UN snubs India on military group, trashes claims that UNMOGIP has lost relevance:taunt:

In a clear rebuff to India, UN's chief military observer in India and Pakistan mission - UNMOGIP - Major General Young Bum-Choi has trashed New Delhi's claim that the military group has lost its relevance and needs to be disbanded.

"A permanent peace settlement should be arranged between the two states (India and Pakistan) and only then UNMOGIP should fade into history," the general said in an interview published in the February 2013 issue of the UN newsletter.

Maj-General Y. Bum-Choi's views are published in the February issue of UNews.
His remark is bound to create ripples in New Delhi, which has taken a tough view following the brutal killing of two Indian soldiers by Pakistani army men on the Line of Control on January 8.

While Islamabad has been seeking a UNMOGIP probe into the killings, India sees it as a ploy by Pakistan to internationalise the Kashmir issue.

India has been arguing that UNMOGIP's role has been overtaken by the Shimla Agreement of 1972. The UN official, however, said the UN mandate 307, which was issued in 1971, directs the UNMOGIP to supervise along the LoC and report back to the UN headquarters.

"I know that since the 1972 Shimla agreement, the Indian government's standpoint is different, which is that India (does not need) UNMOGIP anymore. According to them, the issue is not third-party's engagement issue, it is a bilateral issue, as stated in that agreement," he said.

General Choi of South Korea, who was appointed the head the mission by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in June last year, made it clear that the UNMOGIP will not be wound up. "UN's position is that UNMOGIP could be terminated only by a decision of the Security Council. The Shimla agreement does not supersede the UNMOGIP mission here until another UN resolution for terminating it is issued. Indians may have another point of view when they interpret the Shimla agreement. But whenever we would terminate the UN mission here, the consent of both parties will be essential." he said.

On January 22, Indian envoy to the UN Hardeep Puri had said that in times of austerity, bodies such as UNMOGIP should be wound up. However, the UN official said Pakistan has to be on board if UNMOGIP has to be wound up.

General Choi said he believes that it is unlikely that the tension on the LoC will spiral into a major conflict between India and Pakistan. "There are always tensions between the two states-firings sometimes big firings, but I don't think the series of firings will escalate into a major conflict," he said.

I would like to know more about this group. Where are they stationed and why India is not kicking them out if they are operating from India and undermining our sovereignty.

I would like to know this from GoI. Anyone with RTI ? Or raise question with Media, who can further build the consensus and make sure they are kicked out if ^ is the case.

UN is the most useless organization of the face of the planet. If tomorrow a war breaks out between India and Pakistan they will not be able to do anything about it except have round table conferences in some exotic location and talk about what should be done and when its over what could be done....

Since the time UN was spawned it has not been able to achieve any thing of significance, it has not been able to stop any war or massacres in any of the continents.

Observing the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir

The first group of United Nations military observers arrived in the mission area on 24 January of 1949 to supervise the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. These observers, under the command of the Military Adviser appointed by the UN Secretary-General, formed the nucleus of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).

Following renewed hostilities of 1971, UNMOGIP has remained in the area to observe developments pertaining to the strict observance of the ceasefire of 17 December 1971 and report thereon to the Secretary-General.

Location: The ceasefire line between India and Pakistan in the State of Jammu and Kashmir

Headquarters: Islamabad (November-April) / Srinagar (May-October)

Duration:
January 1949 to present

Thanks a lot,

I am going to e-mail my point to NDTV, IBN Live and Times Now.

If after Shimla agreement this group is useless and null then why we should assist them in India. Pakistan can have this group in their territory because they can sleep with 'many and any' just to make sure their animosity with India is catered.

I would blame GoI, who has tendency to act only when it is politically point scoring, even on foreign policy issues.

If MEA and its spokesperson has mentioned it twice and recently at UNO, given reference of Shimla agreement after LOC attack by Pakistan then why we are still providing them mission in India ?

How these gestures are still geo-political compulsions for us especially when these are/will undermine our sovereignty and any genuine claim in future.

What we are trying to achieve and what is stopping us to behave like a nation. Can't we see how nations like USA, China have been bulldozing such challenges (humiliating) if ever undermining writ of their nation. Oh ! they never make stupid decisions of allowing other to interfere rather nip it in the bud in first place.

Why we need to pretend so goody goody when there is no one, not to mention what Pakistan has been doing by not only invading our borders many a times times but openly sponsoring terrorism against us even attacking both national and state parliaments, the temples of democracy.

The left leaning congress purely serves its own and foreign interests. In the land of mir jaffar we have ensured serpents like Nehru- gandy family have the ability to control the country's fortunes. Shame on us.
