Strong quake hits central Japan, with tsunami warning issued
August 11, 2009 - 6:44AM
A major 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck central Japan early Tuesday, with a tsunami warning issued in the region, the meteorological agency said.

The quake hit at 5:07 am (2007 GMT) at a depth of 20 kilometres (12 miles) in the Pacific off Shizuoka prefecture, west of Tokyo, the Agency said.

Around 20 percent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan.

Large earthquakes jolt Tokyo, Indian Ocean

TOKYO — The Japan Meteorological Agency says a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 has shaken Tokyo and surrounding areas. No casualties were immediately reported.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a large 7.6 earthquake in the Indian Ocean about 160 miles (257 kilometres) from India’s Andaman Islands. A tsunami watch is in place for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh.

The USGS cautions that it is not known if such a tsunami has occurred.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency agency issued a tsunami warning from the Japanese temblor early Tuesday, which centred off the Suruga Bay, southwest of Tokyo.

The quake rattled furniture and walls in Tokyo but there have been no immediate reports of damages or casualties.

The quake occurred at a depth of 12 miles (20 kilometres). Public broadcaster NHK said a small increase of waves of some 10 inches (30 centimetres) was observed along the coastline of Yaizu City.

Local trains were temporarily halted for safety checks.

Update: It will strike in 1 - 3 hours

The update from CNN

(CNN) -- A tsunami watch has been issued after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean near India's Andaman Islands, authorities said.

The watch covers India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Bangladesh, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake struck at 1:55 a.m. (3:55 p.m. ET), about 163 miles (262 km) north of Port Blair, Andaman Islands, and 225 miles south-southwest of Pathein, Myanmar, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Its focus was about 20 miles below the Earth's surface. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.

"Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a destructive local tsunami and sometimes a destructive regional tsunami along coasts located usually no more than a thousand kilometers from the earthquake epicenter," said the bulletin from the tsunami warning center.

"It is not known that a tsunami was generated. This watch is based only on the earthquake evaluation. Authorities in the region should take appropriate action in response to this possibility."

The estimated tsunami travel time would be an hour or less to the coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, according to a bulletin issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

A tsunami would reach the coastlines of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia within one to three hours.

According to the geological survey, a 6.4-magnitude quake struck near the south coast of Honshu, Japan, 12 minutes after the Indian Ocean quake. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory following that quake, but said that the expected wave would be under 2 feet.

If the expected waves are of 2 feet, it should not be a big problem I think.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake has struck the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean while another has occured in Japan.

The quake in the Indian Ocean struck at a depth of 33 kilometres at about 1:55 am local time and was centered 260 kilometres north of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands, or about 825 miles west of Bangkok, the US Geological Survey said.

A tsunami warning will be in effect for the next one to three hours for parts of India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh

Meanwhile, a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 has jolted eastern and central Japan a government agency said, rattling houses in Tokyo.

The quake, which struck at 8.10pm Irish time prompted a tsunami warning for waves of up to 20 inches for parts of the Pacific coast, the Japan Meteorological Agency said on its web site

A highway was closed and a Chubu Electric Power nuclear power station at Hamaoka shut two units for safety checks.

The focus of the tremor was 20 km deep under Shizuoka prefecture, around 150km southwest of Tokyo, the agency said.

Indian island rocked by massive earthquake India's Andaman Islands have been hit by a massive magnitude 7.6 quake, triggering a tsunami watch for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.7, was 20.6 miles (33 km) deep and was centred 160 miles (260 km) north of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands, in the Indian Ocean.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami watch for the region.

Everyone keep safe. There will be aftershocks and this may start fresh tsunami so be extra careful. If possible, try and keep us informed of the situation.

I am very suspicious about these underwater earthquakes (given their location), especially the one 100 km from Andaman.

I can't help but wonder if China is detonating nuclear devices near the Indian Ocean tectonic plates to cause earthquakes, which can in turn lead to tsunamis. Since the tectonic plates are already under a lot of pressure, even a small nuclear device could cause a domino affect that would lead to an earthquake. And Chinese nuclear submarines are certainly capable of deploying such devices near the Indian Ocean tectonic plates near Andaman.

The timing is also suspect, since China has just re-emphasized their claim over Arunachal Pradesh, while increasing military incursions into that state and into Ladakh.

A Tsunami in this region would certain affect Indian naval bases in the Andaman area, as well as on the south-eastern coastline of India.

You are being paranoid about this, it is very unlikely. If China has actually exploded the nuclear devices, it is very easy to detect. All one has to do is, to go to the epicenter of the earthquake (assuming that's where the device is exploded) and determine the radiation levels of the water to see if any nuclear device is exploded or not. As simple as that.

If it was in fact a nuclear detonation then the fish near the site would've been vaporized. there would of been an increase/decrease in radiation levels in the Indian Ocean. ... if it is placed in a deep trench where the tectonic plates meet. ...

Tsunami watch issued for five countries canceled

Story Highlights
Watch covered India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Bangladesh
It was issued after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean
Quake with 6.4-magnitude occurred near Japan 12 minutes later
(CNN) -- A tsunami watch issued for five nations after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean was canceled about two hours later.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had issued the watch for India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Bangladesh after the quake, which struck at 1:55 a.m. Tuesday (3:55 p.m. Monday ET).

Its epicenter was about 163 miles (262 km) north of Port Blair in India's Andaman Islands, and 225 miles south-southwest of Pathein, Myanmar, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake's focus was about 20 miles below the Earth's surface. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground. Watch where the earthquakes hit »

"Sea level readings indicate that a significant tsunami was not generated," the warning center said in a bulletin. "Therefore, the tsunami watch issued by this center is now canceled."

According to the geological survey, a 6.4-magnitude quake struck near the south coast of Honshu, Japan, 12 minutes after the Indian Ocean quake. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory following that quake, but said that the expected wave would be under 2 feet.
CNN's Augie Martin contributed to this report.

Are you saying there would be less radiation effect if it was placed in a trench/hole? Besides, water absorbs/converts high frequency radiation into heat (infrared radiation), doesn't it? So it would result mostly in an increase in water temperature in the underwater region.

What about a large conventional bomb explosion at the tectonic plates causing an earthquake?

Very interesting theory johnq; japan and India being in the top 3 economies in the region, it would benefit china economically too in this financial crisis.

Well they are certainly capable of it. In 2000, there was a flash flood in Arunachal, which many suspected was caused intentionally by Chinese military as a test (Tibet is upstream of most rivers in Arunachal, so opening an artificial or natural dam could've caused it).
