The world is increasingly resisting Indian tech workers whose hard work for frugal salaries has become a legend.

NEW DELHI: The US is not the only country averse to Indian tech workers. The UK too has revised its immigration laws. In November last year, the UK announced its new visa rules which set a higher salary threshold for anyone applying under the Tier 2 intra-company transfer (ICT) category under which Indian tech companies take their workers to the UK.

Singapore is the latest to join the so called ‘keep the techie immigrants out’ camp. It is showing resistance to Indian tech workers
. Since 2014, the Singapore government has increased the minimum salary for eligibility to apply for a job in Singapore. It has asked companies to advertise jobs locally before applying for a work permit. Since February 2016, it has been withholding decisions on work permit applications of Indian companies.

Visas for IT professionals to work in Singapore have dropped to a trickle, prompting the Indian government to put on hold the review of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement with the country citing violation of the trade pact.

The world is increasingly resisting Indian tech workers whose hard work for frugal salaries has become a legend. It's a bit of a stretch to see the Indian techies as the new imperialists, but the fear they evoke in the west might be based on what happened nearly a century ago.

With the industrial revolution in the west, India became a big importer of textiles from being a leader in textile exports in a matter of decades—due to cheap mass-manufacture technology. England's cheap machine-made textile goods ruined India's superior but costlier textile industry and a sophisticated banking system that financed it.

Indian tech companies are the new textile mills of Manchester and Lancashire, churning out cheap services with which the local IT services industry in the US cannot compete. While the English mills had a free run in absence of any tariff barriers in India, Indian tech companies face growing restrictions.

India's vast entry-level tech labour has become a challenge for the developed countries where wages for such labour are much higher. India already has an oversupply of software engineers which prevents salaries from going up. Industry veteran T V Mohandas Pai recently claimed that India's big IT services companies had come together to keep salary of freshers low taking advantage of the oversupply.

Indians have a natural flair for the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects. The huge trained workforce will eventually also produce innovators. In a few decades, Indian tech companies can evolve into cutting-edge tech leaders. Then they will be the real imperialists, warring with a far bigger global resistance.

Today's visa restrictions on Indian tech workers point to a new economic world order that can emerge in a few decades where Indian tech companies might be the conquerors.

Australia Abolishes Visa Programme Used Largely By Indians

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the government will replace its popular 457 visa with a new version.
__________________________________________
Story Highlights
  • The popular 457 visa allows temporary foreign workers into Australia
  • A majority of the 95,000 visa holders in the country are Indians
  • The visa change aims to reserve jobs for Australians
Melbourne: In an unexpected announcement, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull today said the government will replace its popular 457 visa that brings temporary foreign workers to the country with a new version that will recruit only the "best and the brightest in the national interest". The move to abolish the visa, used by over 95,000 temporary foreign workers, a majority of them Indians, aims at tackling the growing unemployment in the country.

Mr Turnbull made it clear that the idea is to 'put Australians first' by giving them priority for jobs currently open to overseas workers. He said on Facebook, "Our reforms will have a simple focus: Australian jobs and Australian values."

The country will welcome only skilled workers and they can no longer allow 457 visas to be "passports to jobs that could and should go to Australians", he added.

The 457 visa was designed to fill Australia's skills shortage and allow holders to bring members of their family to Australia on 457 secondary visa. But the programme was allegedly being misused by employers to import inexpensive workers. "It's lost its credibility," Mr Turnbull said.

It's not that the government will discourage foreign workers completely, but the focus will be on "filling critical skill gaps and not bring in foreign workers because an employer finds it cheaper and easier to do so".

With the new temporary visa, the number of occupations on the list will also come down. The new visa will be available for two or four years, requiring visa holders to have two years' work experience, a criminal record check, better English-language proficiency and mandatory labour market testing in a majority of cases.

Those who are currently in Australia on a 457 visa will not be affected by the new arrangement.

Mr Turnbull's announcement comes days after he visited India where a range of issues, including national security, counter terrorism, education and energy, were discussed and six agreements were signed.

two ways to turn a seeming negative into a positive for both parties

One is to offer more value for the higher salary - it's always a value for money measurement ...the two always go together ....so for a higher price , offer more

Second , stay home and develop your own enterprise .... work at home work and even work from home ....

apart for singapore, there is increasing hate crime in the other nations against indian people .....

many indians go abroad to earn 70% more or whatever and lose their lives, the familiy loses a father , husband son brother and so on .... even from a purely monetary point of view it was a lousy decision to gain 70% and lose the person ?

of course, i don't mean it totally that way , we lost a PERSON - and for what ? a few dollars and suffering from social exclusion ? This idea that the grass is greener elsewhere is often a cruel deception.

No , stay in india , help develop the place

and guess what ? ...once we really succeed in doing that , then they will suddenly reverse their policies and invite indians to come in , ....... by the planeload

There is no long run here, if we miss the bus now it will be the same thing as with the industrial revolution, setting us back decades.
yes I agree

it will take guts and brains to create something for oneself .... and those are hard to come by

its sure not a spoonfed situation

remember :- Be the change you want to see happen ........

Good for us in long run...educated Indians were working abroad leaving us with many poor Indians
Where is the industry for these educated Indians to find employment? Tech was supposed to be our ticket to leapfrog centuries of lagging behind. But we have failed to capitalize on our human capital.

Startup laws are messed up in India, innovation is not a priority. See how major Indian unicorns are rehashed business models of the west. Indian tech-sector is mainly IT sweatshops which are totally reliant on foreign business.

There is no long run here, if we miss the bus now it will be the same thing as with the industrial revolution, setting us back decades.

These things are cyclical, mostly based on populist policies of governments. End of the day, business needs will force IT companies to either outsource more work to India or change the visa rules to let more tech people come in. If neither is allowed then those Companies in USA and the West will become uncompetitive due to high costs of doing business.
(Same way it makes no sense to make safety pin in USA whatever the rules)

H1-B visa: More Indians in US seek jobs back home as Trump order says ‘buy American, hire American’

More Indians living in the US want a job back home after Donald Trump became the president of the world’s largest economy.

The number of Indians in the US searching for jobs in India has gone up more than 10-fold between December and March, according to an analysis by consulting firm Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Pvt Ltd, shared exclusively with Mint.

There were approximately 600 US-based Indians seeking jobs in India in December 2016. By the end of March 2017, the number had gone up to approximately 7,000, Deloitte analysis said.

This data comes amid a crackdown by the Trump administration on job visas for skilled workers, including software engineers from India

There is massive fraud and abuse of H1b system. Goal of H1b was to bring highly educated workers only when Americans were not available at the same pay scale. Instead IT firms use this to get cheaper workers to replace existing US workers. Obviously, there will be resistance to this and that's what Trump said. Hopefully, now real talent will not have to go through lottery to get job.

That logic is flawed. Yes by barring cheap Indian techies artificially will raise both jobs and wages in US but who is going to pay that extra Money. Simple solution will be to offshore more automate more .

Americans won't get any jobs only smaller us firms will have to pay more to stay competitive.

Exactly. A cushy job in a developed country is a real damage to Indian brain power. Now by staying in India these highly qualified people will be contributing to businesses innovation and entrepreneurship.

I hope Americans ban Indian doctors too as we need them desperately. God bless trump:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Only time can tell the real impact of such moves. For now only speculations.

Didn't Hindus do puja so that Trump could become president and 'punish' Muslims? The prayer half worked: Trump is president but he's busy punishing India, lol.:bounce:
If you think Trump has not taken severe anti-Muslim steps then please go and apply for any US visa as a Muslim. Your humiliation will be complete.
The H1b fraud needs to stop and that's good for both highly qualified Indian talent and US workers.

India to make a strong case even as Trump says ‘Hire American’

As US President signs order to review visa programme, Delhi to engage with Washington

India is planning to press its case further and partake in the review process of the H-1B issue even as US President Donald Trump signed an executive order — Buy American, Hire American — seeking to tighten the rules governing the sought-after visa programme.
“This is just the first step taken toward reviewing the programme. India is going to engage with the US on this matter. The review process will take three months. We will try and see how India can present its case in this review process that will have a bearing on the final decision,” said a senior official requesting anonymity.

Wishful thinking nothing more. But maybe I am heavily biased because I didn't succeed.

What product will you sell to domestic consumer ?

Yes consolidation of banks was required may be now banks will have enough financial muscle to support growth but NPA is a real bad news waiting to strike the market.
I was heavily disappointed in Indian Market. But I so want to be proven wrong !!

The products will have to be designed according to needs wants and budget of domestic customers don't you think.

Indian market is evolving I agree it's nowhere close to US or European spending levels but the growth rate in India is simply massive.

Indian will need much more data services as digitalization happens . Indigenous products will have to replace global brands at cheaper costs it's about time Indian service giants such as Infosys and TCS invest into product development to capture local market and drive out the likes of Microsoft Adobe etc.

I understand your frustration. No matter how much Hindus love and adore the west, the west keeps on kicking the hindus around like a football. It must be very hard.:biggrin2:
Why I don't see any frustration. I think we are in a good position compared to you converts. We aren't getting droned or mega bombs aren't being tested on us or western athletes not visiting us. Our people are doing pretty well in the West. Offcourse our people want to do better and that's why we want better access.

Apna Ghar sambhalo my convert friend. Hindus ke baare me sochne ke liye Hindus n India hai. We don't rely on the Chinese or the Arabs like you.

I have worked in US and Australia for last 15 odd years.
The amount of corruption and manipulation done by Indians to get work visas is legendary. Indians in general try to find every loop hole and try to rush in.
All that has happened now is the closure of these loop holes. Why would any nation want to be the dumping ground of people from other countries?

Aren't we resisting Bangladesh people into India? The case is pretty similar. These countries are not closing their borders but are ensuring as it was originally intended to let only highly skilled people into their country.

There will still be thousands of Indians who would still get visas to work in these countries but they will be highly skilled.
Just to show how screwed up Indian companies are...We had a project running out of Melbourne and needed to have lot of onsite people to deliver. One of the company involved to send the people had sent people one year out of college and was paying them the minimum amount required by law to have them here. The project as expected suffered. This is not an isolated case..

And in recent years, the off shore program has gotten worse. In one case the off shore project team in Bangalore had 25 member team but in reality 18 of them were freshers straight out of college learning on the job.....
