In a radical step to curb alarming air pollution, the Delhi Government on Friday restricted plying of private vehicles bearing odd and even registration numbers to alternate days from January 1 in the national capital.

The measures were announced following an emergency meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, a day after the Delhi High Court compared the city to a “gas chamber”.

Chief Secretary K K Sharma said the government decided to shut down the Badarpur Thermal power station and will move the National Green Tribunal to close the Dadri power plant which falls in Uttar Pradesh.

He said Government will carry out a massive plantation drive along all arterial roads across the city to curb spread of dust and ensure vacuum cleaning of roads by the Public Works Department from April 1.

The government was also mulling to allow movement of trucks only after 11 PM as they slow down overall vehicular movement which was pointed out to be a major contributing factor to pollution from vehicular emission.

The city government has also decided to make it mandatory for vehicles to have Euro VI standards for vehicular emission from 2017, two years before the Centre’s scheduled introduction of the same.

Sharma said public transport will be significantly augmented to take the load of increasing passengers due to the odd-even number restrictions.

All private vehicles even having registration numbers issued by neighbouring states will have to follow the odd-even number formula.

Emergency services and public transport will not be under the ambit of the restriction, Delhi Dialogue Commission Vice Chairperson Ashish Khetan said, while noting that the idea has been borrowed from foreign countries.

So Delhi govt will screw its residents by enforcing such laws without putting in place a good transport infrastructure.

What can you expect when a city chooses bunch of jholachaps to lead it!!

The rich will now buy two sets of cars and further increase the parking problem. The middle class will be screwed because it cannot afford two cars and have to use crowded public transport system. I wonder what will be the efficiency loss for the city.

The people of Delhi will resent this move. Not everyone can remember which day is odd day and which day is even day.

Why buy two sets of cars? Keju mama must have already set up his franchise of fake number plates which could be yours, provided you donate generously to the jharudaar's pocket relief fund.

So now we have resident jholachaps from firstpost defending AK: http://www.firstpost.com/india/odd-...-delhi-deserves-cheers-not-jeers-2534454.html

Since all of us have equal rights to this resource, we have equal responsibilities. This is precisely why the argument that people will get around this restriction by buying a new car with a different registration number smacks of selfishness and irresponsibility.

We may use the resources common to us, but we don't have the right to exploit and destroy those.

Those who harbour such intentions should be treated as enemies of the environment and also of those who own this common resource: We the people.

Instead of resorting to hand-wringing because some self-centred citizens wish to flout the proposed restrictions, the government should ensure that owning additional vehicles doesn't become rewarding, but is made an environmental offence.
Ok. Treat them as enemies and do what? Khap panchayat against them!! If govt. makes stupid policies, people would bypass it in some way.

May be if Delhi Govt. had given people 2-3 years of time before implementing this policy, it would have been good for everyone. DG could have ramped up the public transport and people would have made their choices regarding their transport choices.

A study on these policies: https://www.dot.ny.gov/programs/repository/Tech Memo on License Plate Rationing.pdf

Long-Term Benefits Unclear –
The most extensive and objective documentation
of the long-term impacts of License Pl
ate Rationing was found for the Mexico
City implementation. These studies
found that there was no sustained
improvement in air quality, no increase
in subway ridership, and worsening air
quality on weekends and other times ou
tside of the License Plate Rationing
scheme. Mode shift was primarily to taxis and small buses rather than to
subways, which counterbalanced any impr
ovements likely to be achieved by
reductions in auto travel. Demand for gasoline went up after two months of
implementation, and Mexico City became
a net importer rather than net exporter
of used vehicles from the rest of the co
untry, meaning that residents sought to
evade the restrictions by becoming mu
lti-vehicle households (with variably
coded license plates) and began to acquire
older (and less fuel efficient and more
polluting vehicles) from the countryside.

Your assesment is wrong but I agree the law is actually very illogical.
Middle class in Delhi can easily afford 2 cars. People living on rent have 2 to 3 cars and iam talking about kacchi colonies here.
People living in a 25 Sq yard houses are owner of more than one car.
So its not rich will benefit or something....
They should make better laws instead of this BS....
BTW I have left smoking because of the pollution :)
I guess somebody have to start from somewhere.

So chu****pa continues by Khujliwal and AAM ADMI SUFFERS. :dude:

In India these leaders make such decisions without even thinking ground realities.

People with 1 car would suffer the MOST.

A LOT of traffic situations happen due to commercialization of residential areas but Khujliwal chu***a would do nothing about it.He got no f*** idea of how to de-congest learning some basic ground realities of Delhi.

Some time ago they banned porn and backtracked and creating so much confusion.

3. frequency of public transport to be increased by 50%

Not just Delhi, India needs a good public transportation system. This is what works against the prevention of excess cars on roads. I have seen this in Singapore practically. Also, buying a car is a very expensive affair in Singapore.

I would personally prefer a good public transport which gets me to my destination anyday rather than driving all the way in this Mumbai traffic.

Security should also be provided in public transport.
At present a girl cannot travel in bus without being groped or molested by those pervs.

Well a friend suggested a draconian idea.
He said those who don't have facility to park their car inside their home should not be allowed to buy a car.

This law is the outcome of atypical commie thinking. They actually borrowed this idea from a communist country called china.
If someone's a heart patient and he's getting a stroke on even day and he is only allowed to take his car out on odd days. What should his family do??
a) They should wait for the sh8tty amubulance.
b)They should let him die because it's the even day.
c)They should take out his car and break the law.
d)They should repent(shouldn't have voted for kejriMoron).
e) Ask the neighbour who have even day car..
