This is the best finish for both Men's and Women's team in Hockey irrespective of they winning bronze are not . Women team qualified for Olympics in 2016 first time after 2 decades . So they have improved their performance vastly compared to Rio finish

Men's team got knocked out to belgium in QF in Rio 2016 and now knocked out by Belgium in SF 2020 . again a jump in performance compared to last Olympics what we need is lots of youngsters to follow up once big guys retire so that experience and youth make part of team which can perform .

In Badminton also PV did the solo lifting last time saina was there at least to share burden this time its all One women show .

Boxing as Mary kom is done now, youngsters like lovalina should carry the punching forward with her bronze performance in tokyo to Paris

We should pick up where our infrastructure can support and find talents on that

My wish is we should pour all our effort and energy to pick few games where we can focus on getting double digit medals

These 5 sports is where we can try to get medals in future

Wrestling
Boxing
Badminton
Archery
Shooting
Hockey

Track/Field : we can try in Discuss and Javelin as we have two young talents who are there in the olympic stage which can shine in next 8 years easily .

Focus is what we are lacking not Funds , We should focus were our funds are getting poured into .
We need to increase our participation in the sports where we are starting to do good.

China is winning more than 75% of medals only from 6 Sports.

Similarly we also need to send as many participants in Boxing, Wrestling, Archery, Shooting, Badminton and Track n field.
Get minimum 2 participants in each weight, distance category and mixed couple, doubles, singles combinations.

He is not Medal favourite but then Good to see first time participant to finish in Top 10. We were never this close in history in track field since Milkha singh 4th place finish in 400m in 1960 Rome and P T Usha 4th place finish in 400m in 1984 LA. It took 3 decades to even beat the record set by Milkha Ji in 400m nationally .
How many are ahead of him?

Exactly look at the Women's Badminton Final it was between two bat muncher's same in other sports also . We need more participation so that semi final and final we have sure shot representation .

Look At Cuba they don't have some high class HDI like Aus, NZ or Japan but look at their solid performances

1992 Barcelona : 31 Medals , 14 Gold ( 7 Boxing and 2 Wrestling)

1996 Atlanta : 25 Medals , 9 Gold ( 4 Boxing and 2 Wrestling)

2000 Sydney : 29 Medals, 11 Gold (4 Boxing and 1 Wrestling)

2004 Athens : 27 Medals, 9 Gold (5 Boxing and 1 Wrestling)

2008 Beijing: 30 Medals ,Silver and Bronze (8 Boxing and 3 wrestling)

They started with Boxing and slowly diversified into Judo and Athletics and start getting medals from that category too .

We should also focus our success on Wrestling , Boxing and Badminton slowly into attracting talent and support for other Athletics and Field games to improve the participation

We need to increase our participation in the sports where we are starting to do good.

Its not about how many are ahead of him in qualifying he finished 2nd in his Group but its the final which matters . Even K Kaur finished 2nd in qualifying but finished 6th in final .

Neeraj Best is 88 mts and German who is favourite to win Gold has been hitting 90 mts regularly . But if you seen today qualification German reached only 85 mts that doesn't mean he can't reach 90 mts in Final

They normally don't show their best in qualification rounds and preserve it for the Final .

If Neeraj finish in the Top 5 its best finish for him . Wins a Medal then its simply super performance by olympic debutant

How many are ahead of him?

Correction: it was Gurjant who ran into the circle and passed to Simranjeet to score 5th goal. That ensured our victory. Time to celebrate.

Considering the odds they were up against - *cough* bent umpiring *cough* -this makes it doubly impressive. Definitely an epoch and that save at the end from Sreejesh, so fucking clutch. The win at the Gabba felt huge but this is definitely even bigger considering we have gone more than 40 years without a medal in a sport we once dominated in. Hope it heralds a new beginning.

There is a common talk here in NZ. Score so many goals that they can’t win even if referee cheats. Never be at par team always jump ahead miles.

Cheating will happen every time. Best solution outside the field will be to mark these referees and make formal complaint against the lobby and keep hounding them every where.

For readers who did not watch the match. India with one goal lead at the very last minute with ball in Germany possession the clock was stopped for few seconds. Germany did two illegal contacts injuring our 2 players including our captain and one Indian player thrown off balance in their circle waiting for the ball. Referee even getting reviewed from 3rd umpire made it a bully ball when it should have been the free hit for us. When we returned the favour with one good elbow charge after second time Germany’s coward coach ran into the field to protest. The ball was then made into bully ball again because they did same when we were hit before. They almost got an opportunity made by the side line actors to score an equaliser. But there is another saying that matches are lost when we prematurely think that we have won it. Throughout this drama I could see our team remained charged unlike last match.

When other side cross the line the reaction in performance and revenge comes sharper.

This is the sweetest victory our team has ever tasted. Enjoy and relax. Remember never be a sore loser.

of course my joy at this medal is greater than any feeling of wanting to rue what could have been. When you are against a stacked deck you come to accept it eventually. We had to face that in cricket too for some time. It makes it even better in the end. Hoping the women beat GBR too.

It's look like this is global problem.
Man, USSR model looks at least attractive then in comparison to this.

At least in Russia they had also jobs so that they could fall back on.
Sometimes I think our Armed forces should be producing more and more medal winners. They have the discipline, the resources and a safety net to fall back on in case things do not work out.
