U.S.S.Independence(LCS) -
A Triple Hulled, Weapon-Laden Monster. :usa: :australia:

We've been hearing rumblings about the U.S. Navy's triple-hulled ships, but here's one that was launched last month, the U.S.S Independence.. Built for General Dynamics by Austal ships in Perth Australia the leading aluminum ship building firm in the world.
It's called a 'littoral combat ship" (LCS), and the trimaran can move huge weapons around faster than any ship in the Navy. Ironic that with all that high tech built in, the ship reminds us of the Merrimac ironclad from Civil War days.
Littoral means close to shore, and that's where these fleet-hulled babies will operate, tailor-made for launching helicopters and armored vehicles, sweeping mines and firing all manner of torpedoes, missiles and machine guns.

These ships were designed to be relatively inexpensive this one's a bargain at $208 million and the navy plans to build 55 of them. This trimaran is the first of the new fire-breathing breed, ready to scoot out of dry dock at a rumored 60 knots. It's like a speedy and heavily-armed aircraft carrier for helicopters.

Hurray for our side.

Not one person thought that this post had any relevance on a military forum. Not one person raised a comment. Not one answer.

This small ship is the future of a modern navy. This is a complete new innovation from Australia for the US Navy. It is an important step in modern warships.
There is nothing else I can add for the forum on this. I did two posts and it covers what is happening.

I think you know what I am saying here Lethalforce. This is supposed to be a military forum. It isn't. It's bogged down in Taliban and anti PA stuff. If a member puts up any other topic it is ignored.
When I joined this forum virtually the first thing I asked was if the word Indian could be removed from a lot of topics so it could be truly opened up to international members.
This doesn't seem to be happening.

Wasn't this program shelved by the USN?

Sailor, mate this forum is new and the strength shows around 200 odd of which a handful are actively contributing. Not a lot of people are online, and some might not have the knowledge to contribute to the kind of posts you are coming up with. They are all here to learn from pros like you and in the future people will contribute a lot more. If more international members join in, that will make things better. I understand your frustration, but request you to keep posting all that you can as we all are learning from pros.
So expect you to keep posting articles in military equipment.
Thanks.

What war-fighting, capacity all i see is a puny little gun on the ship, a mine detector and lots of empty space in the design.

Last i checked the costs were around some half a billion dollar, waste of money, however the USN needs some new minehunters and ASW/escort ships, just dont know why they need to make them so expensive.

Well yes that's what I knew about the project, that LM and GD lost the contract. Thought that was the end if it.
Did not know of the program continuing.

The design posted by respected member Sailor and that is of General Dynamics / Austral design , in below here is the image of USS Freedom , LCS-1 , that was designed by Lockheed Martin consortium, built by Marinette Marine and first of its class in The US Navy and is seen for departure for an acceptance trial.

The picture is released by the US Navy and available on official website of The US Navy : Navy. mil at http://www.navy.mil/view_single.asp?id=62776

If it were not for the massive price tag I would be a big supporter of these vessels. They are ideal for the kind of close in littoral operations more often encountered in the wars we are fighting these days. Unfortunately they cost far more than they are worth.

Shame we (west) can't seem to be able to make cheap hi-end things these days.

Hahhahaha! This is more like what I am used to on forums. Snide remarks and negative comments to a post. Well done.

The thing about costing is that it is like trying to cost a T model Ford if they had made only one from the tooling up. If they have a design run of the same type, costs of course will be nothing like those stated.

But thanks for joining in members.

Multi national cooperation can solve the problem. If allied and friendly countries work together then costs can be shared and also construction costs can be bought down. For eg if India was brought on board ( provided a project was of common interest) then it's industries could be used to make components cheaper. I'm not talking in context of the LCS but in general.
The JSF is a good example of cost sharing between countries having common requirement.

This would be a great addition for the navy as they are great for anti piracy operations and shallow water operations. The Littoral combat aircraft is the need of the present day as th terrorists are nowadays trained also in marine sabotage.

Satish , I am agree with you that this ship can be useful for combat the terrorists , the terrorists are also getting marined , the design of USS Independence is looks quite attractive to look, how ever it depends on the delivery of assault by the ship, in the future to be seen, however in my opinion Somalia coast may be the ideal for this ships to operate, and I also agree with you on this LCS's usefulness in Anti Piracy operation.

Cant imagine something like the LCS being made for the purpose of Anti Piracy/ Anti Terrorism operations. So much money spent for such operations doesnt make sense.
