U.S. Navy cruiser anchors in Port of Constanta
7 June 2011

The USS Monterey cruiser on Monday anchored in the Passenger Berth of the Port of Constanta (south-eastern Romania, at the Black Sea) and will stay in Romania until Thursday within a partnership between the Romanian Navy and the US Navy.

On this occasion, US Ambassador to Romania Mark H. Gitenstein will be holding a press conference onboard on Tuesday and journalists are invited to visit the US ship.

'The cruiser's visit to the Port of Constanta is part of the permanent efforts of the US Navy of strengthening the partnership with the Romanian Navy and of increasing the interoperability in the Black Sea area. Moreover, the USS Monterey cruiser is equipped with the AEGIS air defence system that represents the first stage of the adaptive phase approach of the anti-missile shield, an important element to Romania, which agreed to host interceptors within the second phase of the programme,' representatives of the US Embassy to Romania informed in a press release.
