It is not a slap, they said they will tell their response, when the invitation was sent. Once the new bjp govt gets formed after elections in 2019. I guess he will visit India.

We have a neighbor in our north west who gets slapped every time. Read about it to know what exactly is a slap.

Calling Trump for the Republic Day was always fraught with danger and I’m not very unhappy that he isn’t coming, apart from the avoidable appearance of a snub. Who knows what Trump might have said? He might have said “all of this is Russian junk, you should buy American...”.....etc. We now know for certain that he doesn’t think much Of diplomatic sensibilities . Not a good choice, imo.

This is not the first or biggest snub. The US has been snubbing us in Pakistan where they supply weapons and protect their nuclear program. They have snubbed us in Afghanistan where they sponsored a trilateral arrangement between Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan. They snubbed us when they imposed sanctions on Iran, knowing very well that Indian economy will be affected.

The snub itself is not bad; It hardly has any strategic implications, but inviting an American president at such a frequency was a bad move. Once a country is represented on 26 January, we should give it a decade before they are reinvited. We should have invited Xi.

I...……………….. It is always fruitful to develop better relations with China than the US.
You must be living in Papu's dream world. The only way to improve relations with Xi and gang is to cede Arunachal Pradesh to PRC ,give up our claim to Aksai Chin ,expel Dalai Lama and other Tibetan exiles in India etc.May be then Fuehrer Xi might consider it -no gurantees.Smacks of Chamberlainesque cowardly "Peace In Our Time"
attempts to improve relations with bunch of fascist thugs! The rest is history.

Laughable.
All that we can cede is one seat of the Republic day ceremony. And you are having a seizures about ceding AP, expelling Lama and what not.
Come back to reality. If China are thugs, we are brutes. Have you forgotten how these thugs you are so morbidly afraid of, huffed and puffed and could do nothing in the Doklam issue? The only one exhibiting a cowardly mentality is you. Nothing is lost by inviting China or by trying to maintain amicable relations. They are not Pakistan.

China is going to remain bigger power than US in second of half of century. They are important than US when comes to trade.

In our pole, they can either be our challenge or our advantage. Because they are our immediate neighbours & a riled up US is better than a neighbour China in long term.

Secondly, when comes to reclaiming historical territories in subcontinent, only PRC (if friendly) could back us (remember Goa).

Its a good thing that India downplayed it. Its not a slap in the face..such things does happen in these circles. Its the USA way of saying "Well!! We will wait till the relationship matures into more ACCOUNTABLE FORM in terms of MONEY TRADED".
At the same time India kept the option open.
:D

With the Indian population in USA and growing, it wont be too long that USA becomes a natural ally cuz of the demographic advantage. Thats one reality which even USA cant ignore.

Indians are not much American Ghela.. Just because Indiia talks to America doesnt make India any less.
See, The reason why India went to USA + diversifying its equipment and engagement is based Real security threat and Logic.

Russia china relationship is far more deep. Every month we see more engagements with Russia coming out from china as FINISHED Products..which means..Russians have been with china for more than what was seen on the surface. May be even more than India mil.trade relation with USA.

Russia is a reliable partner..yes..but Russia is also in dire need of money which china gave them.
We can assume that Russia has been helping china on core technologies too.
If its with china, pak will have the knowhow of systems Russian origin.
As a good friend India does understand Russian position but at the same time is not taking the chance with china on security front.

Naturally, USA and the technology oriented nations on the brink bordering with Russia will have the technology and means to counter or trick Russian systems. Thats where India is shopping.

Its a good balancing act.

India's positioning is based on these.

For the Republic Day event, its better Trump is not coming close on the heels of the election months.
Not good considering the American ways.

I really like most of the statements made above by sorcerer except that Russia-China relationship is much deeper.
The way I see it is that Vladimir Putin is a firm believer in multi-polar world order and he certainly considers China as well as India as two of the major poles of this multi-polar world. He is against the hegemony of one superpower who can become abusive to small and weaker nations.
That is the real reason that Russia feels comfortable selling very high tech weapons such as S-400 to both China and India. This is driven by the ideology that either we will have a multi-polar, just world order or if we go to WW 3, all will perish. In spite of difficulties with Russian economy ...the commitment of Russia to create a multi-polar world order has not wavered..a world where all major powers jointly make big decisions....and not just one superpower who keeps attacking and destroying small and weak nations at its whims.
Multi-polar world order is inevitable ....because mutually assured destruction is coming back and a war between major powers is becoming less and less likely by each day.

South Africa is such a weird country to have at Republic Day, but what can one do now that Trump has refused to come.

SA's economy could be under severe pressure in the coming decades. They are experiencing some great racial tensions and a rise of Socialism/Communism there amidst these racial tensions.

There seems to be a chance that SA goes the way of Zimbabwe in the coming years.

Better than Trump. That guy would have blurted out something stupid about Russian hardware after the Republic Day celebrations.

I wish we invited Vietnam (or Mongolia to troll China).

Vietnam is a booming economy who we are working hard to establish better relations with. They are also a thorn in China's side.
