Three killed in clashes over mosque desecration in Mysore
2 Jul 2009, 1655 hrs IST, IANS

MYSORE: Three people were killed on Thursday in clashes over the desecration of a mosque in this Karnataka city.

The three - Zubaiullah (15), Yasir (35) and Tirupati (40) - died of stab wounds following the clash in the Udayagiri suburb of Mysore, about 140 km from the state capital Bangalore.

Tensions erupted over the desecration of the Alima mosque in Kyathamaranahalli locality when worshippers found the carcass of a swine, according to police.

"The situation is tense but under control," Udayagiri sub-inspector M. Srikanth said.

"To avert further clashes and maintain peace, we have banned the assembling of people under Section 144 of the CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) in the area covering Udayagiri, Mandi and Narasimha Raja civic limits," Srikanth said.

Police fired teargas shells and caned the mob that gathered at the mosque as word spread about the incident.

"We have registered a case of unlawful act in a place of worship and hope to book the culprits soon," the inspector said.

Of the three stabbing victims, Zubaillah succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

NDTV Correspondent, Thursday July 2, 2009, Mysore

Three people including a 14-year-old teenager were killed after clashes between two communities broke out in Mysore early on Thursday morning.

While the teenager died in police firing, two people were stabbed to death in the clashes. One of them is a 46-year-old man and the other is in his twenties.

The clashes broke out between people from two communities near a mosque under construction in Mysore's Udayagiri locality.

The police resorted to lathi-charges to disperse the crowd that had collected near the mosque.

Mysore tense after communal clashes over mosque desecration
3 Jul 2009, 1104 hrs IST, PTI

MYSORE: Rapid Action Force on Friday staged a flag march in violence-hit areas here as three more persons were stabbed last night in continuing communal clashes over alleged desecration of a madrasa.

Police said three armed persons on motorcycles stabbed three persons and fled. The injured have been admitted to a hospital.

Contingents of RAF staged flag march in troubled areas where prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC are in force.

The communal tension that rocked Udayagiri and adjoining areas here on Thursday left three persons including a child dead.

Trouble broke out yesterday after the alleged desecration following which members of a community attacked and killed a 47-year-old labourer who was on his way to work.

In retaliation, two persons were fatally stabbed by members of other community.

Violence continues in Mysore; two more receive stab injuries

Mysore, July 03: In a fresh bout of violence, two more persons received serious stab wounds as the communal tension which gripped parts of the city showed no signs of let up for the second consecutive day on Friday.

Giridhar, a BJP activist, and his friend Wajid were attacked with sharp weapons by two motor-borne persons at Pulikeshinagar area this evening, police said.

The two were chatting in front of their house when they were attacked, police said, adding the accused were yet to be identified. Javed, brother of Wajid, immediately rushed both to a hospital.

With this, five persons have been stabbed since last night and three others killed in violence, which erupted over the alleged desecration of a Madrasa here yesterday.

Though the police rushed reinforcements to the area to prevent violence from spreading, three men received stab injuries last night and are being treated in a hospital.

Two battalions of RAF deployed in the troubled areas staged a flag march today to instil confidence among fear-stricken residents.

The fresh attack on Giridhar and Wajid has baffled the police over the motive of the attackers.

Karnataka DGP Ajai Kumar Singh rushed to Mysore and held a meeting with top officials.

Singh said "the situation is under control" and the CRPF would be deployed if needed.

Meanwhile, a team of doctors conducted post-mortem on the body of the 15-year-old boy in the wake of conflicting reports over his death.

While members of his community insisted that he was killed in police firing, police maintained that he died due to stab wounds.

The post mortem report is yet to be made public by the authorities.

Opposition Congress Leader in the state assembly Siddaramaiah and KPCC President R V Deshpande demanded a judicial probe into the violence and charged the BJP government with having failed to maintain communal harmony.

Deshpande announced that the party would extend Rs 50,000 compensation to families of those killed.

The authorities have already clamped ban orders under Section 144 CrPC in the city till Sunday.

Muslim leaders appeal for a healing touch

R. Krishna Kumar and Shankar Bennur

Greater interaction between communities sought

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Majority of the people living in the riot-hit areas are daily-wage earners

Muslim leaders seek cancellation of licences of liquor shops in the area

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MYSORE: The outbreak of communal violence in the old areas of Mysore — the second in the last three months — has jolted the Muslim community leaders who vouch by the tradition of peaceful co-existence and amity that underlined the social fabric of Mysore for centuries.

Calling for a healing touch and introspection among different sections of society, the leaders suggested initiatives to bridge the gulf among different groups and to eradicate suspicion which is the root cause of violence. The initiative includes more people-to-people contact and greater interaction among leaders to prevent recurrence of such incidents. They also suggested forming a coordination committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner.

Speaking to The Hindu, Shabir Ahmed Khan, former chairman of the Mysore District Wakf Advisory Committee, said: “Mysore has a history of peace and religious amity but a few hands are instigating misguided youth, a majority of whom are unemployed or illiterate. Leaders of both communities should step in to arrest this trend.”

Sayid Rahmatullah, ex-member of the Wakf Board, also agreed with him, and added:“More than 90 per cent of the people living in Kyatamaranahalli, Shanti Nagar and Ghousia Nagar, irrespective of their religious affiliation, are daily-wage earners, who work in hotels, garages, as hawkers and vendors. They are the most vulnerable section of the society and are among the worst hit though they are in no way involved with the breakout of violence,” he added. For instance, the three people who died on Thursday were on their way to work and were oblivious of the unfolding events.

Abdul Khudoos, a member of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee minority cell, drew the attention of the presence of liquor shops in and around Kyatamaranahalli, Ghousia Nagar and Shanti Nagar in Udayagiri police station limits. He said youth under the influence of alcohol get swayed easily. “We have sought the cancellation of licences of these liquor shops which have become a den for anti-social elements. Unless there is a crackdown, it would be difficult to wean away the youth to more constructive work,” he added.

Bandh call evokes partial response in Mysore

Mysore, July 04: The bandh call given by a Hindu outfit to protest the attack on a BJP youth wing leader evoked a mixed response here on Saturday, even as tension continued in some areas in the wake of clashes sparked by the alleged desecration of a madrasa.

City transport services operated a few buses, while some private vehicles and autorickshaws plied on the roads.

A few persons have been arrested in connection with the clashes and stabbing incidents, police said, but did not give details.

The dawn to dusk bandh was called by the Hindu Jagran Vedika after a BJP activist, and his friend Wajid were attacked with sharp weapons by two assailants last evening.

The communal tension that rocked Udayagiri and adjoining areas here has left three persons including a child dead.

Trouble broke out on Thursday after the alleged desecration following which members of a community attacked and killed a 47-year-old labourer who was on his way to work. In retaliation, two persons were fatally stabbed by members of other community.

State Home Minister Dr VS Acharya is likely to visit the city later in the day and also the affected areas, sources said.

It works both ways, but the blame always fall on BJP.

After the attacks on Christians and pub attacks, the Karnataka CM has ordered the commissioner of police to catch the actual perpetrators of the crime for questioning.

There is no way to pinpoint who actually carried out these anti-social activities.

Mischief mongers to say the least. Cheap thrills or what i dont know. But totally uncalled for. I remember something like this had happened in Bangalore as well sometime back. I just dont understand why people want to create trouble. Loss of innocent lives for someones cheap thrills is condemnable.

Thousands of agitated people gathered outside the school as the news spread like a wild fire.

BJP says no to judicial probe into Mysore incident

Mysore, July 04: The BJP government on Saturday rejected Opposition Congress' demand for a judicial probe into the communal clash that claimed three lives, even as the bandh call given by a Hindu outfit to protest the attack on a BJP youth wing leader evoked 'near total response'.

Tension remained in some areas in the wake of the clashes that claimed three lives and left more than half a dozen injured over alleged desecration of a Madrasa here on July 2.

"There is no need for it (judicial probe)," said Home Minister V S Acharya, who faced a brief protest from Hindu Jagaran Vedike activists. The activists alleged that there was no protection for Hindus in Mysore.

"Police have not resorted to firing. All precautionary measures are being taken to maintain law and order", Acharya told reporters after visiting the injured in hospitals.

He said more than 100 persons had been arrested in connection with the clashes.

All business establishments were closed owing to the bandh call and transportation was also hit.

Barring Mysore unit BJP youth wing leader Giridhar, who was stabbed by unidentified persons yesterday and is reported to be critical, others injured in a spate of similar attacks were recovering, he said.

A huge police contingent has been deployed at the private hospital, where Giridhar has been admitted, to control the crowd gathered to enquire about his condition.

The condition of Giridhar's friend Wajid, who was attacked along with him, is said to be better, according to police.

Police have intensified patrolling in the trouble-torn areas.

Even if BJP is not be blamed for the incident by commission, but definitely through omission. There are plenty of fundo groups, christian Muslim and Hindu, who have a axe to grind against one another and BJP with its recent political success here,is the perfect hangar to hang your bitter coats on.

BJP for its own political sake needs to come down hard on all fundo groups,no matter what rainbow color they belong to.

Social, economic conditions blamed for Mysore violence

Muralidhara Khajane

Mysore violence limited to a few pockets

The city has a long history of communal harmony

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MYSORE: Mysore has witnessed communal violence after 17 years. The recent communal violence is limited only to a few pockets that come under Udayagiri police limits while other parts of the city have not been affected in any way.

Social and economical conditions, besides growth of both majority and minority fundamentalism are blamed for the communal tension, which the area is experiencing in recent days. Most of the people living in Kyatamaranahalli, Shanthi Nagar, Ghousia Nagar, Rajiv Nagar and Kalyangiri are living in abject poverty.

Leaders of both the communities admit that most of the people in the area are eking out their living by rolling beedis, incense sticks and construction work. The area lacks basic amenities such as roads and sanitation. Gambling dens and liquor shops dominate the area owing to alleged political pressure.

Mysore witnessed communal violence in 1986 when a daily published a “controversial” story in its magazine section. The city witnessed communal disturbance after the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992 December. “After a gap of 17 years, communal harmony in Mysore is at stake and both minority and majority fundamentalist forces are unleashing psychological terror among the people. For the first time, people are migrating to safe places,” says thinker Lingadevaru Halemane.

Noted political scientist Muzaffar Assadi observes that increasing poverty, feeling of insecurity and identity crisis are the reasons for the present development. The growing influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the State had increased the feeling of insecurity among one particular community and that might have resulted in identity crisis.

Mysore has a long history of communal harmony, thanks to Wadiyars who initiated process of extending social justice to backward class and minorities. Though emergence of community pockets began then, there are no historical records to explain the phenomenon. These community pockets started transforming into ghettos after the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992 because of sheer insecurity. “Competitive communalism will emerge, where there is no economic competition,” mr. Assadi analyses.

Describing the trend as a serious threat to communal harmony, he said that it was imperative for the concerned to contain it on priority to safeguard the city’s image.

Mr. Assadi suggests three models to nip the growth of communalism in the bud as, according to him, there is a danger of communalism spreading its tentacles to other areas.

“One model which was adopted in Udupi, where people from both the communities identified the culprits and handed them over to the police to take action as per law and another was Varanasi model, where people from both the communities sat together and sorted out the issue among themselves in a democratic manner, without the interference of outside elements. And the third model is; remaining silent without reacting to any kind of provocation and allowing the peace to return,” he says.
