U.S. Navy destroyer USS Fitzgerald collides with Japanese vessel

Last Updated Jun 17, 2017 1:04 AM EDT

The U.S. Navy's USS Fitzgerald has collided with a Japanese merchant vessel, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.

Seven sailors are unaccounted for, said a spokesman for Chief Naval Officer John Richardson, and the Japanese Coast Guard continues to search for them. Additionally, two patients required medical attention, and other injured people are being assessed, the Navy said.

The Japanese Coast Guard is on the scene and providing assistance at the request of the U.S. Navy. The USS Fitzgerald is under her own power, although her propulsion is limited, according to the U.S. 7th Fleet. The USS Dewey, medical assistance and two Navy tugs are also being dispatched as quickly as possible. Naval aircraft are also being readied. The collusion was serious, but the extent of the damage and personnel injuries are being determined.

The collision occurred at 2:30 a.m. local time on June 17, about 56 nautical miles off of Yokosuka, Japan, according to the Navy.

Live footage shot from a helicopter Saturday morning by Japanese broadcaster NHK showed heavy damage to the mid-right side of the Navy ship, which appeared to be stationary in the water. People were standing on various parts of the deck.

The USS Fitzgerald, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer commissioned in 1995, is based in Yokosuka, according to the Navy. Its crew includes roughly 23 officers, 24 chief petty officers and 291 enlisted members of the Navy.

The U.S. Navy says the USS Fitzgerald suffered damage below the water line on its starboard side after it collided with a Philippine-flagged merchant ship.

It says the destroyer's propulsion is limited.

The Navy says the USS Dewey, medical assistance and two Navy tugs are being dispatched as quickly as possible. Naval aircraft are also being readied to help.

Japan and U.S. relations strengthened in 2015 through the release of revised guidelines, which provide new and expanded forms of security-related cooperation, according to the State Department. Japan provides bases as well as financial and material support to U.S. forces to maintain stability in the region.

Sure that cargo ship was Japanese??

I read a source that the cargo ship was a Philippine one sailing near the Japan Sea.

When I saw the news it said Philippines ship. But social media is saying Japanese ship. I guess it's both the same from a western perspective.

A : Our ship crashed against another ship in international waters...
B : With which country's vessel?
A : Japanese, or Philippines or something, one of those squinty eyed people.

Result :

CNN : Ship crashed with Japanese cargo.
Fox News : Ship crashed with Philippines navy.
Clinton supporters : Ship crashed because Trump won the elections.
BBC : Ship crashed with...whatever, it crashed because they left the common wealth. Should'a stayed with the common wealth.
NDTV : Ship crashed but what about 2002?

Don't you know that American soldiers never die? they either go missing or disappear, but they never die. Only Heathen soldiers bleed, get mangled, die and do all that stuff. Have you ever seen any picture of a mangled body of an American soldier?

These rats are very particular about hiding their wounds and scratching other people's wounds.

Whenever there is a casualty on the Indian side, they show mangled bodies of civilians, soldiers, blown up body parts. During the 1971 war, there was a soldier who was mutilated like Saurabh Kalia. His face was chopped up, nose and ears cut up and Times magazine had published this image on the cover page. His mother didn't know of his mutilation, and Indian Army had kept the news of the brutality a secret, but she saw it in the magazine and lost her mental balance. She was a single mother, and her husband had already died in the 65 war, and this was her only son. This was narrated by GD Bakshi, it's still there somewhere on youtube.

This is the kind of vile civilization that it is; Same with Britain. And here we have Indians thanking their gods that there was no torpedo explosion. So many people died when a bridge collapsed in Kolkata, no one bat an eye lid, and some random building catches fire in Britain, and Indians are walking over each other's heads to give condolences to a military vessel which was patrolling in waters hundreds of kilometers away from its shores where it was not supposed to be. They have a lust for being world police, well then, this is the price for it.

Ship crashed, building burned some westerners died, big deal. Move on. There is nothing more to this story.

*sarcasm on*

They can't even avoid a collision of a front line warship with a huge cargo carrier! The crew must have been having a 'happy hour' in the ante room with the choicest of scotch and female sailors on board! Who's bothered about running the ship? There are far better things to do, what?

*sarcasm off*

And these Yanks wanna rule the world by imposing a New World Order! Lol!

The hit a little left, engine room plus diesel fuel would have caused havoc. A little right the VLS would have been subjected to the impact possible blowing up both the destroyer and the cargo ship.
Would have loved it if us naval ship had blown up.
