Trump may ask India to send troops to Afghanistan

PTITrump time: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington DC on Sunday
The US President is set to hold a series of meetings with Prime Minister Modi today

NEW DELHI, JUNE 25:

India may finally face the music on Afghanistan as Prime Minister Narendra Modi sits face to face with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday.

“The US is keen to see India playing a greater role in its commitment towards counter-terrorism and as a result it may be asked to play a more meaningful role in stabilising Afghanistan by sending its men to fight the elements of terrorism there,” a top official told BusinessLine requesting anonymity.

By throwing the ‘Mother of All Bombs’ in eastern Afghanistan within just five months into the Presidency, Trump has made it clear that the ‘War on Terror’, which was started by his Republican predecessor George W. Bush as a response to the 2001 twin-tower attacks, has not yet ended.

The Trump administration recently made an announcement that it will reverse the policy of the previous Obama government of withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan. It is, in fact, considering increasing the number of troops in Afghanistan by 3,000-5,000, which the Taliban has said may destabilise the war-torn country once again.

The possibility of a troop surge in Kabul was one of main discussion points during the NATO summit, which took place in Brussels in May. According to the US, such a move will pressurise the Taliban to begin negotiations for the peace talks.

At present, NATO has over 13,000 troops in Afghanistan, including 7,000 from US that are engaged in training Afghan armed forces. During the NATO Summit, President Trump had urged all the members to step up their military presence in Afghanistan. “Trump may tell India to put the boots on the ground now in Afghanistan. With India’s usual complaints of cross-border terrorism, US may like to see India contributing more militarily. The rise of Taliban in Afghanistan in today’s world is more of a concern for India than the US,” said Nandan Unnikrishnan, Vice-President, Observer Research Foundation (ORF), a Delhi-based foreign policy think-tank.

Rising terrorism
During the ‘Heart of Asia’ Summit in December last year, India and Afghanistan had agreed that terrorism rising from Pakistan was the single biggest threat to the peace and stability in the region.

Modi had then said that “silence and inaction” will encourage the terrorists to carry out terror activities even as he vowed to do more. India has been actively engaged in training Afghan National Security Force ever since it signed the strategic partnership agreement in 2011 providing financial and technical assistance to Afghanistan.

However, the Modi government has gone a step further and supplied Kabuleight MI 25 attack helicopters. The recent terror attacks in Afghanistan have also become a major cause of concern for India.

“India is already a major political player and provider of financial and technical assistance to Kabul. But beyond the training of Afghan officers, it may now have to consider ways to increase military support,” said a report by Dhruva Jaishankar, Fellow in Foreign Policy programme at Brookings India.

Defence items and H-1B visas
The Trump administration will also make sure that the visit translates into India procuring more and more defence items from US. India, on the other hand, will raise the issue of H-1B visas and seek greater access to the American market for its goods.

I said use this opportunity to hit porkies from Afghan border too. Not to fight US or Afghan's war. They will always live in fear whether IA will hit from POK or Afghanistan.
It may put us in a position where US will be forced to supply us Arms of our choice and also fund some of it.Plus Indian goods may reach Afghanistan using American Supply lines.

It may also turn into a IPKF scenario.

If that is true , pakistanis will have big heart attack. Iran, afgans loves us there and literally all middle east countries has good relations with us.

China will cry like baby. We can be a buffer between russians and usa for greater good of afgans and syrians in mediation.

I would say take up the task and help afgans seal there borders. If we can do this, jihadi scum in pakistan has no access to middle east. Only open route is chinese rohingyas.

Good move , if we get UN invitation to join.

I have seen this in wion too. If we can get involved in only security related issues of afganistan and its assets and borders sealing thats enough. And involve in development programmes will transform us from soft to hard power and earn good will of near neighbours.

We dont need to involve in syria and some other wars out of afganistan.

We can secure chabhar road link to Russia as well from disruptions.

If news is true as we are in doubt.

Taliban's get pissed of when some other country touches their soil, this time america will use our men to fight war for their benefits.
I'll quote a Russian general on this "Afghanistan is a black hole, it swallows everything up".

What do you guys mean by "Not our War". How does it matter how we got here? This is not about war. This is about India's Strategic wherewithal 2 decades from now.

Stabilizing Afghanistan | Providing a Counter to the Pak Deep State | Linking Astan with Iran | Providing a unique inroad into Central Asia outside of the SCO | Access to Astan's natural resources (Uranium being one of them) - ABSOLUTELY in India's long term need if not interest - if we have any super power Aspirations at all.

If we dont - once the Americans leave the Pakis will be back to fill this power vaccume and with them the Chinese will own the entire Region West of India till Iran.

As of now talibunny is pakistan puppet controlled from Pakistan. Isis is different groups under one banner controlled from dark rooms (dark room= nato en saudi affiliate ). We could contract one more dark room for us to kick some isi asses in Balochistan and really hurt them for killing Indian staff in afgan bombings.

If we can involve , we can reap them from all fronts.

If we are successful, we can even secure a base there. Never say no to opportunity.

This can be a turning point if true.
India wants a bigger role in world matters (unsc seat,NSG) now there is
an opportunity to secure the neighborhood and gain access to Central Asia.
India has to decide if the soft power image serves any purpose?
Long standing relations with other nations would not be impacted
If soldiers serving under UN flag
It would stretch paki army and resources to the breaking point
It could be a strike point against CPEC, OBOR
It would probably mean an end to us aid to Pakistan?
It could be synergistic for Chabbar port.
It would not have to be any formal realignment and it would cut China off.
I see many more positives than negatives if this is true?

See we have china threat too , we can control chinese involvement from afganistan and give bleady headache to them. If we dont take any action. We have no tool to bargain witb them.

Chinese will think 100 times to suspend manosarovour trip of Indian pilgrims.

Say fcuk to chinese and grant them free pass to hell in Balochistan. if they dont mend there ways on our eastern borders.
