But who's to blame for this sorry state of affairs in towns like Pittsburgh? After 1970 foreign competition led to the collapse of the steel industry, with massive layoffs and mill closures. They embraced technological change more cautiously than larger firms.

Free market pressures exposed the U.S. steel industry's own internal problems, which included a now-outdated manufacturing base that had been over-expanded in the 1950s and 1960s, hostile management and labor relationships, the inflexibility of United Steelworkers regarding wage cuts and work-rule reforms, oligarchic management styles, and poor strategic planning by both unions and management.

But what of Pittsburgh today? Present-day Pittsburgh, with a diversified economy, a low cost of living, and a rich infrastructure for education and culture, has been ranked as one of the World's Most livable cities.

Tourism has recently boomed in Pittsburgh with nearly 3,000 new hotel rooms opening since 2004 and holding a consistently higher occupancy than in comparable cities. Meanwhile, Apple, Google, Uber, and Intel have joined the 1,600 technology firms choosing to operate out of Pittsburgh.

So what's all the fuss about? Why did Trump mention Pittsburgh as an excuse when it's alive and kicking?
You are right about all that, but remember what I said. The people don't care about statistics and Trump is using rhetoric. It is part of his pandering to his base.

On a related note, technology usually replaces workforce, so it is hard to maintain the same employment level percentage wise, given population is rising.

Interesting note:

You must be aware of the WP class locomotives?
View attachment 16418

Many were made in Pennsylvania, like the one below:
Even the WDM1, WDM2 and WDM3/WDG3 families are from the US, designed by the now-defunct ALCO (American Locomotive Company). India ToT'ed them (more like stole designs without paying ALCO royalties) in the 1980s and manufactured then at DLW Varanasi, inviting a boycott by American companies, all the way till the early 2000s, when they made peace. The current WDP4/WDG4 class diesel locomotives are American, too (designed by General Motors). This time DLW pays GM a 10% royalty.

Between the 1970s-2000s, till GM's G4/P4 were introduced, we were using extremely fuel-inefficient and highly polluting ALCO locomotives powered by 1960s technology. Indian Railways retrofitted some of them with turbochargers in the 1990s (WDM3A/WDG3A, WDM3D), and stunted them with catalytic converters, but that barely shot up power, and were still inefficient by standards of the day. IR is rapidly retiring ALCO locomotives and replacing them with GM P4/G4.

You are correct.

The current diesels are actually from EMD. EMD was acquired by GE.

There is one thing to note, ALCOs are known to be smokey, especially when ramping up the RPM, including the ones in the US. It is something to do with the design.

Just like how Trump withdrew from Paris accord,US forced other countries to sign Kyoto Protocol and did not sign it itself.

That thick black smoke is indicative of inefficient combustion, and has a ton of unspent fuel besides 100x the pollutants per kg exhaust compared to a BS4-compliant road vehicle. It's like that "coal-rollers" fad in America, where inbred rednecks with diesel pickups deliberately rig their engines to put out thick black smoke for the f*ck of it.

To be honest, I have seen sound enhancing exhausts, but I have never seen any gadget that gives out black smoke. You must be taking reality shows too seriously. :)

Are you into the Diesel Brothers?

There's no "coal roller" gadget. Simply yank out your catalytic converter, and take a shit on your injector heads.

 The west consumes more energy than China and India combined. They have never followed any guidelines in the past centuries when they were enriching themselves, but want India to follow all sort of rules for "protection of environment". Running away from responsibility is a chronic american illness.

You should be more worried, Europe is on a suicide mode, Trump will finish off USA and in future only two power houses will remain India and China.

PM Narendra Modi said on Friday , “Paris or no Paris, it is our conviction that we have no right to snatch from our future generation their right to have a clean and beautiful earth.“

I only see more beautiful electric cars en solar attractive market in India.

Usa retracting from climate deal, has it got any thing to do with pressure of petro usa companies as well as saudis? Sad news for tesla.

What are the restrictive contraints on fossil fuels in climate deal ? (Crude i mean not coal).

Modi in Paris.

Modi said that fighting on behalf of 'Mother Planet' is a gift for future generations, delivering on France's hope that India would confirm its commitment to the Paris Agreement.

'We are in favor of this Paris Agreement and we will continue to work in that direction, even beyond the Paris Agreement, even if this agreement did not exist,' Modi said at the close of the two leaders' talks.

Basically it states, all the countries in the world should run on clean energy by 2050-2080.

For developed countries it's 40% reduction in carbon emmissions by 2030 and to 0% carbon emissions by 2050.

India will receive billions from developed nations while internally their costs skyrocket, off course those who know how economies work are furious. Also Modi won't be able to cut those emissions like he thinks, just not possible.

well after the agreement collapses sooner than expected because the developed nations find it increasingly difficult pay up their obligations, there will be no agreement left.

oh really and what makes you think Trump will finish off the USA? with upcoming new tax code, cut in regulations in many areas and already over 600 k jobs created so far his policies though unpopular to a globally left oriented media are actually working. It's actually a good thing he focuses internally, this only makes the US stronger, wait and watch 8 years, he isn't going anywhere.

Sir ji, if we go towards clean energy then won't that end the world's dependency on Saudi / Iran oil, which means no more wahabism and all that muzzie religious bullshit. Without money they will just die out.

And I want Trump to stay in power, anyone that angers liberals is in my good books.

The media is making it look like Trump woke up one morning and told himself screw the Paris accord.

On contrary, he has a team of people who would have planned this move, made cost benefit analysis etc.

This sort of analysis that a single person as head of state would decide and implement policy matters are worth crap.
