US student raped by batchmates in Mumbai

16 Apr 2009, 0337 hrs IST, TNN

MUMBAI: A 23-year-old American scholar at the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) at Deonar was gang-raped by six of her batchmates after a drinking binge in a Mumbai apartment, police said on Wednesday. Three of the accused have been arrested.

The victim, who came to Mumbai four months ago for a diploma course at the institute, said in her statement to the police that she and the six suspects left the campus on Saturday for Andheri, where they partied at a hotel. Later, she accompanied them to a flat, also in Andheri, owned by one of the accused. There she was repeatedly raped while in an unconscious state, police said.

She awoke to find herself alone in the flat the next afternoon and returned to her hostel at the institute, police added. Cops said medical tests had confirmed rape.

The cops insisted the rapists were her batchmates at the institute. “We found during the investigation that the six were students of the institute and all of them were from outside Mumbai. They were in the city to study at the institute,’’ a senior police officer said.

However, a TISS source said that the accused were not students of the institute. “The girl herself told the institute that the perpetrators of the assault were not TISS students,” the source said.

Police said the accused were Vinamra Soni, Jaskaran Singh Bullar (alias Karan), Harsh, Anish, Devasi and Kundan. The cops have arrested three of them and a manhunt is on for the rest. Police said the victim took two days before approaching them, as she was not in a position to do so on the day of the rape.

“We left the campus around 10.30 pm on Saturday and took two autorickshaws to Andheri, where we partied at a hotel. We decided to spend the rest of the night at a flat in Andheri owned by one of the boys I was with,” the victim told the police in a statement.

It is very sad that we keep on hearing these Rape incidents these days. We need to have stringent punishment to avoid such incidents in the future.

Very bad news as an Indian and as a human being I am very much ashamed and all these criminals should be whipped, and also that many rapes actually committed against girls in our country , and I'll hope that same will be done in same mettle in case of the such atrocities against our own ladies.

I may be overstepping, but how does this post any how project a bad or good image of India anyway? This is a fact, a sad but very true one. But if someone paints a picture of barbaric India based on this event he is not worth the time or any post about a good event to waste.

We are not Chinese, neither we are Pakistanis or any other. We are Indians, one of the true democracies in Asia and we should not balk to address and condemn the issues that trouble us, even though that might not give a pretty picture.

Then what's the difference between China and us when we speak about freedom of speech. An image of country is moulded by the events that take place in that country not by how the government decides to project the image. We need to discuss evil things in a country just as we discuss about good things. We cannot just close our eyes selectively and believe that everything is fine.

Such crimes need to be punished in a stringent manner (may be capital punishment) to deter others from doing it or even think about it.

And while you're at it, you might also like to post about increasing crime figures, politicians with criminal records, the antics of BSP & SP, child molestation etc.

I'm sure it'll give loads of fodder to all the Pakistani and Chinese forums out there...

^I don't understand this 'fodder' theory. Aren't these supposed articles about crime figures, politicians etc. etc. already out there? A simple google search will elicit plenty of 'fodder' for the Pakistani and Chinese forums.

The articles here are for discussion and if you don't like them then better not to reply to them.

DD rape is bad and evil and everything but why don't we also discuss each and every murder/theft/road accident that happens?

Many rapes occur every year but why this particular one is being singled out for special treatment?

The only possible response to such a thread is "hang them" or "punish them" etc. etc. which is basically a waste of bandwidth, nothing else.

Well that's not reasonable I've been around drunk people late and night and they don't rape each other.
