WASHINGTON: The US today broadbased its strategic ties with India by pledging to back New Delhi's entry into elite nuclear clubs and as a permanent member of the reformed UN Security Council.

In a joint statement issued at the end of the five-day visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US and after his summit meeting with President Barack Obama, the two countries decided to cooperate in combating terrorism.

They stressed the need for concerted and joint efforts includin ..

Re: US backs india as a permanent member of reformed UN Security Counc

This is pure BS.

US did not back India in anything during Modi's just concluded visit.

One reason, US State Department was envious of a Rock Star reception given by India Diaspora in New York. They could not match it at all in Washington and in the Whitehouse reception.

All political and economic talks were below par, hence Modi held back signing of the Apache and Chinook helicopter deals worth $3 billion.

Lethal force,

Sir,

Here is one, but multiple other article elsewhere each saying, Modi reception in Washington was lukewarm. Here is the openning:

BY: JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS
In a get-to-know-you visit fraught with awkward undertones, US President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought to repair a strained relationship between their nations on Tuesday, emerging with expressions of goodwill but little in the way of concrete deals.
At an Oval Office meeting and during a stroll around the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Obama and Modi emphasised what they had in common as democratic leaders who overcame personal obstacles, campaigned as outsiders and embraced technology as a vital tool in politics and......

US is looking for a junior Ally for it's FORCED and falsified unjust "WARS" and drag India into it.

India wants a UNSC seat but not as a lackey of US.

Unless US changes it's definition of Good and Bad terrorists nothing would happen and US would create more and more enemies.

Re: US backs india as a permanent member of reformed UN Security Counc

No serious US- India rapprochement occurred during Modi's recent visit. Here is a New York Times editorial (it is long after Modi's Visit).

Intrestingly NYT also apologized for very unpleasant cartoon during Modi's visit. They blame it on cartoonist who is a China man and lives in Singapore. What else to expect from him.

All this happening because, I believe the Indian community in US showed a huge support to Modi as evident from Madison Square Garden successful applause. This knocked some sense into US State Department honchos. They are begining to realize their error for a Luke warm Washigton reception and practically no major promises or achievements.

Here is what New York Times editorial said:

The Opinion Pages | EDITORIAL

India and America, Beginning Again
By THE EDITORIAL BOARDOCT. 5, 2014

President Obama and India's new prime minister, Narendra Modi, have done the minimum needed to infuse new energy into a bilateral relationship that had run aground. During their talks last week, both men spoke of their democracies as natural partners, an idea that every president since Bill Clinton has tried to capitalize on, with limited success. To address the challenges before them, including a rising China, Mr. Obama and Mr. Modi are going to have to work harder, so relations don't atrophy or become more strained.

Economics is a priority. Mr. Modi won election in May by promising to free business from constraints, restore growth in India's economy and create jobs for millions of young people. India-America trade grew to $97 billion in 2013 from $19 billion in 2000, and the goal is to expand that fivefold. American businesses are eager to cash in on Mr. Modi's invitation to help India, the world's second-most-populous nation, meet its defense, infrastructure and power needs. The two leaders plan to speed things along with a joint investment initiative and a partnership to increase access to clean water and sanitation.

But they failed to break an impasse on two major irritants: trade and taxes. Chief among the issues is India's refusal to endorse a new World Trade Organization pact if it does not address New Delhi's protectionist concerns about food security. There was also no reported progress on a bilateral investment treaty or reform of tax laws in India that have made Americans reluctant to invest there. Civilian nuclear energy cooperation is also stymied. The United States agreed in 2008 to permit sales to India of nuclear power equipment and fuel for civilian energy uses. But American companies have not benefited because India adopted an onerous liability law.

The meeting produced some agreements, including renewal of a 10-year defense cooperation agreement, a promise to cooperate on maritime security as China presses claims in Asian waters, and several clean energy initiatives. The leaders pledged support for Afghanistan and efforts against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, and the Pakistani Taliban.

But there was no sign of progress on such strategic concerns as how to curb the nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan and limit chances of another war with Pakistan over Kashmir or between India and China over their border. There remain, too, serious questions about whether Mr. Modi, a Hindu nationalist who was denied an American visa after the 2002 sectarian killings in Gujarat when he was chief minister there, will defend the rights of all Indians. While Mr. Modi expressed concern over the Islamic State, he did not sign up for the coalition led by the United States. And there was no mention of solutions on the differences with Washington on Ukraine and Iran.

Estranged during the Cold War, India and the United States have much to gain from collaboration. The coming months will show whether Mr. Obama and Mr. Modi can turn aspirations of "strategic partnership" into reality.

Re: US backs india as a permanent member of reformed UN Security Counc

It is the US that is blocking the UN security council reforms, Russia, France firmly support India.

China and USA co operate in various fields that includes UN security council related matters.

UK follows USA.

The statement is meaningless and worthless, until concrete steps and procedure are announced for UN reforms.

India need grow some balls and do what they did on 11 May 1998 and go it alone and take a vote on UNGA and face up to UNSC and tell them we want to be on the UNSC on the same terms of the current UNSC permanent members. What is the worst that can happen - The Pakis will cry and the Italians might shout and South Koreans will scream but watch how they vote in UNGA for India. It will be good to have a litmus test to see how many want to vote for the best candidate and how many actually want reform. The candidature for India in UNSC is undeniable and meets the criteria which needs to be high. In fact India has crossed that criteria long time ago if one looks and compare to the last entrant into the UNSC in 1970s. Whoever comes along and joins - we need to look after ourselves. I am hearing some good sound bits that Modi has put a deadline of 2015 - some 70 year anniversary in UN.

Yeah, apart from the high voltage PR blitz, the confabulations failed to produce much substance.

Attributing it to 'jealousy' factor is juvenile... statecraft does not work that way.

After years of frigid relations, it is natural for relations to take time to thaw. So Modi visit could be seen as a good step in the right direction. And what mattered was that the White House did not utter anything to puncture the euphoria... they more or less going with it. So the intent is there. But will take some time mending the relations. All TV channels going hyper cannot give a real picture.

There is no reason yet for India to believe that Washington will back India for the UNSC permanent seat. It is still far way. Some adolescent reporter seems to have manufactured that bit of information. No country, least of all the US, will reveal its hands that much until the last day.

This is pure BS.

So the US's pledge of backing for entry into elite clubs is to India ALONE?!

IF, IF that's true, well done America :thumb: a clever ruse at no cost to divide the bundle of India Japan Germany and Brazil.

Re: US backs india as a permanent member of reformed UN Security Counc

Every country on the security council has pledged to support India except China. China has come out in a statement that they support India alone but not as a group of 4 with Japan, Germany and Brazil. India is in a group of 4 that all support each others bid for a permanent seat on the UNSC. China's reasoning was that they don't want to see anymore "developed countries" on the UNSC, but I think they basically don't want Japan on there. Reforming the UNSC is not such a simple thing, because how would India go about it? Join with all the other 3? Now this is an even bigger shake up. Various other nations have complained that since more than 50% of all UNSC actions involve Africa, some African nations should have a permanent seat. Overall the issue is quite complex and Indians should not get worked up. India is already headed in that direction and the only category that doesn't set India apart is economy. Better we Indians wait a decade till India is clearly ahead of the other 3 and can make an even stronger case for being on the UNSC. There's really no need to kill ourselves trying really hard to get on the UNSC now, when it is pretty much destined anyways and will happen without any effort as India continues to boom and outpace any other major developing nation after China, which is already on the UNSC.

Everyone laugh his ass off and India will waist all the credit she accumulates among her supporters. These credits were earned with Indian money and Indian blood.

What criteria? If India has satisfied the preconditions, why she need another 3 countries to join her? The last entrant didn't gang up with anyone knocking the door of UNSC.

I am hearing some good sound bits that Modi has put a deadline of 2015 - some 70 year anniversary in UN.
Then what? Quite the UN?

I believe G4 the group of four countries which support each other's bids for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council is a movement that is asking and communicating that UNSC reform is needed. It is a larger voice beyond G4 and also many country are seeing the expansion is needed for relevance. India participation is there and reasons for that are evident because it deserves to be on the UNSC and it deserves to be a permanent member. The confusion comes like you have rightly pointed out is that the G4's bids are often opposed by certain countries, particularly their economic competitors or political rivals. You have also pointed out and asked why India joined with the G4 when it can go alone. I leave that to the EAM to reward you with later when India is on the UNSC. I believe it was tactical - a bit like PRC wanting to be one and asking 4 others to join for the 6 country in talks with North Korea - why need other country to join - UNSC member(s) included.

For criteria India meets the criteria. Unless you have a different criteria that includes non-democratic principles. Whats your criteria for the next entrant to UNSC. There are commentaries where India is the only one out of the G4 that meets the criteria that needs to be on the higher side.

Not sure what you mean by Quite the UN. Do you mean Quit the UN. I am sure if UN wants to have relevance it needs to reform. Also for the last entrant when you say it didnt "gang up" with anyone i am not sure you have the facts right. How did the last entrant to UNSC get into the UNSC. What was the criteria ...

Richard Nixon And Pakistan's Yahya Khan: How They Changed History And Ended Up Pariahs

Yahya agreed, but the matter was not raised again until October 1970, when he visited the White House and discussed China with Nixon and National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger.

The following month, Yahya Khan visited Beijing, where he was warmly greeted by Chinese Premier Zhou En-lai. During that trip, China signed a number of military supply agreements with Pakistan and even erased financial debts the country owed to Beijing.

"[Yahya Khan] conveyed President Nixon's proposal for sending an envoy to China to meet Zhou En-lai or some other Chinese leader to discuss problems between the two countries," Mohammed Khan said.
Please hang the photo below on all the walls in PRC and the (one of the) reason why it is on the UNSC:

one can understand why Pakistan keeps asking PRC for more and more free support - they have a unsettled colossal bill and some can say perpetual bill (along with anti-india role). the pakis sometimes calculate this by recognizing UNSC entry and the growth of PRC after 1970 till today in US Dollar terms. Sales commission ??

Also why did USA vote against PRC in resolution 2758. USA was on the the UNSC members and there is discussion that ALL UNSC must agree for new entrant.

Also United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 was done in General Assembly. Can India go to United Nations General Assembly and ask for all the members to vote on its candidature for UNSC entry and permanent membership.

Also what about the controversy of Taiwan after United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758.

Ma accused of 'lying' about relations - Taipei Times

Some say the last entrant into UNSC was flawed and it is a fact that the next entrant of UNSC will do it in the right and proper way. Only a opinion of one of many.

It is good that PRC and all UNSC permanent members has said they support UNSC membership for India. I am sure PRC and India relationships will become better and stronger and also it is needed for PRC to remove (the importance of) the Pakistan parasite in Sino-Paki relations ...

India on UN security council will make no difference at all. The UN is no longer an effective organization.

Too many wars have occurred in the last 25 years with completely ignoring UN. Having a veto or not makes no difference.

yes, UN and UNSC are just nominal and a drain on our money, thats why India has not given proper thrust to this issue as it used to do in UPA 1 era.
