific strength values have been developed but our Ti alloy microstructure of both the allotrophic forms have less than excellent creep ,oxidation and corrosion resistance which needs to be rectified for both blade and disks which have different requirements .
TBC based on yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) top coat, glass–ceramic bond coat substrate have been developed to be used on blades , combustors etc on our engine though we have only been able to use ceramic based TBC which has the problem of spalling and crack tip opening after 7 million cycles . Though use of yttria stabilized zirconia reduces the problem at 275 and 247 MPa at 800°C .
If US is helping us to overcome these deficiencies then well and good if they are not offering joint R&D in designing the core and metallurgy for better OPR ( achieved 21.4) , TET ( achieved 1700 K), BPR ( achieved 0.24), combustor efficiency, supersonic compressor regimes instead of subsonic , TWR ( achieved 7.8) then no thank you sir we would rather work on our own.

Metallurgy and Fluid Dynamics are complex disciplines, lot of trial-and-error, equations and derivations involve lot many assumptions, hence those who had a head-start will always be in position of advantage. Off late these areas have attracted lot of investments and grants from the government, particularly at institutes of advanced research like IITs and IIS.

India need 10 years of continuity of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar... DM a person from engineering background doing a great job and we need to recover the 10 years of undoing from previous government...

if congressi back power again, they gonna either sabotage or delay all these projects step by step,its their and their leaders fake nehru gandhis policy.
