Story:
Fun fact: Mauritius (and not the Maldives), has territorial claims over British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).
Maybe a formal Indian endorsement of these territorial claims will be a great way to needle back at the US for its recent gaandmasti off Lakshadweep.
It's brilliant because:
We need to start showing the Americans that if they want to lead a China-containment effort in the IOR, they can't accomplish this by disrespecting India.
Unlike Guam is to China, BIOT is within range of a much wider spectrum of Indian arsenal, and India can annihilate BIOT without the use of nukes.
Why and Why Now: We've to try and understand why the US Navy did this FONOP, and why now. Is it because we're standing our ground with S-400? Are they starting to regret getting India a chair on the Afghanistan table? Does the US want to make Modi appear weak during the thick of the West Bengal elections? Amorphous hostility between the Democrats and the BJP beginning to play out?
Options: A diplomatic offensive against British sovereignty over BIOT. India sends a pair of heavily-armed Kolkata-class DDGs into BIOT waters at Mauritian "invitation."

It's brilliant because:
- India isn't claiming these islands, we're endorsing a third-party's claims
- India gets to play the colonialism card, citing the history of the British ethnic-cleansing the islands off the locals to set up its base there
- Diego Garcia currently isn't US territory, it's British, leased to the US
