U.S. Army Contracting Command has awarded AM General a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract to supply 6,576 M1151A1B1 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), popularly known as Humvee, to Afghanistan.

The estimated value of the contract is just over $45 million and includes HMMWV Expanded Capacity Vehicles (ECV) and capability expansion kits destined for the Afghan National Defense Security Forces.

The contract work will be performed in South Bend, Indiana, with an estimated completion date of Aug. 31, 2018.

The M115 HMMWV is a four-wheeled vehicle designed as carrier for troops and weapons, with modern variants capable of receiving a variety of armor upgrades and including a ring-turret for medium and heavy weapons such as machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and anti-tank weapons.

Other versions have been produced to serve as light cargo carriers, ambulances and command-and-control vehicles. It has served as the standard utility vehicle for the US military for decades and has been widely exported.

The HMMWV ECV is the fourth-generation HMMWV designed to replace the aging fleet of second-generation baseline A1 variants and most third generation A2 variants.

Upgrades to the HMMWV as part of the ECV variant include a more powerful and environmentally compliant 6.5L turbo diesel engine; a microprocessor controlled engine electrical start system; increased payload capacity (an additional 500 pounds); improved corrosion prevention; and access panels to facilitate maintenance.

any equipment supplied to Afghan Army has got the risk of being ended in Taliban militants, When Taliban attacks a base, Afghan army often retreats with weapons left behind, There are so many instances when advanced M4 Rifles, Sniper Rifles end up in Taliban hands.

If you read news, around 2 3 years back the US army had an issue during pullling out troops from Afghanistan. The cost of shipping back humvees, Mine Protected vehicles MRAPs and other equipment etc was more than the cost of equipment themselves and ran into billions of dollars.

So they are discarding it and giving it to neighboring nations etc

This is 2013 article

US faces $6bn bill to ship equipment home from Afghanistan

Pakis, Afghans etc got many high end stuff for free.
