Look at the environment. It looks like the same murky, brown harbour water.

The same ship again,

You can be skeptical until better pictures show up, for me it is as clear as day.

That is 1 big ship, clearly modeled on the Arleigh Burke class whereas the Kolkata class seems to be modeled on the European design with the radar at the top. Is FL-3000N Chinese RAM gonna be on it?

Radar at the top means less room for command and control facilities and all those fancy computing equipment.

Its just designed for a different mission. Radar is smaller so not as powerful re: range. Again, different mission.

You really think that us civilians have access to accurate information about defence systems? EVERYTHING is an opinion!!!

The speed, the armarments etc are all speculation. You think the Indian MOD just freely supply accurate information so that I can prove to you. Lets be realistic here.

by the way, are you saying that a smaller radar could be more powerful than a larger radar? come on, thats defying physics

Counter Points Winton, Don't Run from them..

Some things can be estimated correctly, somethings cannot.

Smaller and larger radar differences come only when other factors like frequency bands used are similar.

The MF-STAR on Kolkata class is a big radar. AESA and works in the S band compared to AN/SPY-1Ds PESA and S band.

You can say the AN/SPY-1D is probably half a metre bigger, overall. The smaller but more effective SPY-3 radar is much smaller than the SPY-1 or the MF-STAR, but it works in the X band and is much more accurate.

But there may be a huge power difference between the SPY-1 and MF-STAR.

The US navy's AMDR project also seems to be end as a big one. Without technology breakthrough in this aspect, countries like US and China simply choose the brute solution to pursue extreme requirments, which results more energy to power a bigger plate. I truly have some doubt about the sailors' healthy on these ships.

You need extremely high power if you want a full fledged BMD system. That's why AEGIS has a requirement for a 4-6MW radar.

Comparatively, for Anti-air role ~25KW is plenty. Sampson, EMPAR and MF-STAR are in this category.

No idea what will be Type 052D's radar specs.

Chinese have very little defense systems for their ships. They might as well
paint a bullseye on them.

There doesn't seem to be anything revolutionary coming out over the last 3 decades, so catching up is easy for some countries. more difficult for others.

I think you are talking about 1990s and early 2000s ships like Luhu and Jiangwei classes. The current breed have at least Type 730 CIWS AKA Goalkeeper+. The latest ones have Type 1030 and FL-3000N AKA Chinese RAM.

An order for 4 052Ds has been placed with DLS and the plan is to launch the 1st 2 ships in 2013.

DLS is likely to receive further orders for 052Ds together with JNS, with the latter gradually shifting its focus to building Type 055 DDGs, commercing 2013.

Re: 052d

Pictures taken on the last day of 2012 of the DDGs under construction at JNS:

DDG 150(inducted)

DDGs 151 and 152(about to be inducted)

DDGs 153 and 172(1st Type 052D on the left, D1)

DDG 173(D2)

DDG 174(D3, under construction in the hangar)

More sections for 052Ds spotted.

In addition to the DDGs shown, Submarines, LCACs, Minehunter/sweepers(see below), and Yuanwang Space Event Tracking Vessels are also being built at JNS' No. 3 Production LIne, a facility dedicated to Naval ships and special-purpose vessels.

Re: 052d

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding(SWS) last year won approval from the PLA's General Armament Department(GAD) to build military ships for the PLAN.

So far, there are 3 civilian shipbuilding companies(JNS, HDZHS and SWS) and one naval shipyard in Shanghai that are certified to build naval assets.

The GAD might as well make the Shanghai Shipyard based on Chongming Island its designated supplier. :cool2:

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.

They have really reduced the clutter around the radar mast, and from the shape it does appear that they are paying close attention to RCS, reducing the detection range.
I guess these new DDGs have 64 VLS launches, right?
so is this ship being optimised for anti-ship/land attack or more towards AAW/CBG escort?
I doubt PLAN would use these for ASW IMHO
