Turkish military begins build up on Syrian border, begins striking Kurdish positions leading to tens of deaths
January 17, 2018 - Fort Russ News - Paul Antonopoulos

AFRIN, Syria - The Turkish military build up on the Syrian border has ramped up as the operation to invade the Kurdish-held Afrin in northern Aleppo countryside is imminent.
This is the largest Turkish build up since the Syrian War began in 2011 and is slated to involve the Special Forces, Army, Air force and Turkish-backed Syrian militants.
Late yesterday afternoon the Turkish military began shelling positions of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), the Syrian branch of the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), that not only Ankara, but Washington also recognizes as a terrorist organization. Despite recognizing the parent organization, the PKK, as a terrorist organization, the US is still the main backer, funder and armer of the YPG.
Turkish forces shelled the towns of Shadirah and Iska on the outskirts of Afrin city. Around 70 Kurds became casualties from the resulting shelling.
Yesterday the Turkish president confirmed that Syrian militants will be involved in the operation to remove the YPG from Afrin.

Turks sting for the US.
"Military vehicles and equipment in the YPG inventory."
... The movement of weapons in Syria between the factions does not surprise anyone.
And when the arms delivered to Assad by Russia fall into the hands of the opposition, it looks like a natural process of the water cycle in nature.
YPG very seriously improved its inventory very seriously, with the help of the US and European states.
In its bins YPG has various weapons systems.
As a result of the analysis of open source (by open source), weapon systems were identified in the YPG inventory. "

officer, briefing on Afrina, told Syria's news network that the Syrian National Army (which FSA) had completed training and began to deploy near the Turkish border in preparation for the Afrin military operation.

Counterbattery Radar Cobra?

The operation is divided into four stages, the goal of each stage will be capture of a certain area, troops will come in from 4 directions, two strikes from the north of Aleppo (areas of the Euphrates Shield), two from the Turkish checkpoint.
From the Turkish state border, artillery will prevent YPG maneuvers.

Between the Turkish troops and the National Army a joint headquarters was established, which consists of officers from both sides.
Their task is to control units in battle. Approximately 5000 Syrian fighters will participate in the battle, but in their groups and in the specified area.
(Total, with the Turks - 27,000, against 17,000 Kurds).

BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:30 P.M.) – A Turkish military convoy – accompanied by Al-Qaeda-linked militants – has visited a key area that borders government and rebel-held lines in the western countryside of Aleppo province. The reported purpose of the visit by Turkish forces was to assess places suitable for the establishment of observation posts aimed at preventing a Syrian Arab Army offensive towards Idlib.

On Wednesday a Turkish Army convoy consisting of 6 vehicles entered western Aleppo province visited the rebel-held town of Al-Eis and its nearby hilltop (Tal al-Eis) for several hours.

The Turkish Army’s journey to the Al-Eis area was escorted by fighters of the Al-Qaeda affiliate group Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly called Jabhat al-Nusra) which is designated as a terrorist group by the United States and Russia.

According to opposition sources, the convoy brought with it a Turkish military delegation that observed the area around Tal al-Eis in preparation for the planned establishment of army outposts aimed deterring any future offensives by Syrian pro-government forces towards Idlib via the region.

Turkey was left without German tanks.

The German government suspended supplies of tanks to Turkey and their modernization because of the Ankara operation "Olive Branch" in Syrian Afrina, directed against the Kurds. This is reported by Spiegel Online.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Zigmar Gabriel came to such an agreement. "We can not predict the results of the ongoing negotiations on the coalition government and wait with the discussion of critical issues before the formation of a new Cabinet," the Foreign Minister said.

At the same time, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkish Foreign Minister, denied data on the freezing of supplies, Anadolu reports. "The commission on the issue of Leopard tanks was due to meet, but the meeting was postponed. It's not about freezing or canceling [deliveries], "he said.

The publication notes that earlier, Berlin had already unofficially agreed to carry out the requested modernization of the "Leopards" in Turkey. Thus, Germany intended to improve bilateral relations, but now, in the light of the ongoing military operation, it can send Ankara an incorrect signal, they believe.

Over the decade, more than 700 Leopards of different versions were delivered to Turkey. At the same time, the first deliveries were formalized as NATO military aid, which can only be used to defend against attack. The contract of 2005 provided only an obligation to notify Berlin of the resale of equipment.
