UK, India's DRDO working together on jet engine
Press Trust of India | New Delhi April 13, 2017 Last Updated at 20:13 IST

Britain's engineering major Rolls Royce and DRDO have been working on developing an engine for military jets and the UK is keen on many such joint projects, British Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said today.

After holding talks with Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, he said Britain has also agreed to having defence equipment cooperation with India for collaboration in developing military hardware, including air defence missile systems.

Sir Michael said the two sides also agreed to cooperate in readying aircraft carriers, which are under construction, for sea trials. The cooperation will cover technical aspects, training regimes and doctrines on deployment of the aircraft carriers.

On the jet engine project, Stephen Phipson, head of the UK's defence and security organisation in the departnment of international trade, said the gas turbine engine will have high-class military technology without elaborating on details.

"Together we can build one of the most efficient jet engines," he said.

Sir Michael, here on a four-day visit, stressed on deeper bilateral ties in defence production notwithstanding UK's strict export control regime. He said the British government had approved 99 per cent of all export licences for defence supplies to India last year.

"We want to see collaboration between our defence companies so that they can use India as launchpad for export to third countries," he said.

Replying to a question, he said there was no specific talks on fighter aircraft.

The Defence Secretary said the two countries agreed to continue bilateral defence exercises. Army, navy and air force of the two nations will have exercises this year.

The British Defence Secretary said the two sides resolved to ramp up cooperation to contain cyber crime, particularly in the financial services sector.

Identifying terrorism as a major threat, he said Britain wants to deepen cooperation with India in fighting the menace.

Referring to Afghanistan, he said the UK will work with India and other governments in the region to bring down tension in the war-ravaged country.

Asked about alleged corruption involving a British defence firm which is active in India, he refused to comment.

Now which engine is this one?

We know that Kaveri is being tweaked by Safran and now this one. Is it K-10 aka EJ-230 for AMCA?

so if considering this then I guess Kaveri will end up going to export versions of LCA Mk 1A and this new engine can be one for LCA 2 and AMCA or even maybe FGFA

Whether it's with coperation with France or UK or any country, we need an engine immediately with complete technology and indigenous manufacturing. As soon as we have engine, sooner we become a regional power.

Now the question is why Brits are willing to give such advanced tech to us....

Sure we got Kaveri, but EJ 230 is another gen we may take atleast 10-15 more years given the enthusiasm of IAF towards Indian planes...

This could be due to the un heard dealings between GoI and Britan...

You give us the tech we invest its dev cost in your country....

Given that Brits are facing financial difficulties after the Brexit....

Or the above could just be one of my wild imagination ....

Anyways, I'd be very glad to see LCA mk2 / AMCA using EJ 230.

This move of GOI to tie with Britain may be to send a signal to the US to agree for TOT for GE engine or joint development of engine with complete TOT and local production. In case the US still doesn't agree, it will be a strong message to the new Trump government that in case they don't give what India needs, we have other sources.

When India, the US and Europe share same vision to contain China, why doesn't they come forward and equip India with technology we need. Armed with experience in Kaveri, we can co-develop new engine with anyone.

For USA, they do realise that they cannot be the only super power, What happens when India learns enough? Then the Americans will feel threatened by "growing power of India in Asia" and they will try to prop perhaps Pakistan to counter India.

A lot of things have changed up since AJ has taken control of DM office. There are lots of background talks being held. There is a new interest for reviving Kaveri program (which is crucial for India) with any and all help including Brits. At the same time India is making good progress with French and India is trying to woo US too. Gone are the days of relaying on just one partner. Lot of exiting things will be revealed in future.

How do we know they are talking of Kaveri engine? Can be HTFE or HTSE which are less challenging?

We are not taking about old 40's era jet engine tech but newer gas turbine engine. Yes in theory jet engines follow very simple principal but to create an engine with required thrust to weight ratio is very hard. Also reliability of engine requires deep knowledge and facilities of metallurgy.

We already have a working gas turbine (jet) engine (Kaveri) but the issue is lack of thrust. This requires stability of fan blades at very high speeds and that too at very high temperature. India at the moment doesn't have the experience or required facilities to get the job done. So our best bet right now is to collaborate with an experienced foreign manufacture to fill technological gaps.

There are very few countries in the world that possesses this technology. Only US, Russia, UK, France have this tech. Even mighty China after spending billions in R&D (and coping Russian design) is still struggling to make a decent gas turbine engine. So if we succeed in this field even with western help it would be a ground breaking achievement for India.

Good point #1 - by going to britain we circumvent trump and his superiority complex and btw the brexit also means that now UK and EU are two separate entities and what we cant get from one we can now get from the other eg britain would be glad to talk to us if we get stuck with the french in EU and vice versa

your point #2 INdia haveing the messy, illogical and incoherent image we still have , hopefully only as a hangover from the past , the western world is still uncertain and uneasy as to our management systems with china they can b assured of a quick follow through but tilll today india has not been able to project as slick an image as china has

if Namo can help catalyse the change in that area , then you can watch as things change in proportion to how he succeeds

secondly thier military wariness of china is complicated by their need of china as a market for their products

and thirdly thier political perception that china is indeed a threat is just words and no strong political will in reality .

The problem is not just the thrust but also the heavy coremof this engine, second thing even those who say that they will help you building the one dont want you to have this technology. And lastly if we can build a complex rocket engine like a cryo engine, jet engine shouldnt be a big deal.
