Cold War end will be when US-China also disengage economically. Right now US is so much dependent on China for consumer goods (one single source) and some supply chain products that no disengagement is possible. That is why that propaganda from both sides makes it look like Cold War. Behind the scene it is pally-pally. Otherwise why would US and Chinese presidents hold one to one discussions. This was not a one hour chit chat. It was two hours serious discussion. What transpired during the discussions,….. nobody knows. But as immediately the Chinese Threat of Taiwan takeover has died down. Biden has also called off his private covert as well otherwise investigation of Covid virus Origin. Everybody knows it came from Wuhan Lab but Biden let Chinese off the hook. In return, the Chinese called off their postured invasion of Taiwan.

What an arrangement……

The real cold/hot war will start only when US China economic disengagement is complete.. China has time until then, to overmatch US Japan alliance in South and East China Sea.. Once US China are decoupled, US will start piling on real pressure.. Now, because of their crippling supply chain dependence on China, US can't do much even if it wants to..

New Caledonia is one of those island countries that are literally dependent on French concessions and funding to survive. They do not have any major economy or technology to survive on their own. France manages them more like a local province than an overseas colony. That's how France circumvented the anti-colonial political position in the UN.

The other choice for Caledonians is to become independent and then fall into the Chinese debt trap. Why bother when the French are bailing them out? Most NC folks are completely Francized. Their names, culture, music, etc., are all as French as France itself.

You see the chaos playing out in the Solomon Islands as that country is in a struggle between pro-Western Taiwan-recognizing political parties and pro-China PRC-recognizing parties. The last thing the French would want is the Solomon Islands becoming a launchpad for PLAN bases.

This is New Caledonia - right across the sea from Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. Imagine a Chinese military base there. The Americans would rather buy New Caledonia from France if they were to try independence.

Well, looks like China got its wish of expanding into the Pacific. The Solomon Islands is too deeply compromised unless the Australians and Americans are willing to give them billions in free aid. Now it's basically a race between who writes a bigger cheque.

Shouldn't be a problem for the Americans since they can print as much as they want out of thin air and the world can finance their money-printing.
